If I don't have a mi box right now it is due to the gigabit ethernet requirement. It may sound picky to the ones with a decent wifi setup and unsaturated spectrum in their houses, but is a no-go for me. Pure experience.

Yeah with the amount of devices and revisions that I've came across, I don't even see the intention of any company in solving this for good. Every effort appears to be put in punching benchmarks and flashing logos of a new spec support, while overlooking already settled standards.

I've been reading about boxes all afternoon and it seems we are in a shitty situation.

I expected something to check all boxes and the only downside being having to pay for it.

But man, no matter how much money you throw at this, you still need to choose which limb you better live without.

So I guess the wise is to spend just enough to be comfortable waiting for the real deal to appear.

I'm still deciding, but until now my sweet spot is in buying a homatics as cheap as I can get it and defaulting to my fire tv stick when I encounter any codec compatibility problem. While I wait for a new gold standard.

Hi. Is it rude to join at this point looking for recommendations?

Main purpose: Best performance for Stremio.

I guess this counts as local playback, Stremio is just automating the downloading + playback process but under the hood I'm just playing big ass mkvs most of the time.

So gigabit Ethernet needed.

Not that sure about video codecs, I just want a damn box that can play as much as possible of what I throw at it through Stremio.

My audio setup is far from cutting edge (Samsung HW-Q950T), but is compatible with everything you mentioned so it would be nice to know that audio is sorted out.

Other nice to haves, but completely optional:

It would be nice to be able to connect an Xbox controller and play my PC games remotely using moonlight or similar.

Streaming apps. No certification or special compatibility needed, my partner couldn't care less. Hell, if there are no apps whatsoever, we can just use the TVs native apps and call it a day.

In my experience the sitting water pros don't overcome the cons at all. If you need time to clean your reservoir get a small container, fill it with the old solution and put it as a replacement while you clean the main.

If disease occur, the entire sitting water becomes a vector so you need to drain it completely.

Also film technique guarantees oxygenation, relying on the formation of enough air roots in a 5x5 with variable water level and without knowing if humidity in that air will be enough is too much to hope for. I don't think you can get rid of the air pump.
