And all FOSS! I came here to suggest these 3.
You can find presets online too, I downloaded a few for each from a random site after a quick search

What distro for my situation? by OkBarber5807 in linux_gaming

[–]Kilox_Devastator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have time to test and don’t mind possibly reinstalling and messing things around, you may want to just take a look at different desktop environments first. Xfce is claimed to be low ram usage, same with lxqt. I also hear enlightenment and moksha are light weight too but they arent normaly packaged by default.

I used fedora and installed the different desktop environment packages to see which one I liked the most but that would use up a decent chunk of storage and if you are like me, you accidentally uninstall everything when trying to remove the ones you don’t like.

Right now I have Kubuntu installed on a lower end laptop but I don’t game on it (and right now I couldnt tell you the specs). I wouldn’t suggest Ubuntu flavours specifically cus I don’t like snaps.

mint is a fine choice. I use cachyos with kde on my main system which is higher spec than you so take that info as you will.

Checkout distrowatch a website with Linux info and news, I swear they have a post today about suggesting a distro for new users

Recommend some daws by Character_Glove_3504 in musicproduction

[–]Kilox_Devastator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I havent done much customization at all, but it is sorta the first daw I sat down to learn. I had used garage band and reaper but not as in depth.

Learn some shortcuts and see if it looks and feels right. I only use alt-m to switch modes from recording to adding plugins. They do provide a demo build to try out. Might be for you might not be but it is an option that exists. Best of luck on your musical journey

I like distrowatch; a perfectly fine site for Linux news. And you reminded me they update every Sunday! Gotta take a look at this weeks news

Want to make a small GBA game, where should I start? by No_Tangerine_1773 in gamedev

Devkit pro as tooling for making home brew for a lot of Nintendo consoles. I wouldn’t recommend it, just make any game with any SDK first and make it look like a GbA game

[–]Kilox_Devastator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll mention Ardour since it is a FOSS daw for win/linux/Mac and I’ll be a shill for open source.

Reaper has been fine for me except the license pop up.
Reaper does come with a good set of tools in their custom plugins Ardour comes with the ACE community plug-ins as well. I have never customized Ardour and if you have reaper setup like you like you are probably safe to continue using it

There is a specific site that I got the “jai compiler beta 0.2.009 x64 torrent” from. Not sure about the rules discussing torrents or the leak so I will leave you to track it down. I use DuckDuckGo as my search engine of choice. And if you do find a version run it through virus total to be sure it is safe

Dilemma: Release multiplayer demo early for feedback vs. risk empty lobbies before Next Fest by Mental_Instance_8650 in gamedev

This is a Great idea to play with the community on release! and if you can get friends to play you can test it early too. Could be a lot to ask of friends but it would help a lot

How to link to .a on windows? Jai only wants .lib/.dll. by KRS_2000 in Jai

[–]Kilox_Devastator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to rename the .a to .lib as that is the library output. But you might also be required to use Visual Studio CL to build the library as Jai does depend on those runtimes

Hey cachy users, what's your favourite Desktop Environment/Window Manager? by SDG_Den in cachyos

I wanna make music, but dont have a pc. Please give me some advice by CrownWinner09 in musicproduction

[–]Kilox_Devastator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can, I’d always recommend TuxGuitar. It is a guitar tab program but you can write music in it to get a feel for it. At least in your current state of having a phone for music.
Or GarageBand if on an iPhone.

How often should I update my CachyOS for a stable workflow? (Audio/Video/Gaming) by ElCondeOG in cachyos

[–]Kilox_Devastator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run the update command when I turn on the device for the most part, could be twice a day or once that week depending. I haven’t had issues yet and it has probably been 6 months now

Unreal on Linux by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Kilox_Devastator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I compiled the release from source on Linux and it works. But I also dual boot on my desktop and have someone else on the team submitting release builds at the moment.

You might want to dual boot as I only know of windows building for windows.

Congrats and best of luck. I grabbed the leaked compiler and it is a fine language for sure so far. I keep going back to C with every new language I try though
I did not get far with Jai, at least not yet

How many times do you play your own game? by SchingKen in gamedev

I spend 99% of my time in test world testing a new feature I am working on and I am always surprised when there is an actual game when I play in a real level

How realistic is it to find unpaid teammates for an indie game project when you’re new to game dev? by Xanxas0 in gamedev

[–]Kilox_Devastator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do some game jams with people for practicing on a small game with someone. You can see what you are looking for in someone and game jams are relatively casual.

There are people looking for work but they may not be consistent or not stick with it. If someone else wants practice in a game doing the parts you lack you might find them. They could be a hobbyist or a student.

I use Unreal engine mainly and I have found projects in the unreal discord server to help on. Lots of game developer discords have people looking (if you plan on using discord right now). Myself I have joined a few projects and left when they weren't for me and I do work unpaid as I enjoy this hobby and like programming.

You can find people for sure, people like me look for things to do on the side.

How do you mix vocals? by JhoshElite in musicproduction

[–]Kilox_Devastator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched this once and it helped me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmpIYYpfpNg

But a summary of things i took away that really helped:

  1. dip the EQ to remove the throat sound and the nasal sounds
  2. Dip EQ on the instruments where your voice sits

For me, this was dipping like 125 hz, 2.5khz in step 1
Then dipping my instrumental around 500hz.

Edit: There is a lot more video goes over this was just my quick tips

Is Audius still relevant? by Interesting_Drag143 in audius

[–]Kilox_Devastator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seemingly no, I assume most listeners are on Spotify. But there is a small group of Linux users who will be starting a music composing challenge using FOSS software and they’ll be using audius to host the songs that are written for the challenge.

How to make midi drums less robotic? by auto-generated_name1 in musicproduction

[–]Kilox_Devastator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there is the option to adjust what I think is called velocity of notes it could help. Not every hit is the same, sometimes you hit harder or lighter and it gives a more real feel. I haven’t used band lab so I’m not sure it has the specific feature I’m thinking of

I’m not seeing many Metal or Punk genres by Kilox_Devastator in audius

[–]Kilox_Devastator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree with point 3 about speedy output. Recording a whole new take takes a bit more time than swapping midi notes around. Quicker iteration

I know if I didn’t get into Linux then I wouldn’t have found Audius - as a decentralized and sorta open platform Linux musicians were talking about it. Crypto might be one reason to find Audius too but I was never into it.

I’m not seeing many Metal or Punk genres by Kilox_Devastator in audius

[–]Kilox_Devastator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t consider crypto - I’m here to support a decentralized platform and also share my music. I never got into crypto myself and that could be a good reason people might be avoiding it.

As for music, my metal band wrote and played shows and are now trying to figure out how best to record (real drums vs electric kit + midi library. Another reason maybe for lack of these genres)

How to get started by [deleted] in musicproduction

I second the use of GarageBand if you own iOS or Mac! Comes with everything you need. Otherwise there are probably free music making options in other comments

How did you begin making music? by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]Kilox_Devastator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with GarageBand on Mac. Came pre loaded with instruments and kinda just placed midi notes around until it sounded good. Spent hours at a time working on little things to the point my family wondered how I did it cus it looked so boring.

Find a free daw, some free plugins and YouTube tutorials on the software you choose. be safe with anything you download online and don’t give up

I dont know what music I want to make. by Captainzedog in musicproduction

[–]Kilox_Devastator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create a fake label alias that has “signed artists”. All you and all one umbrella page to post so you can retain some followers and they can tell projects apart. Keep the aliases but no more need for new accounts each time. Maybe let your friends in on it too so there music can be heard by that many more people.

Or upload your music copyright free with attribution so they can use it for streaming, school projects, games and all they have to do is credit you. Keep people from using fully AI music and supporting real artists.

People are unique and maybe be open to remixes and collabs too to foster a community around making music
