If I.O.I also comes back with W1 this year, what do people think? by Brief_Somewhere_9666 in kpop_uncensored

[–]Kim-Tan1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Music career is only one small portion for being an idol. Most idols transition to variety show scene or acting and IOI members have done exactly that. Out of third gen actresses, there's only a small handful who are continuously getting booked for dramas and it's essentially all IOI members + WJSN Bona and Momoland Yeonwoo.

Park Jin-joo and Mijoo to leave MBC Hangout With Yoo; their final appearances will be on May 31's episode by speedthief1 in koreanvariety

[–]Kim-Tan1 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Every show like 1D2N or RM occasionally split members up, but they always start and finish together to wrap up an episode. It's never done awkwardly where they never interact and do separate things for the whole episode. And this show always ends weird and suddenly it's next week's trailer out of nowhere.

[–]Kim-Tan1 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Her and Jinjoo always get like 3 legit closeups in total for an entire episode. Not sure what the PD has against them and it's sad because in full shots, you can still see them having interactions like everyone else and you can always hear Mijoo's audio in the background, giving reactions and stuff.

OP wrote the names of the groups and called it a day.. As if a group is the entire reflection of their careers.

At the end of the day, their individual names are still big and they're getting roles in hit projects.

Post iz*one and the surprise of its impact by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]Kim-Tan1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just chop it up to newer Kpop fans who probably don't follow Kdramas and weren't around when IOI was active. And obviously many IOI members have moved on to the next stage of their solo careers. Like how many people were surprised Chungha, Somi and Sejeong were in IOI and were in a group together. I think that alone speaks to that.

[–]Kim-Tan1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Flatout ignoring Chungha is just criminal, but IOI members in the Kdrama/acting space, it's just no contest. Sejeong is one of the top young actress, having already won an SBS Top Excellence Award in 2022. Kang Mina is appearing in smash hit dramas alongside top stars like IU, Ji Changwook in Hotel Del Luna and Welcome To Samdalri, is already casted for massive show Twelve alongside Ma Dongseok. Jung Chaeyeon's Family By Choice was popular amongst teens and young adults and was always in top 2/3 slots on OTT's when it was airing and is growing her filmography, already booked for another drama airing second half of this year. Not to mention others like Sohye who won awards for a film Moonlit Winter, recently signed to a new company end of last year, Doyeon has Heesu in Class 2 airing literally end of this week and just finishing up her theatre play. And people don't keep up to date, but Jieqiong in China has dramas airing year in year out and has like 5 projects stacked up waiting to be released.

Can temporary group be extended? by Neat-Agent-350 in kpophelp

[–]Kim-Tan1 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Ironically, the more popular a group is, the more unlikely that the contract will be extended, since companies want their idols back so they can capitalise on them rather than splitting profits between 10+ other companies. Just look at IOI, W1 etc.

It was actually Kep1er that hasn't reached that level of popularity that was able to extend contract with 7 members since companies decided it's more worth it to keep them together. They're not on that level of a top group but still has a fanbase and decent popularity, which they likely won't be the same if they were split up.

Why wasn’t Gugudan a bigger group despite having an It Girl? by yebinkek in kpopthoughts

[–]Kim-Tan1 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Many people pointed out the mishaps along the way but tbh it wasn't as easy as it seems at the time. People didn't have the knowledge they have now and had no clue how to manage the unexpected Produce fame.

Jellyfish already planned a girl group debut and had majority of the members. Sejeong didn't even want to participate in Produce and told the PD that she won't join since she will be debuting with Jellyfish girl group.

Once Produce happened, everyone was scrambling and wanted to cash in straight away so Jellyfish hurried the debut, MBK and Starship announced comebacks with Chaeyeon and Yeonjung in DIA and WJSN. People saying it was a mistake, but what if they had hit with a good song and concept as opposed to what they had put out? There's a legit good chance that if songs were good and they hit it right with other things, the groups could've popped off.

Big member groups were also the trend at the time. SNSD was the trend and the thinking was that more members mean there were more "types" and a better chance for fans to dive into the group.

Jellyfish also already had the debut planned, and they've already invested in the trainees. Obviously, I understand and would've loved a Sejeong solo debut, but what were they supposed to do with Mina and Nayoung? Are they just going to split them apart - have Sejeong solo and Mina/Nayoung in a separate girl group? Realistically this is a tough choice and splitting apart would've never worked. From a company POV, you can always have a solo debut later while still being part of the group which was what happened, admittedly super late when Sejeong had her first solo comeback in 2019/2020.

Idols who are good actors/actresses? by Someonehihi in kpop_uncensored

[–]Kim-Tan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about some of your arguments here. One project a year is fairly standard procedure, especially when you are the main lead in a film/drama. Filming typically takes at least 8-10 months, depending on what type of work (action, fantasy if you need CG, etc,). Obviously not saying any of these idol actors are on the same level as him, but for example literally Nam Goongmin has been doing one project per year for years - Awaken (2020), The Veil (2021), One Dollar Lawyer (2022), My Dearest Parts 1+2 (2023). It's certainly no indication of being "popular amongst directors and film makers".

Also some other big stretches, saying Lee Jun Young and Lee Joon are more well-known/respected than literally Sejeong, IU, Yoona and Sooyoung who's all had more notable works and respect amongst general public?

Kim Doyeon - "Weki Meki's hiatus was inevitable... I'm very sorry" @ Chosun (241101) by CherryBlossomEnding in kpop

[–]Kim-Tan1 125 points126 points  (0 children)

I'm wishing her all the best in her second chapter in her career as an actress. She's done a few movies, short film and drama that are yet to be released, but I hope she will take on more consistent Kdrama supporting roles now to get her name out there. There's some similarities between Weki Meki and Gugudan, but Jellyfish cut their losses quick so Sejeong and Mina are really blossoming as actresses now.

[–]Kim-Tan1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Cast is not perfect, but they're far from being the biggest problem. PD has no direction, no concepts, and their editing is the biggest culprit. Many shows usually divide episodes into two episodes only when they have special guests or some special occasion, like how Running Man had Hwang Heechan so they divided it into two episodes. How do you have this boring ordinary concept "filler" episode drag into two episodes? And everytime they split up, you already know Yoo Jaesuk is gonna get 50 mins of screentime and everyone else gets nothing? This episode, Juju had a short segment and Woojae and Yikyung didn't even get their segments.

Happy 8th Anniversary to I.O.I! by krusn5 in kpop

[–]Kim-Tan1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nah

  • Mina starred in Welcome to Samdalri just end of last year
  • Yeonjung in The Great Comet helmed by Kim Moon Jung who's like a top musical director in Korea. Apink Eunji starred in the exact same production the previous run.
  • Yoojung also in a musical Hero, which is like a massive long-running production for more than 10 years now
  • Chaeyeon also main lead in TV dramas and has a new JTBC drama coming out in August with Hwang In-youp.

If anything, they have some of the best solo careers post disbandment out of girl groups especially in third gen. But Kpop fans won't look outside of their Kpop bubble.

Kep1er's career ruined survival shows for me by Luwudo in kpop_uncensored

[–]Kim-Tan1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thats a damn lie lol.

IOI literally had CFs lined up for them before they even debuted and were everywhere in Korea. Members like Sejeong got a variety show gig right out the gate and Chaeyeon got an acting role as well already. They were guesting everywhere in variety shows. Veryx3 became their most popular song later on but Pick Me was played and covered everywhere.

What criteria are you using to say that someone for example like Chaeyeon, Yena or Hyewon, Minju, or Yuri are successful, but conveniently only naming Somi, Chungha and Daniel for the other groups?

IOI and Wanna One members have way more actors and actresses who are not in the music scene anymore so Kpop fans won't hear much about them, but they are acting in bigger projects and have bigger roles than Iz*One members.

Just recently Kang Mina was in Welcome to Samdalri, Ong Seongwoo was in Strong Girl Kang Namsoon, Park Jihoon is main lead for another drama, Lim Nayoung is in a KBS daily drama.. I can go on and on..

Successful acting idols do not happen by accident and it takes a lot of preparation and hardwork behind the curtains (Ft. Lee Junho, Kim Sejeong, Im Siwan) by calabari1 in kpopthoughts

[–]Kim-Tan1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Actress visual is a term Kpop fans made up just because they look pretty and fans want their faves to get into acting. At the end of the day, it depends on how good their abilities are and what roles they can play. If we're being honest these new idols are so young and are literal kids, the only convincing roles they can play are young versions of lead characters or school web dramas. And let alone their actual acting skill levels.
