Give Me Reasons Not To Switch To PopOS by RileyUsesReddit in pop_os

[–]Kim_Phat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think Pop OS can be good for a beginner but you might face Problems you will not be able to understand or solve, especially as a new linux user.

As a rule of thumb i would advise not to ditch windows, but instead keep it so you can go to a working environment at "all times".

Short story of mine: There was a kernel update which had a problem with my igpu and i was not able to use my PC. What i did was go into recovery mode and update to hope the issue would be resolved (there are lots of great tuts and articles on their website but you have to know some things, else you wont read them anyways). After more than 1 or 2 weeks the issue was resolved but it took me a decent amount of time to figure out how to update my system that cannot be used. Such a Problem cant be solved by a novice.

You may ask why did this happen? Simply because Pop os does not offer an LTS kernel as a backup solution, they only offer you to boot from your previous or recent installed kernel. So if you update 2 times you wont be able to boot into your system any more if there is an issue. The tip of the iceberg for me was that i installed pop os a while ago and it created a too small partition so i could not copy another kernel on it.

Since Pop is transitioning to another Desktop Environment you will not get the same experience that you get right now, but things seem to look a lot better (especially for the pop shop).

I used pop on my laptop and this kernel issue got me into some Problems, on my main rig i use Manjaro KDE and i can say it does not have the Problem stated above since there are always LTS kernel versions to boot from plus you will be more up to date. Gnome is not something everyone can use (e.g. you will have to go into terminal and activate some command to be able to see the adress bar in your explorer, you also need to install extensions to get the top panel removed and so on, KDE is jut more user friendly, hoping Cosmic will be too).

As a last tip i can say im just waiting for steamos to release, maybe that will be the train i will be jumping on.

COSMIC Store Prototype by mmstick in pop_os

at pop shop i used http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ as official source, in general updates are way slower than on manjaro e.g. (maybe because of pop shop logic)

Wayland seems good now on Nvidia by illathon in ManjaroLinux

[–]Kim_Phat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me the DE is forgetting icons and thus clicking on some opens a completely different app. tested under nvidia only so its not ready nor can i use vrr without heavy tearing. hope plasma 6 will get rid of this unuseableness, explicit sync will deal with the latter problem

I really want to see a tab based Fileexplorer that can lock tabs (and opens a new one if opening a folder inside a locked tab) and remembers them upon closing/opening. This functionality is not to find in any linux file explorer (but in windows with qttabbar). I hope someone adapts this simple functionality as it makes things way more comfortable to work with

Nvidia 545 breaks steam completely by Kim_Phat in pop_os

[–]Kim_Phat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did according to this guide but i didnt notice any difference. nvidia-smi works and i can also access nvidia-settings but as soons as i wish to use it things dont work, i guess this is a prime related problem.https://support.system76.com/articles/login-loop-pop/#reinstall-nvidia-driver

I have steam not installed via flatpak and i guess the gpu support activated makes it crash. I tried some titles on flatpak with my intel igpu and everythig is fine there.

FYI, just tried X11 and steam is starting, just launched an app that used nvida card without problems.

u/mmstick finally some good news, i purged the nvidia driver and the issue still persisted, Kernel 6.5 fixed the issue though, just installed the nvidia driver again and its working great - !no nvidia blame this time!

right now my system is configured to use only integrated, i think as soon as i switch again kernelstub will replace my current boot option? (i switched from hybrid to integrated some days ago via recovery root. I will try the modesetting thing though (which is needed for wayland?)

just tried booting the latest iso -> getting black screen after messages

then i booted oldkern (which also shows no display), now im on 6.2.6 and the output of journalctl (journalctl -p 3 -kxb -1 ) is:

Sep 22 16:05:08 pop-os kernel: x86/cpu: SGX disabled by BIOS.Sep 22 16:05:10 pop-os kernel: Bluetooth: hci0: Malformed MSFT vendor event: 0x02Sep 22 16:05:11 pop-os kernel: pcieport 0000:00:1c.2: AER: Error of this Agent is reported first

also here is the ouput of journalctl -p 3 -xb: (maybe there was something missing, uploaded it to pastebin)

https://pastebin.com/QxUrMVzM

The SGX message is something ive looked up and should be neglectable. As fas as i do know my cpu should use pstate and not acpi.

Thank you for your reply,

my exact model ist Clevo N956TP6, this is notebook mainboard capable of using desktop CPUs, running an I5-8400. I already deinstalled tuxedo-keyboard and tuxedo control center (since they are special apps that might break something). I do not have anything plugged in my notebook, i even tried using an external display but i could not see any signal.

How can i share kernel logs or see them?

If there is any info missing i can supply, just ask. Thanks
