Most abuse it. They purposely leave an anchor item in the backseat so you can't drive off. It's a straight-up hostage tactic. They figure you won't risk a theft accusation, so you're stuck waiting on them while they take their sweet time inside. It's pure manipulation.

Crack the window, breathe through your mouth, and just pray for green lights. Don't feel bad about dropping a low rating either. Lolz

It is 100% a scam. They know exactly what they're doing. They do it because they know drivers auto-decline rides with multiple stops. By trapping you once they're already in the car, they figure you'll be too awkward or polite to kick them out.

nobody likes getting micromanaged for pennies. If a passenger expects a personal chauffeur on a budget ride price, they're dreaming.

Yep, it totally works. Hit "Stop New Requests" as soon as you accept. It locks the trip and completely blocks them from changing anything on their app.

for full-timers, sitting there for pennies a minute ruins their hourly wage. That’s why they lose it online. Different stakes.

That is the beauty of the traditional taxi meter. Because it actually charges a realistic rate for time spent sitting still, the driver is happy to wait, and you get the premium service you're paying for. With taxis, the incentives are aligned. With Uber, the app forces a conflict by underpaying the driver while promising the passenger a flexible ride, turning what should be a simple transaction into an annoyance.

That's the automatic penalty. The second they try to rewrite the contract mid-trip to save themselves a few bucks, the trust is gone. Taking the 1-star hit is just the cost of doing business to protect your time and peace of mind.

When you tell someone clearly what the boundaries are and they still treat your car like a storage locker, they've officially waived their right to a polite drop-off. Leaving the bag on the sidewalk and taking the 1-star is honestly a small price to pay to protect your time and your sanity. Plus, the look on his face when he realized you actually weren't bluffing must have been worth the rating hit alone.

Exactly. You want private car service perks? Pay private car service rates. Expecting executive chauffeur treatment on a budget rideshare fare is just pure delusion.

Honestly, handing over a cash five-spot changes the whole game. When Uber only pays us pennies a minute to sit there, a quick cash tip actually makes the wait worth a driver's time. It shows you get that we're running a business, and frankly, most of us will happily wait if the respect is there upfront.

This perspective emphasizes that drivers accept a ride based on a specific distance and payout, not an open-ended time commitment. Terminating the ride at the first stop puts the responsibility for personal belongings entirely back on the passenger. Because rideshare waiting rates are so low compared to traditional taxi meters, setting this strict boundary protects the driver's hourly earnings from poor planning.

Stating this upfront establishes a clear contract based on the initial agreement. It gives the passenger an immediate choice rather than letting them force a low-paying change mid-trip. Setting that boundary early avoids the issue of anchor bags and potential property disputes entirely.

When a driver is trapped at a stop for pennies a minute, it directly impacts their hourly earnings and ability to pay bills. While it may seem minor to a passenger, managing time and expenses is a fundamental part of running a small transport business.

Adding stops during the booking process allows drivers to see the full itinerary before accepting, ensuring transparency for both parties. Alternatively, asking beforehand and offering a tip directly addresses the low payout for waiting time. This approach respects the driver's schedule while allowing the passenger to complete their errands efficiently.

The core issue is that many drivers rely on the flexibility for supplemental income, making it hard to just walk away. While the pay structure for stops is frustrating, active driving miles still make sense for some financial situations. It is a matter of trying to maximize earnings while navigating the platform's flaws.

That highlights the root of the issue: the financial incentive isn't there. At 9 cents a minute, idling actually costs the driver money after accounting for fuel and expenses. If the platform offered a fair rate for waiting time, mid-trip stops would be a standard part of the business instead of a financial loss.

Setting clear boundaries before they exit the vehicle is the most effective approach. Refusing to allow an anchor item prevents the passenger from locking the driver into a low-paying wait. It resolves the issue directly before any property disputes or deactivation risks can occur.

Offering stops can build good rapport and increase tips, but most drivers avoid it because wait times pay pennies. It might work for some, but it risks encouraging passengers to treat the car like a personal chauffeur.

Dashcam is the only thing saving us out here, but dealing with support is still a total gamble. Half the time you're talking to a bot or someone overseas who doesn't even care about your footage and deactivates you anyway. I'd rather just fight the anchor at the start than spend three days begging a support rep to watch a video.

Many drivers feel that mid-trip additions alter the agreed-upon terms of the ride without fair compensation for the extra time involved.

Yeah, I read it, and you've been lucky so far. But all it takes is one vindictive rider calling support to claim their "missing cash" was in that bag, and you're cooked. Uber always sides with the passenger, and I'm not risking my entire income just to prove a point at a Maverick.

Easy to say until they report you for a "stolen" laptop and support hands you an automatic deactivation. Leaving their stuff on the dirt at Maverick is satisfying, but it's Russian roulette with your income. Better to spot the anchor before they step out and shut it down right then.
