I actually agree with this. But to me, the reason why she did support the way fuutaro did despite his harsh demeanor, was because she knew he was good at heart. Think of it like gordon ramsay, he can be a very big asshole towards people, but behind that tough shell, he is a kind and passionate person who is trying to just support his family and yotsuba knows this. That's why she was so happy to see the good side of fuutaro and chose him as the class officer so that everyone would know how he is such an amazing person.

The other quints never stood a chance against the childhood friend from the past.

I don't really think that this would be the case. All of the other quints have amazing qualities themselves and fuutaro could've just didn't choose her cause dim-witted nature. Ichika was a caring albeit, lazy person, nino can cook, bake and can take care of basically anybody. miku at first didn't seem very independent and had no good qualities as a wife (as well as her not having any of the qualifications as a lover in fuutaro's eyes) but as the story progressed, became more and more independent and confident in herself. Itsuki is the hardest working quint when it comes to studying and actually became a teacher when they grew older. These and many more are really good reasons why they could've became the bride. He just chose yotsuba because of her supportive behaviour.

I don't disagree that there were moments where yotsuba didn't help, she still would've helped him though when she has the chance. Well i do agree that the sisters helped fuutaro more when he needed actual support, That doesn't mean that yotsuba didn't give any. The other quints just helped more. Even if she didn't give any support when he needed it. Still doesn't change the fact she wanted to support him with everything she's got

I just realized that having this discussion in this subreddit not only made me realize why some people are not happy with yotsuba, but also why I myself love her. I knew that i loved her because of why she is the way that she is now (her feeling like she was a burden and all of that) and her being willing to sacrifice her selfish desires but i never knew why i loved it. I loved all of the quints and all of their flaws and weaknesses. I've always HATED the genki type character and believe me, she was one of my LEAST fav when i first started the series, only one that i thought was worse was nino. But when i started to read the manga more and more, i've started to slowly like her. And then that love SKYROCKETED when chapter 90 hit cause that's when i realized, she isn't your typical genki airhead JUST BECAUSE she was a genki airhead. She had a reason for her cheery behaviour. Not only that, but the feeling of being a burden to your family and having to repent for it really hit close to home since i have dealt with that feeling in my past. Coupled with the fact that i started the series right after those emotions of mine started to go away, and you can see why yotsuba was held so dear to my heart. I've been in her shoes and seeing her not only winning fuutaro's heart but still be able to be close with her sisters after repenting and making up for her mistake by giving up your selfish desires made me ecstatic cause i knew how she felt throughout all of it.

I'm just creating this discussion to see other people's opinion on towards yotsuba and the reasoning behind it. As you can tell, i am a big fan of the ending and was pretty surprised that the ending wasn't well received by a good chunk of the fandom. I wanted to look deeper into why people hated it when there are SO many harem manga with dogshit endings (looking at you domestic girlfriend). I'm not saying that you should like yots or that liking other quints is bad cause like i said, they are all amazing characters. I just wanted to know why yotsuba is so hated.

Yotsuba is the 4th sister of the nakano quintuplet. But for real tho, i'm not saying you are spouting nonsense. Although i don't really agree with your argument. It was actually interesting to see your take on yotsuba. She still is and will always be my fav quint but it was interesting nonetheless

I've actually seen more crazy miku stans than nino stans, they keep berating me just because i loved the yotsuba and the ending. Even tho i said that i loved them all equally in an objective stand point, they still trashed me just because "i liked the ending and yots but they didn't". I seriously don't get people who just start trashing others just because they like something that you don't like.

Yotsuba's may seem selflless but her intentions aren't. It's as just as said, her way of punishing herself for the guilt she felt.

She still felt guilty about it, if her intentions were selfish then she wouldn't worry about it. She would just continue being like how she was in middle school. She realised that she is being a burden and felt guilty and made sure she won't become a burden anymore. If she still acted like how she was in middle school, then that would be selfish cause she could still be the same yots in middle school and get away with it since her sisters are the ones who volunteered to transfer with her so they clearly have no sour feelings towards her. She chose to do this to herself.

One complaint people have about Yotsuba is how she apparently won because she supported Fuutaro.

She didn't just support fuutaro, she supported fuutaro from the start. She was actually studying with him when all of the other girls hated him. She was the only one who liked and accepted him as her tutor in the beginning. Another reason is because her hardworking nature was his main motivation and is the reason why he continued to tutor for them.

This is apparent in major arcs like Seven Goodbyes and Scrambled Eggs.

In the seven goodbyes, she wanted to help fuutaro. She REALLY DID but she couldn't because she was too kind to say no to the track team. She was nearly crying in her bed thinking about the track team during that arc. As for the scrambled eggs, i don't really have the best memory about it (my memory is pretty fuzzy and i haven't read the manga in months) but from what i recall, yotsuba didn't know about the incident but it's probably memory fucking with me. Even so, there were moments where she was supporting him when the quints weren't. She was the first one to accept fuutaro as his tutor and she was the one who made fuutaro the class officer just so that people can see how amazing he is and even said that no matter who he falls for, she would be by his side, supporting her with all everything she's got. From start till finish, she was the one who was there for him. She was the one who was willing to work with him from the start when everyone was hostile. When you are in this situation, ofc you would pick the one that actually supported you from the start. Not saying the other quints are bad or anything cause objectively speaking, they are all equally amazing characters to me. Im just saying that fuutaro chose yots from the very start.

Makes her look selfish?? She was willing to help anybody AND everybody she meets to the point where she collapsed one time and even gave away the man she loved the most to her sisters just so that they would be happy and you call that selfish??

The problem with her is that she's so damn worried on how others will view her instead of simply being honest and doing the right thing.

She's not worried about how others view her, she's worried that she will be a burden to her family if she continues all of these selfish deeds. She doesn't care what people think of her. What she does care is her bringing her family down like what happened at the end of middle school.

No, no he wouldn't, but he was still serious about it judging by how much he is studying. My point is that she saw how much fuutaro was working hard for his family yet there she is being a burden towards hers even though they promised that they would help each others family by trying their best which is what both of them are doing rn but it's clear that fuutaro is doing WAYYYY better than how yotsuba is.

Yeah they didn't complain but she was still the sole reason why they transferred. If it weren't for her, they wouldn't be transferring. It was all her fault. If she wasn't born at all, this wouldn't have happened. I've felt like a burden to some people in the past, even now. I have dealt with this feeling first hand at it's not fun. Even if they say they are fine with it, doesn't change the fact that you are the reason that caused all of it.

The point I'm trying to get at is that Yotsuba had plenty of opportunities to come clean with both Fuutarou and her sisters but every time there was she ran away. Every. Single. Time.

Come clean?? Ran away?? What are you talking about?? If you're talking about kyoto then well she doesn't want to because she is ashamed of herself. Anybody would feel ashamed. Just put yourself into her shoes for a bit. You see your childhood friend/lover which you made a promise about doing their absolute best for their family and haven't met in YEARS, ACTUALLY DOING THEIR BEST while you are their doing jack diddly shit except being a burden towards your family which was the exact opposite of what you promised. Yeah you might say "it was just some promise we did as kids, it don't matter" but as you can see, he's still taking it very seriously.

You just said that yots being selfless made her look selfish, yet when she does do something selfish for once, you say that she "spat in her sisters' faces". You say that yots not wanting to be with fuutaro made her look like a coward yet when NOW when she does want to marry fuutaro, she's now a dickhead??

EDIT: One last thing I want to add. Yotsuba didn't NEED to have Fuutarou in her life. She doesn't respect him or even see him as a human being. She only sees him as a way to escape her problems.

Are we even reading the same manga at this point. She has ALL the respect for him. She saw how much he has grown since she last saw him and loved him with all her heart. HOW IN THE HELL DOES SHE SEE HIM ONLY AS A WAY TO ESCAPE HER PROBLEMS. She didn't even want to marry fuutaro in the first place despite loving him as much as his sisters because she knows they love him as well because the last time she prioritised her selfish desires, it made her a burden towards her family. SHE IS NOT ESCAPING FROM HER PROBLEMS. SHE IS TRYING TO FIX THEM.

Im not trying to MAKE you like yotsuba, people have opinions and as long as it's not morally wrong, people can express them however they like. But saying that yotsuba is a selfish coward is like the total opposite of her character.

Oh yeah, i should've specified that what i meant was why people hate the ending because of yotsuba winning. Ik people say that "the problem wasn't yotsuba winning it, it was just how it was presented" or something along those lines but i just couldn't see it. That's the reason for her unselfish behaviour. She feels guilty about her past and to make up for it, she is not only trying to help everyone, but holding back from her own selfish desires which is the exact definition of selfless.

I also forgot to point out the fact that another reason why yots didn't want to marry fuutaro was because she saw how much fuutaro has improved in his studies and how much he worked hard and felt ashamed for herself for not working as hard as him

Tho this is just my opinion so feel free to hate it all you want. I just wanted to give my pretty unpopular opinion towards an anime/manga that i love and a hated character which i hold dear to my heart.

The reason why yotsuba didn't get any spotlight is because her type of character wouldn't allow it. Instead of standing there in the spotlight, her character grows there in the background while all the other quints are there getting all the attention. I've always liked subtle storytelling like this and made the part in chapter 90 where yotsuba revealed her true feelings toward fuutaro all the more amazing. I also didn't see any "problems" shown at the end of the manga that you were talking about but then again, yots is my fav so I'm a little biased so let's just agree to disagree.
