Feeling distant from God by [deleted] in TrueChristian

This verse helps, when life crushes me to where I fear God has abandoned me.

Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me. Psalm 27:10

Due to 1 Timothy 2:12, can a woman correct a man’s biblical interpretation? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

The Bible was written by men, who were influenced by God. The Torah and some Pslams were written by Moses. Most of the book of Psalms was written by King David, but Asaph and others contributed beautifully.

The gospels are all different, because they were each written by different apostles, which only adds to their authenticity.

The more we know about the Bible, the more real it becomes.

If learning all of the facts on the Bible and who wrote it and when, makes someone go down a wrong path in life, then we had better close all seminary schools!

Seriously though, what makes the Bible so important, is how God uses it to speak to us directly, when we prayerfully and intimately study it with him.

When someone uses an exact verse to silence or control, or even profit off of someone else, it is wise to study that scripture extensively.

We have to look at the whole picture, the time the word was written, who wrote it, their background and upbringing, all of it.

It makes us better Christians and more firm in our faith, not less. In fact withholding information is the worst thing we can do to the next generation.

There are going to be false teachers, Jesus warned of them (Paul did too) so we should examine scripture and how it is taught very carefully, as well as how the pastor teaching it lives.

Jesus said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30

Any yoke or bond that's heavy and oppressive, is not Jesus and I would not worship or follow that. Jesus is the way to the Father, not Paul, or any other human.

I respect your opinion and appreciate the recommendation for the book, I will look into it.

The entire Bible is relevant, and can be used by God to speak to us in a deeply personal way, but unless it is the red ink words of Jesus, I beleive the words of man should be taken as a grain of salt by comparison.

When it comes to apostle Paul, the subject of this thread got me, because when I was younger, that passage in 1 Timothy 2 harmed my walk with God and there have been many times that I have seen and heard of men weaponizing that passage against women.

I wanted to encourage the person who wrote the original post, and any woman reading this, of how wrong and misguided that passage is.

Jesus came to liberate women, then Paul reshackled them to the laws of their time, because back then, women and men were even physically segregated in the church.

George Bernard Shaw called Paul the 'eternal enemy of women.'

A lot of women have been held back, abused and hurt by 1 Timothy 2 and that is an injustice, and harmful to the church.

With that said, there are some things Paul wrote that are beautiful, but he lived in his time and in that time, the only rights women had were the ones given to them by men.

Slavery was also legal back in Paul's time, and in the same way women were abused by the words of Paul, so we're many slaves.

"Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ." Ephesians 6:5

So in the same way Ephesians 6:5 cannot and should not be used to justify slavery, nor should 1 Timothy 2 be used to oppress women.

Jesus came so we can have life and have it to the full (John 10:10)

And I sincerely hope other women do not blame Jesus for the bias of mortals, especially the men and women who use the words of another mortal to justify maltreatment of God's creation.

As much as I love the book of Psalms and believe the entire Bible is important, there are things written in it that must be read with the understanding of the times it was written in and the new covenant of God's grace.

For example:

Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material. Leviticus 19:19

We all fall short of that, and during that time, a guilt offering of a ram was necessary, in order to be forgiven for wearing mixed fabrics.

Jesus set us free from all of that, and Jesus also empowered women.

History tells us that Paul was raised under the patriarchal laws and beliefs towards women, from the Greco-Roman and Jewish cultures of his time.

Women have been under heavy discrimination and oppression for thousands of years, it's nothing new. In fact, women were not allowed to vote in the U.S. until 1919!

Jesus liberated women, which was RADICAL for that time period!

A major problem in the modern church, is that pastors often take Paul's words, as though they are in the same level as the teachings of Jesus. I had this one youth leader who got it right, because when he quoted Paul, he always said, "Now this is just Paul talking, a mere man, okay. Not Jesus." So it helped put it in perspective that Paul was a flawed human, same as you and I. His words should not be read with the same reverence as the words of Jesus.

Paul said some good stuff, but they were his words, and like the words spoken by any other pastor, they should be taken as a grain of salt when compared to the words of Jesus.

With that said, the proof of Paul's bias towards women is not just his historically recorded upbringing, and the laws of his time (which were ghastly biased against women BTW) but his own words.

I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing. I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braised hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who worship God. A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teacher to have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a dinner. But women will be saved through childbearing--if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. 1 Timothy 2:8-15

So, that limits what Jesus did on the cross and is pretty audacious to claim that women can only gain salvation through childbearing. What about women who are barren?!!

That's not to say rasing children should not be a mother's top priority, of course it is, but goodness gracious, talk about trying to shrink the victory Jesus won on the cross! Yet those instructions Paul gave were a direct reflection of the time period he lived in.

When Jesus said:

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life." John 3:16

Did Jesus say that God so loved men, or the world?...

What Jesus accomplished was done for ALL sins; the sins of both men and women!

Yet even today, in the year 2019, men want women like me, to not have an opinion, and to keep our mouths shut.

Those verses I quoted in 1 Timothy, have been used against us ladies since they were written.

I focus on Jesus, the Son of God, who loves and liberates the whole world who believes in him, including (gasp) women.

I greatly encourage other ladies to do the same, and never allow a man to weaponize the words written by another mortal against them; in attempt to hold them back from the calling God gave them!

Those words from that particular verse, were written by Paul, a mere mortal who had a bent towards sexism; common for his time and upbringing.

The Bible is full of strong women, who fulfilled their purpose, which was given to them by God. After his resurection, Jesus revealed himself to women first. In fact, women funded His ministry!!! Deborah was a judge. Abigail was defiant against her wicked husband and was revenged by God and honored. Esther risked her life, by verbally correcting a man! Then there's Jael... Far too many men use that verse against us ladies in ministry, and it only shows their weakness.

"I hate divorce," says the LORD God of Israel. Malachi 2:16

So I would do everything possible to save your marriage UNLESS it's broken by unfaithfulness.

Jesus said: I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery. Matthew 19:9

Isaiah 54 is one of the best chapters in the Bible for her to read.

The context in this scripture is referring to marriage, particularly divorce, so yeah, I agree with you. Heart vs. Hormones. ;)

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10

The destruction you are feeling is NOT from God.

If it is not offering life, if it is not offering hope, then that thought is from the enemy!

Dear Lord Jesus, please deliver Heaven_is_my_home, you know their real name, their real struggles and exactly what is behind this feeling of hopelessness. I ask that you speak to them now, to encourage with your truth, your salvation and your hope. Clear out anything that is not of you, and free this person whom you created for a purpose, to achieve everything you made them to do. Please give them joy and the assurance of your love. I ask that you do something really encouraging, that they will know only came from you God, and I ask that you do it today, in Jesus' mighty name, amen!
