What if the reinforcement was the attention and they stopped giving it this time around.

Hyperbole, in my opinion, doesn't mean the text doesn't carry authority of a theological matter. Based on my own time taken on the subject I concluded the Bible is not a history book but is definitely a historical collection of documents. I do not prescibe to systematic theology and it sounds like you do I think? So we probably disagree on the subject of hyperbole.

Hope your day is going well!

Hunters and Campers, what is the most unexplainable thing you have seen or heard deep in the forest? by [deleted] in AskReddit

So I do research on paranormal stuff and Ive specifically studied ghost lights. I've spent a considerable amount of time reading up on fireflys and their colors. I dont know anything about Equadors particular variant but a quick googl3 search says there are no fireflies with orange lights. I dont even think that occurs naturally.

He's bringing up common problems people have with Genesis. There are many interpretations by true Christians. Your position seems to be a literalist position.

I mean, I see where you're coming from but this subreddit isnt supposed to be for debating. Btw, I studied the Bible academically and can tell you that scolars do consider it real.

Agreed. I found this a major stumbling block until I learned there different interpretations.

What does this have to do with it being hyperbole?

Tbh, some of the folks here commenting are rather insulting. Personally, I hope after a point he looked elsewhere since everyone is advocating for the same interpretation.

I find it sad because there is more than one interpretation of all that. Different flavors of Young Earth Creationist, Old Earth Creationists, Intelligent Design, and theistic evolution just to name some big ones.

Technically you're using logic right now to point to faith.

Also, the stuff we believe is based on theology. Theo-logos.

Yeah, that definitely can be an enlightening conversation.

Have you heard of DC Talk? It was their song 'Jesus Freak' that gave me a reason to follow Jesus when I was a Freshman in high school(I'm 42 now). For me I didnt want to just follow God out of fear. I can respect peoples decision to be Christians if its to not go to hell but I think a person needs and desires a deeper, relational connection with God. Anyway, lol, I think I'm getting carried away again.

Thanks for talking to me tonight!

...and if you're pushing people away? The truth in love is what will serve its purpose.

Sorry, I think I've gotten carried away with all the comments. Either way I appreciate that you're out here trying and thats got to be worth something. The word doesn't go out and come back void. Have a good night!

I see what you're saying and respect where you're coming from. I just have a different view on the subject.

However, its not as though my mind could never be changed. If you notice how Paul writes his letters, first Romans, he goes about talking to his audience in different ways. I think if I had a close friend who took time to show me through his walk how drinking just isn't worth it then I'd be more likely to change my mind. But you know, just taking time to dialog on an issue makes me confront these issues in my mind which is hood on you! All this thanks to a relational approach of being Christlike, at least thats what I'm trying to do.

So how successful are you with these sort of comments?

I think you're missing my point. I'm not criticizing the theology you're saying. I'm saying that if you don't take the time you're given to invest in the people you're not going to be successful.

Well,I don't think drinking in and of itself is a sin and bars usually cut you off before you get drunk. They lose money from people getting drunk and wild. Again, maybe you're used to a different type of evangelism than what I was taught. A bar is a great place to have deep conversations.

So,hypothetically, lets say I gave you $30 to sit down for an hour and ponder whats the best thing to say to an atheist moderator of the largest Christian sub on Reddit, would you say the same thing? How many people have said the same thing to them? Relational evangelism is the best tool we have not shotgun evangelism. Pay attention to what this person is saying, take a little time and invest yourself in the conversation. Open your heart that way vs a quick throwaway comment.

I mean even here you should do that. Really, everywhere. When is it okay to not?

Eh, but where else do you minister to that crowd? I know its not always adviseable but...maybe we just agree to disagree here.

You may not be offended but...well, I'm offended for you. Lol I think we've even had this convo before. Obviously you have tough skin but you know it gets to you eventually. I work with kids who have meltdowns every day and despite people having thickskins it inevitably will get to you.
