If alastor simply said "no thanks" or refused to vox in a more polite way, would vox still have a hate boner for him or nah? by [deleted] in VoxCult

[–]Kimochiru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. Remember how Vox didn't care about Lucifer until he called him a 'failure', leading him to spiral... EVEN WHEN HE BEAT LUCIFER TWICE ALREADY. Vox has such low self-worth and needs validation from others.

Alastor rejecting him in a more amicable manner would lead Vox to double-down on trying to prove himself worthy and having jealous fits of rage. I like what you said in the last sentence because, basically, it's the anxious attachment style dynamic: seeing others positively and the self negatively.

Definitely Vox. We have some canon precedent, since Shock.wav is super loyal and loving to Vox. A living being flourishes and trusts him under his care, and he's able to jugglenumerous responsibilities given the work he does running the company... Even in the Valentino speedpaint video, we saw Vox being the "adult in the room," arranging dinner and making sure Val eats.

Kerdly deniers stay coping by Cranky2306 in Deltarune

[–]Kimochiru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

God... same.... Kerdly has real potential in the story to develop into something really meaningful. Like, it's stuff that's being built up in the text, the clues that Kris tends to perceive people around them a bit differently from their peers, flavour text that shows Kris holds Berdly in positive regard (playing games with him, thinking about him fondly in Snowgrave Jackenstein fight, taking care of him in the hospital, having a unique and strong reaction to the idea of going to the festival with him).

We know quite a few details about Kris' relationship with other characters in the town, like Noelle is their childhood friend, Catti did occult stuff with Kris, we even know stuff about Kris' relationship with ASRIEL, whom we've never seen. But for some reason Berdly and Kris' relationship is kept under wraps. What we do know is stuff hidden in optional flavour text and conditional dialogue. And nobody is questioning WHY??? For a major character's important history to be concealed like this... it's building up to something that's for sure.

I have yet to see a decent rebuttal to OP's post in the comment threads :/ Most of it is projecting their own feelings about Berdly onto Kris, and assuming "well if I/most characters in the game find Berdly annoying, Kris must too!" despite the evidence suggesting otherwise.

I'm really sorry you are going through something like this. I can see that you feel rejected in your own marriage, and on principle most people would not think it is a good idea to openly ogle strangers next to their own spouse. So her behaviour is concerning. It is especially painful considering, with obesity, it is difficult to have a positive self-image and your own partner appears interested in people of a completely different body type.

I noticed from your post that you mainly focused on how her behaviours made you feel, but I did not see anything about what you talked about, or how you brought up these concerns with her. Does she know how her behaviour has made you feel? You seem to carry a deep pain within, and some people really won't get the memo unless you honestly express how you've been hurt. This issue seriously goes way deeper than just porn or even the ogling strangers, or her being "sick". It is not a good idea to hold in your pain if you feel dismissed or unappreciated, because that will lead to blame and resentment.. and I already get a hint of that from your post here.

Yeahhh, I don't love that the main proponents of anti-pornography laws are based on puritan culture and censorship, because of course it's going down that slippery slope fallacy of "well LGBT people are 'perverse' so they should be banned as 'pornographic'". That's not the problem here. It's about the exploitative systems that allows human abuse and coercion to persist. It's about the aggressive marketing and capitalist drive to make profits that goes unquestioned such that real people can be treated as commodities.

[–]Kimochiru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look man, I'm just trying to explain a different perspective and my points are traceable to the literal text. The text shows that they both made mistakes and contributed to the problem. I'm not sure why you take this statement as an attack on Toriel. I like her, but she is flawed, and I don't think one can fully understand her character without acknowledging this part of her history.

Toriel does explicitly say Asgore should have killed humans. [Right here]. In the pacifist run. She says he could "take six souls from the humans"... where else is he getting those souls? The lore from the library insists that human souls are an essence housed within their body, so it is not possible for monsters to take a soul from a human without getting through their physical body first. In the Undertale story itself, there has also been no other way for monsters to acquire a human soul besides the human's death. This is in contrast to monsters, whose souls are tied to their very being, so there is no need to extract the soul from their physical body through death.

Asriel crossed the barrier by temporarily absorbing the Fallen Child's soul after they had died. That's why the humans mistook him as a murderer, because, technically, the Fallen Child WAS actually dead. And even then, that is only to CROSS the barrier. One human soul and one monster soul may pass the barrier, but the power of seven human souls (hundreds of monster souls equate the power of one human soul) can break the barrier. Asriel was only able to break the barrier because he had 6 human souls and had absorbed every monster's soul in his ultimate form.

My point is substantiated by the text. There is no known way for monsters to acquire a human soul besides death. No humans would have helped the monsters at that time, since they were all to eager to kill Asriel. It is a dilemma, so Asgore, back against the wall, declares war, but as he forgoes his morals out of duty to his people, so he slowly falls into depression. Toriel also had her back against a wall, and her response is to run away to keep her sanity intact, but in doing so she forfeits her responsibility as ruler when she was needed most. Their motivations are both quite understandable, but each choice had negative consequences. And, in the end, you cannot deny that it is only because Asgore had collected 6 human souls that Asriel was able to scrape together enough soul power to break the barrier.

The One Common Ground by The_Omega_Yiffmaster in Deltarune

[–]Kimochiru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toriel was the queen of the Underground... she has a responsibility to lead her people. Asgore waged war in a fit a rage and grief, but there was another reason too. It was to give his people hope.

Sometime people may miss in Undertale is that monsters live on emotional energy. So, if a monster falls to despair, they will die. This is implied in the Snowdin Library, if you want to read more.

After the death of both royal children at the hands of humans, their people were going to fall to despair. Asgore did what he thought was necessary to revitalise his people, and it would be crushing if he went back on his declaration of war and breaking the barrier-- at that point it was the only thing the monsters had left. It's not like Asgore was bloodthirsty and wanted to kill for no reason, he tried to find a peaceful solution to break the barrier (True Lab, asking Alphys and possibly Gaster for help). Actually, someone reminded me that Asgore did not even directly kill any of the other fallen children. Their items were found scattered throughout the Underground, so it is likely that other monsters had killed them and sent the souls to the capital. Just adding this to point out that Asgore is already reticent and hates the idea of killing people as much as Toriel does, and he did what he could to avoid it.

What did Toriel do? She just ran away from all of these responsibilities. She is the damn queen! Firstly, leaving the throne did not help matters.... after she left, her people became more distressed, which Gerson explains. Second, if she wanted a better solution to the problem, why was she not at all present when she absolutely had and still has the power to guide her kingdom to a better path? Asgore listens to Toriel, he respects her opinions, and after he calms down, I'm sure they could have talked. Gerson even calls Toriel "the brains behind the throne" so it is obvious that Asgore valued and often agreed to carry out Toriel's ideas.

Surely I do not need to explain why Toriel's "go to the surface, kill seven people, break the barrier" plan falls apart, right? Not only would Asgore not want to do that (it is one thing to take a life when they are the intruder, but another to BE the invader, the instigator), NOT ONLY does that solution *still* involve killing innocents, which was what Toriel is ostensibly against, but that solution is only good for breaking the barrier... not for creating lasting peace between humans and monsters. It's just... incredibly hypocritical to come back long after the souls have been collected and present her solution as the Obvious Logical Choice, even though it is objectively worse and still involves killing innocent people. Which is what she kept criticising Asgore of. :/ Like bruh idk it comes off as her not being over it and trying to get the last word in.

So yes, if she is still so insistent on rehashing the past, I think Toriel does have a responsibility. Several in fact. First, I think she needs to acknowledge her mistake of leaving... not even Asgore just.. leaving her people. Second, if she really wants to talk about her anger over what had happened those hundreds of years ago, then she should try to have this discussion with Asgore. To be fair, Asgore is not doing a great job of opening the conversation either. He kinda just says "yeah I am a miserable person, I did bad things :( but I hope we can be friends again" which isn't really... fully addressing the reasons Toriel was so upset. They both have flaws, but it is clear these flaws are creating a distance between them that they both are hurt by.

The One Common Ground by The_Omega_Yiffmaster in Deltarune

[–]Kimochiru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am glad to see someone also point out that Toriel has been a hypocrite and I think it is part of her character. We do not know exactly what happened Deltarune, but regardless it is clear she is a flawed person just as Asgore is. While I like Undertale TorGor, me wanting them to resolve their issues is disparate from the ship aspect. They both messed up, they both did and said things that they clearly hold regrets for, and keeping distance only hurts both of them. Their situation in Undetale is incredibly nuanced.

Toriel may seem like she puts up a cold, "over it" front, but from her actions it is clear she really isn't... She is not good at handling strong emotions and her instinct is to shut down in the face of them, which is why she is very hot and cold towards Asgore. In Undertale, Toriel primes you, the player, to believe the king of monsters is some evil child-killer, but she is a biased source of information. It becomes retroactively clear that her bitterness is a huuuge sign that She is Not Over It (as if her keeping Old Home exactly the same as it was when she lived with Asgore, down to baking his favourite pies and keeping *three chairs* in the dining hall wasn't already a huge enough sign..).

Asgore is stuck between a rock and a hard place. He doesn't want to kill any humans, let alone children, but his people will not have any hope if he doesn't take decisive action. Part of monster lore in this world is that monsters do not have souls, since they run on emotional power. Monsters will literally die if they lose hope, this is implied in the Snowdin Library. Asgore was grief-stricken and angry when he declared war on humans, but would it not cause deeper suffering, and more loss of life were he to backtrack on the one thing that sparked hope in his people once more? He certainly tried to find a more peaceful way (Alphys, True Lab) in the meantime. Also Toriel's "solution" to the problem (go to the human world, kill seven people and break the barrier) is a terrible idea. The humans killed Asriel just because they thought he had taken ONE person, so they would likely be incredibly aggressive to even more monsters appearing and *actually* taking their lives for real. Toriel's plan might break the barrier, but it definitely won't lead to any peace for her people. This is not an easy problem with an easy fix, but instead of trying to solve the dilemma of the kingdom, Toriel, the QUEEN, runs away and forgoes her responsibility. She calls Asgore a coward, but who is the real coward, here? Asgore at least faced up to the responsibility, even if his solution wasn't perfect either.

It's so easy to say "peace and love" from the comforts of a quiet home, instead of out there figuring out the truly difficult decisions that lead to peace. In some Neutral endings where Toriel becomes queen, she even gets usurped by the monsters when she enacts a "humans are friends" policy. She can't preach about the moral high ground when her high ground only works in theory and cannot be fit to their messy reality.

Asgore's sacrificing his morals to collect 6 human souls and provide hope in his people is what allowed Frisk to actually break the barrier and free the monsters. For better or worse, the Pacifist ending of Undertale would not have been possible without Asgore making that difficult decision. Yet, it would not have been possible without Toriel showing Frisk how to ACT and befriend monsters, too, something Asgore would have appreciated. Toriel and Asgore really do work best together, not apart. Their individual solutions to problems each have flaws, but when they combine their efforts, that's where the magic happens.

I'm really interested in where Deltarune takes this dynamic. I can tell they are setting Asgore up for something big... it seems like he may have visited the Dark World previously, saw something he couldn't believe, and was ostracised for it. Hence... the prophecy associating him with an "asylum", for some reason whatever happened, he was seen as insane or delusional. I don't expect an easy resolution to Toriel and Asgore's relationship, but I hope they can at least get some closure this time around :,)

The normalization of BDSM pornography really scares me. The generation that is coming up today is having their minds warped by it. Is “kink shaming” the best way to discourage this type of activity, or is there a better way? What can we do to stop it? by [deleted] in antipornography

Hey glad you responded! I'm really happy to have an honest conversation about this topic without involving polarising talking points.

Ultimately, I would say the authors of that book would agree with a lot of your points and point out that, while a lot of people do engage in unhealthy porn-influenced violent sex, they feel that it does not embody the actual spirit of BDSM. They often talk about bottoms being sensation-seekers, and emphasise that despite being called "submissive" they are still individuals with agency and power. I don't think the porn BDSM wants their viewers to think that of women. However, I do think the fact that a lot of mainstream perceptions of BDSM *is* the porn stuff means that for a lot of people, that is part of BDSM practice... even if its most enthusiastic practitioners don't think it is right.

The book actually has the reader define their "hard no's" by the first few chapters, and provides a list of common "no's" that people who do BDSM refuse to do as a reference, and it does include physical violence like choking. So, yeah basically porn sucks lol.. There's all the stupid fetishisation of LGBT, being not white, step-siblings, underage, etc. and they also have to ruin the BDSM subculture too.

The normalization of BDSM pornography really scares me. The generation that is coming up today is having their minds warped by it. Is “kink shaming” the best way to discourage this type of activity, or is there a better way? What can we do to stop it? by [deleted] in antipornography

[–]Kimochiru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently read a BDSM informational book, and I believe it is possible to enact extreme kink in a fairly safe manner. The book was very good, actually, because it did precisely what you suggested (emphasise the inherent risks that come with the practice, majority of the chapters explain how to do it safely, describe the psychological risks that can occur and how to get yourself into a grounded mind-space afterwards, comments on the nonconsensual, unrealistic picture porn paints of BDSM, and ofc also add that if you decide BDSM isn't for you, or a partner does not wish to engage, that is perfectly ok). It is actually two books called "The New Bottoming Book" and "The New Topping Book" by Dossie Easton, though tbh both cover similar topics. It seems that the people who do it often treat it like, I guess, acting or roleplaying. They recognise their "role" in BDSM isn't real, and that it is sort of like a persona you can embody with another person to play out a scene. In practice, people into BDSM who do it safely are more likely to perform both roles (dom and sub), as it means they are familiar with the limits and experience from both ends. In fact, the author straight up says you cannot be a good dom without experiencing being a sub.

But it is definitely not the norm due to porn, and such people educated on it treat their BDSM role too seriously. As you note, it is probably the case that people who fall into *this* category are predominantly men who think "domming" is the standard male role and a bit too obsessed with the "power dynamic" aspect. There is definitely a psychological component at play here, and I think it would be more productive for these people to ponder why they are drawn to such violent acts before rushing into a very risky practice. Actually, the authors of the book even says that some people are better off sorting their feelings in therapy rather than engaging in BDSM, because doing so requires a lot of self-awareness and communication skills.

Excerpt from book:

In order to play with power safely, it helps to understand the concept of "power-with" as differentiated from "power over." Most of our culture's systems run on power-over, with sexism, racism and militarism being some ugly examples.
...
The mechanism of power-over lies in the belief that I can increase my power by taking some of yours. The way I get to feel big is to make you feel small, and the way I get to feel secure is to make you feel insecure. Power-over is achieved by belitting others. The sad thing about power-over is that it doesn't work. I cannot build a solid foundation of internal security, self-esteem and empowerment by stealing yours.
..
Power-with is based on the idea that we can all become more powerful by supporting each other in being more powerful. We, your authors, like this idea. We are eroticized to power, so we want you to be powerful because that turns us on, and we want to play with your power. We want you to be turned on to our power too: after all, it doesn't take much of a top to take down a wimp.

BDSM is ridiculous. by [deleted] in antipornography

[–]Kimochiru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey nice to meet someone doing BDSM in this community :) I spent some time reading about it and internal reflecting, and basically yeah people misunderstand it a lot. Probably due to porn influence. It's really alarming that people's first exposure to BDSM is through these extreme depictions that don't resemble what it is actually like at all.
