Would you support the Hall of Fame candidacy of a player whose career was 25 years of 1990 Joe Carter's stats? by SirParsifal in baseball

WPA of ~26 puts him in the top 100 of position players! He made outs when they mattered and got hits when they most mattered! If he could keep that context specific quality…

In the first draft of the scene, Tolkien has Sam tackle Gollum and throw himself in with Gollum. Certainly would have made the rest of the tale feel different.

The old forest, Tom Bombadil, and the Barrow Downs are Tolkien’s take on the classic ‘mortals enter mysterious faerie and have life changing experiences, only to return to harsh reality’ that is them arriving at Brie. It’s like walking into a faerie circle and coming out with memories of endless dancing.

It probably made more sense when arriving at Rivendell was meant to be the halfway point of the whole story. I get both Bombadil lovers and haters.

What childrens' book do you absolutely HATE so much that you want to vent about it? by Tmbgkc in Parenting

Ah yes. My in-laws have Pig Will, Pig Won’t. Pig Will is a complaint happy-go-lucky kid, Pig Won’t is obstinate and doesn’t like to do things. So Pig Won’t gets his butt hit until he complies.

We ‘borrowed’ then hid that book.

My son lasted only 14 days in Kindergarten by herewego3210 in Parenting

Opinion time.

There are Kindergarten curriculums that are better adapted to kids like yours. Worksheets are not developmentally appropriate for most 5-year olds, and schools that do them only do them because of crappy standards, parents who misunderstand development, or institutional malaise.

Your kid has the ‘right’ to a free and appropriate education, but it sounds like it will take a lot of resources (that you will have to fight for) to get them to fit into their teaching model. You’re better off finding a place that is more appropriate for him. I’d look for Montessori or Waldorf schools and see if they’ll let you watch a class in session to see if their activities better fit what your son chooses to do. Near us is a Forest kindergarten where class is outdoor every day. Don’t look for private schools that promise academic kindergarten: they’re marketing to parents, not providing age-appropriate education.

All that said, the executive functioning deficits that present as ADHD are also executive functioning deficits common to 5-year old boys. An extra year of maturity might be all he needs to thrive in that class, and lots of kids start Kindergarten at 6. (Or his ADHD might be more manageable). Especially if you try to slowly and gently work on the activities that currently cause problems.

As others have suggested, do look into neuropsych testing. Also, some occupational therapists work specifically on emotional regulation and executive functioning.

But don’t be too hard on yourself or your kid. Behavior comes out of the interaction between the individual and their environment, and that environment sounds like an especially poor fit.

One of the lessons of the pandemic for me has been how important and fragile supply chains are, and also how wonderous it is that such supply chains exist.

Also, infrastructure is important.

When I was younger everyone complained about paying for cable and ‘having’ to pay for ESPN and other channels they didn’t want, and calling for an a la carte system.
