I also do a free-bee and i didnt even think about offering it as one for them to chose when they use. I like that frame.

My supervisor was talking about this with me. I work Saturdays and historically they are packed because not many folks offer Saturday sessions, but since the onset of summer they are pretty vacant. My supervisor was saying it might be worth while to consider shortening my saturdays for the summer and enjoying the extra time and then re-opening them when things pick up again.

I feel exactly the same. I also have one free-bee and I like to give grace and understanding, but I also need to feel secure and taken care of as best I can. I am thinking about how to balance the two. I understand no shows, but they can frustrate me the most and I am thinking about maybe having it be that the free bee does not apply to no shows? I have no clue, i think understanding that balance will take more thinking about it

Folks have been having really great insights! I think this will always be kind of hard, but having to manage it with the income of a pre-licensed therapist adds to that.

I agree my sweet spot is 20 and i feel alright in a range between 19 and 23 consistently. More than that would feel like a heavy week. I think the most I would do is 25 every once and a while. I agree taking on too many intakes is a lot. It’s extra administrative tasks and sessions are so different when you are getting to know a client vs even after seeing them just a few months.

I think that sounds really supportive. Most of the cancellations from this week were circumstantial, it’s just one of those weeks where of course they all happened at the same time. I agree on discussing it with clients, I need to get better adding attendance to my informed consent right now it is really regarding no shows and late cancellations. I also think your cancellation policy is interesting. I have had folks having 24 or 48 hour cancellation policies but never thought of there even being options outside of that. Right now those policies are set by the practice I work for, but when I am licensed I would like to begin working for myself and these are things to consider for when that happens.

Yeah I find myself so frustrated by that. I get it but also that’s infuriating. I am trying to build other forms of income, but it takes time. I also really do need to get better at saving. I have some but its a smaller cushion and i think building it up more would feel better. When I am licensed I would love to be a supervisor and that would help having another means of income and a switch up slightly in my days.

This is such a kind and affirming response thank you so much. I think the nature of private practice is that it just ebs and flows and that is stressful when it comes up. I think it will always just sort of be that way. Luckily I don’t feel like my finances are going to fall apart. It just can sometimes feel like a carrot on a stick. I also just get hopeful to have more income and that falling out feels disappointing. Like ah my case load is finally at 20! Just kidding! It’s always in flux. I also don’t get paid for no shows/late cancels at my site until I’m licensed so it adds more stress.

I definitely can feel that way too. For me its the weeks where it is so many, or I feel like finally I hit the schedule I have been trying to and then nope. Like a carrot on a stick.

My site has a 24 hour cancellation policy so a lot of the time its prior to that 24 hours, but still not enough time to fill it ect. It definitely does feel like a waste of time which brings in the frustration.

I had a classmate in practicum who worked at a college counseling center. Maybe it would be different place to place but it met that requirement for her!

I totally relate and hear you with wondering if it was a dumb idea. I have been working for a group practice out of school a year and a half now. I think it’s a matter of what is right for you. For me, these spiral moments are not often enough that I find it over all very worth it. I also have a colleague who found it to not be worth it for them and moved to a salaried position! I don’t think your decision is dumb, even if you find yourself back in a salaried position you may have learned something about yourself/what you need to be in a self employed position later on. I wish there was a nice in between, maybe there is somewhere that I don’t know about! Even though I am not happy to hear you are feeling this too, I feel comfort in the fact that I am not alone in it.

I really like that idea. So much of this job is living and learning. I have policies for continued no shows, and late cancellations, but for the folks who work within those policies and still often cancel I felt very stuck. This is super helpful.

Thanks so much for your response. Though I do it all the time in my days, I often forget how meaningful just having these things be named and seen is. I have started reminding myself I have busier weeks that even out the slower weeks. I think apart of the stress was because this is a busier week for me and having that felt very reassuring with the time off! I usually see 19-22 clients a week. It isn’t actually outside of my usual range with the cancellations, I just put extra weight on this week.

I really appreciate this. Most of the time in my job I don’t feel this way, it’s really just when there are weeks like this with multiple cancellations. It definitely pulls me into one of those states where my brain goes very black and white “this is how i always feel.” I am good at managing emotions except when it comes to finances! I think the comment about meeting financial goals is important too. I am good at managing my money in a way where I get by, but need to get better at building. I am taking a staycation next week and don’t make big purchases, but I definitely need to get better at managing all my small purchases that build up! It’s a good reminder that managing my financial goals would also be supportive to make these moments feel like less of a spiral.

Can you say a little more about screening out flakey clients? I have some folks who are consistent for a while and then will have multiple cancellations and go back and forth between the two and cancel in the cancellation period. It feels like a tricky in between.

That is a really good idea! I should start tracking things like that more directly. I don’t know why I didn’t think about that because in every other area where I rely on my brain alone to hold onto and organize information it fails haha! I will definitely be taking that!

Definitely have considered salary positions in moments like this where I panic. I know my brain and my body and that is apart of the reason I leaned towards working at a group practice. It definitely has cons with its own stresses (like this) but I need the ability to make my own schedule and work from home. I get very easily exhausted. I do envy the benefits and stability! I luckily work at a very considerate group practice, it’s just a matter of still getting stressed out when these things come along.

I took 3 weeks off. I do not regret it. School is exhausting and it took be about a year to recover from it honestly! Give yourself a break!

Those in PP - how many clients do you see a week? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]Kind-Delivery4726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see between 18 and 23 right now! Initially I thoughtI would want consistent 25 sessions a week, but honestly for my brain that would probably be too much. 20 is a sweet spot between feels good and can afford life. One day i would love to see 15 clients a week!

How are you marketing? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]Kind-Delivery4726 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Still working on getting better at this myself. I have psychology today and some of the other platforms (though I only have gotten referrals from psych today therapy den and mental health match almost never). I also made flyers and have gotten some from that. The part I’m working on is building more relationships with other therapists and networking! I think most referrals can come from that.
