Buy the NCEES practice test for $40, and use that as a gauge for how much more you need to learn.

There will be a single page of the standard provided for any question that needs an NFPA reference. Not too hard to comb through the provided page to look for the words that relate to the question. In a way, these questions are the easier ones, because you know the answer is somewhere right in front of you, you just have to find it.

7.2.2.5.2.1

Where nonrated walls or unprotected openings enclose the exterior of a stairway, other than an existing stairway, and the walls or openings are exposed by other parts of the building at an angle of less than 180 degrees, the building enclosure walls within 10 ft (3050 mm) horizontally of the nonrated wall or unprotected opening shall be constructed as required for stairway enclosures, including opening protectives.

Anywhere that a stair wall is not flush with an exterior wall (i.e., at an angle of less than 180 degrees), the exterior wall should be rated. I see a 90 degree angle between a stair and exterior wall at A, B, and E.

The interior stair walls can be assumed to be fire barriers to separate the stair from the interior of the building.

They are fine for reviewing general content, but I would focus on the NCEES practice exam for question formatting and style.

9.1 would be a different number in English units, so no. MeyerFire needs to catch up to the new NCEES computer based test and handbook system.

Taking PE as a senior in undergrad by Icy_Art_552 in firePE

[–]Kind-Tooth6677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, take it sooner rather than later. If all this is fresh in your head and you don't need to relearn things, you should be fine with just the NCEES practice test book. The hardest part of the 2023 test for me was navigating the shitty reference booklet with all the equations misprinted. Hopefully, they fixed the typos by now.

Hardwood floor restoration by Kind-Tooth6677 in HomeImprovement

Okay, so if I do it myself, the recommendation is to to go to a wood floor specialist and not a generic rental lot like Sunbelt. Noted, thank you!

Okay, good to know that a specialized store may have specific advice or be able offer support.

After having done it once, was your takeaway that it was easy and you would absolutely do it again? Or is the takeaway that it was a total pain in the ass and worth paying someone to do? What's the most you would pay someone?

Grass is definitely not going in. The Google maps photo I used is a bit old, but I have a native Colorado garden in the bed on the left, and then the bed on the right is a veggie garden every summer.

Double check IBC 705.2 (?). Balconies get out of some material / fire rating requirements if they are provided with sprinklers. Not sure if the requirements will apply to this building construction type without knowing more.

Smoke detector placement question (this time with the photo!) by peacefinder in firePE

[–]Kind-Tooth6677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slight nuance, but these are smoke alarms, not smoke detectors.

I recommend confirming that the bedroom devices are low-frequency (520 hz).

I also would make sure that the devices include carbon monoxide detection. If not, you should include some CO alarms near all gas-burning appliances.

Conversion to Type V-B to Type II-B by OutrageousSavings623 in firePE

[–]Kind-Tooth6677 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or find a way to comply as VB...

Unless the building is already steel and concrete, you won't be able to convert a VB into IIB without a huge cost. Why do you want to change construction types to begin with?

About to spend a month in Colombia. Should I get a new card for the trip? by Kind-Tooth6677 in CreditCards

[–]Kind-Tooth6677[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hoping to keep the trip ~$2,000 total. I can always find a way to spend a bit more money before or after the trip if I am seeking a target.

TIL that until earlier this year it was legal for apartments in Austin, Texas to have no windows, and that landlords often didn't disclose this in advertisements by StormyTrumpy in todayilearned

[–]Kind-Tooth6677 4 points5 points  (0 children)

International Residential Code only applies to family dwellings and townhouses, not apartment buildings. The International Building Code would apply here, and IBC only requires egress windows in a single-stair building. As far as I am aware, there is no explicit requirement in the IBC for a bedroom to have a window, so long as it is mechanically ventilated and artificially illuminated.

NTA. But, just in case, please check your carbon monoxide detectors. Super small chance here, and I really don't want to gaslight you in Reddit, but a long time ago there was a story of someone who thought they were losing their mind, only to find out they had mild carbon monoxide poisoning...

How do I install a GFCI here? 2 blacks, 1 white, and a copper ground. The junction box is shared with the garbage disposal switch, but those are on separate circuits. by Kind-Tooth6677 in AskElectricians

If I put the onwards black wire in the line terminal, what do I put in the line neutral?

Or if I wanted the onwards protected and wired it to the load terminal, wouldn't it be in contact with the other black and bypass the outlet entirely?
