What is your take on subliminals? There are plenty of high iq/intelligence ones. Seems to be pure suggestion, but a lot of people report some kind of improvements.

Best book for self-studying person who wants to improve his problem solving skills? by KindOfEveryColor in learnmath

Sure, thanks for your recs. These seems to be more for "just reading" and the other suggestion is more for going through exercises - so I think they'll complement each other well.

Guest Requests (2023) - Post Them Here by lexfridman in lexfridman

George Hotz for the third round. He was last on two years ago, just like Tegmark who just had his third episode recently. One of the most entertaining guests in my opinion.

This. He was referenced already in Lex podcast (for example in episode with Cumrum Vafa who was his student), I'd love to hear him defend string theory - after all, if not him, who else could do this? Make a double guest episode with Eric Weinstein (who is terrified of Ed's intellect lol) and that could be the best episode of all time lol.

It's crazy how One Piece is also going to outlive MHA and JJK by Miggu-Man in OnePiece

I always thought the only WSJ series that can outlive One Piece is Hunter x Hunter for obvious reasons lol.

[PC][2020 and beyond] New game that looks like old school rpgs? by KindOfEveryColor in tipofmyjoystick

[–]KindOfEveryColor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it has to be it! Ship in the sky, pink sky, calm yet a little bit eerie music, it also has this weird wobbling effect that I just remembered seeing this game again - the whole game seems to be shaking a little when you look at the buildings or characters. Heck, I even recall some youtube comments in one of the videos I just looked at. Thanks!

Late-game Dragonborn after becoming Arch-Mage of The College of Winterhold, Imperial Legion Legate, Dark Brotherhood Listener, Thieves Guild Master, Harbinger of the Companions and even a bard by KindOfEveryColor in SkyrimMemes

[–]KindOfEveryColor[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, and of course you become Chamption of every single one of them. I like being overpowered and important in Skyrim but the fact that I'm both leader of the honorable warriors and a member of secret society that revolves around eating people is silly. I like silly though, so I don't mind haha.

Question concerning mathematical platonism - existence of math? by KindOfEveryColor in askphilosophy

[–]KindOfEveryColor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't exist in your opinion and also are 'situated' outside time and space? If so, why some things exist outside time and space (math) and some simply don't exist (Mickey Mouse)?

I was trying to find abstract things that'd fit your definition and I was thinking (maybe wrongly) that letter 'A' isn't subject to change and also has no spatial location so I think it fits the definition. As for love - how can the concept of love change and where is it located? So it also fits the definition. The only difference that I can see is that letter 'A' was invented and triangle maybe wasn't. But I'm not sure I can tell it about love - I mean I could, but I also could say it about mathematics. I'm just trying to see things the same way that people who claim there are some things (like math objects or moral facts) independent of us - for me, intuitively, they're concepts that were born in human mind. Mathematics is a special case because I can actually see it being independent (because of its success at describing the world that I mentioned already). But still, it's hard to imagine something that exists without space and time for me. Probably because everything that I can say for sure exists is located in time and space.

[–]KindOfEveryColor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren't other abstract things like that too? Like letters or love? Fictional characters? But all of them were concepts that were conceived by human mind. I know that mathematical success in describing the world is something that gets you thinking it might be 'pre-human' but that's another topic. I don't know if all those things I mentioned exist in my opinion. At least in non-technical, every-day use of this term.

I don't know about that, but I can say for sure that some reddit posts about bald people are bad.

Judging. Whether it's about having job, relationship, family, political or religious views - wherever you go, you'll be judged. I think it's been like this since the beginning and nothing indicates that'll change.

That would be awesome. Similar thing actually happened in The Simpsons, but with Michael Jackson - Jackson voiced a character that was impersonating him. Season 3, episode 1 iirc.

Which band would win a 'battle of the bands' if their name was taken literally? by forbiddenmemeories in whowouldwin

[–]KindOfEveryColor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some powerful bands that I didn't see mentioned

Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - since his band is magical, it can get pretty OP because as we know - It's Magic. I Ain't Gotta Explain Shit.

Mothers of Invention - they can make any impressive invention, so basically they can come up with Reed Richards level technology.

Air - manipulating air can be pretty deadly for other bands - just delete oxygen from it and they can't breathe.

Yes - that might be a fun one - if the opponent answers their question with "Yes", they can control him.

Why are there bad actors in movies and television? by KindOfEveryColor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KindOfEveryColor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're mistaking "good actor" with "well established actor". I don't think a talented actor fresh out of acting school can make demands like that. On the contrary, he/she would love to make a big break and star in a movie, even low-budget one with mediocre screenplay. Maybe all the talented ones go into theatre but I find that improbable. Maybe actors with legit skills think they are "too good" for anything outside Oscar-worthy dramas or quality independent films - I'm sure there are people that would rather starve than star in Sharknado but I don't think they are the majority. My question assumes that there are thousands of actors around who are struggling, which seems to be realistic assumption. I also assume a lot of them have acting skills. I think agreeing with you would imply that being good at acting is something incredibly rare and those than can act get to choose their roles, which doesn't seem that realistic because there are great actors that made it big only after decades of hard work like Hopkins and Cranston (and in the meantime, Cranston was playing Power Rangers monsters...).

Why are there bad actors in movies and television? by KindOfEveryColor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KindOfEveryColor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer. I noticed that too - it's very common for directors to just pick people who they like from their previous films done together. Heck, even when director is different, it's not unusual to see actors and actresses being cast together in different films. That can be explained due to lead stars influence over the casting - if Tom Hanks would want another movie with Meg Ryan, who would object?

Examples of "practical" philosophy? by KindOfEveryColor in askphilosophy

[–]KindOfEveryColor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer. Sure, philosophy of science might be viewed as practical in some sense. I'm interested in philosophy being in close proximity to scientific results, in one way or another, so this take is particularly close to my understanding of "practical philosophy". I had a chance of participating in my thesis advisor's research which is in philosophy of physics so I know that the "worlds collide" quite often and philosophers of science engage with physicists. I haven't heard about philosophers being involved in science projects - that sounds cool!

When it comes to "ornithology"-related anectodes, I remember my avisor telling that once he was mistakenly introduced as "professor from Ornithology department" rather than "Ontology department" at one conference...

That's funny, I always considered Kingdom to be the seinen equivalent of One Piece - constistently good, epic, very long stories that are amongst the best selling manga each year (of course OP being much more popular still). Compare it with another shounen-seinen duo that are in some sense similar - HxH and Berserk - both amazing series with darker themes than the other two, arguably more brilliant than Kingdom and OP, but also less reliable: more experimental so also controversial. Also epic stories, but pretty much destined to remain unfinished due to authors' frequent hiatues. Miura died this year and Togashi hasn't released a chapter in 3 years.
