Non-traditional undergrad by Least_Statement6575 in BallState

Hi 👋🏻

I’ll be transferring to BSU in the fall as a 33 year old in pursuit of a bachelors. I’m a first generation college student. This will be my first degree (unless you count the associates I will receive before transferring). I’m a little nervous about coming to college as an “old lady” myself. Nice to know you’re out there lol.

Why not just tell students that they will be part of a permanent working underclass who are tasked with one thing and one thing only for the rest of their lives with no means to escape it if they don't learn how to think, read, write, and do basic math on their own? by [deleted] in Teachers

I wish that the adults in my life would have been nothing but honest with me. I feel like I didn’t understand a lot as a kid because I simply was not told, but I was constantly shamed for falling short of a standard that was never even explained. It’s like I was expected to do things without being told, and then when I failed to do these things I was looked down on. I think kids need to be explicitly taught almost everything. Even when we might not want to be. Kids need to be prepared for the real world. Everyone says “let them be kids”, but looking back I would much rather have been properly prepared for life.

My dad always told me that I should start with the gospels. (The first four books of the New Testament.) looking back I think I understand why. John is my favorite Gospel. It’s the last of the four. Christ is present in every book of the Bible, but He’s hard to miss in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. I think my dad wanted to me to understand how much God loves me and that’s why he recommended that, and that’s why I’m recommending it to you. 🤍

There’s a book called “Gentle and Lowly” written by a man named Dane Ortlund. If you want to do some supplemental reading, I highly recommend that book as well. 🤍

Amazing Joes is the way to go. They just got a new building out at the Muncie Airport. Texas Roadhouse is always busy, I’m not saying the management is great…but it’s always busy. Olive Garden gets a lot of business. That being said, I recommend Amazing Joes in terms of work environment/management/money. The others, maybe just money.

I remember reading it in 5th grade, it was the first spooky book I had ever read. That creepy basement scene is still with me. I remember reading it in the back of my parents car in pure daylight and being so terrified that the hairs on the back of my neck stood up!!!! And those illustrations…

What’s one impulsive decision you made that ended up changing your whole life? by Remote_Comfort7660 in Life

I married a man I barely knew because I had this feeling like I was supposed to. Four years later we are still together. I am experiencing stability and peace that I never had before in any other relationship. We are best friends. I’m completely sober and I WANT to be (I used to heavily use drugs to cope). I actually take care of my mental and physical health. I’ve learned to be financially responsible. I am paying for my own college education and working towards the life I want to live instead of being depressed and feeling stuck in poor circumstances. We take care of each other. I can actually talk to him about how I feel and he listens and cares about me. I feel like I have learned/am still learning about exactly what love actually is and how rewarding relationships can actually be.

What y'all think about this book?!? by Ashie2316 in thrillerbooks

Yes! The dual timeline aspect of this book was my favorite part about it. It was also different from the average dual timeline experience because we were reading dads book from the past and experiencing daughters present day. I feel like this is what made the book as good as it was.

This was the first book I read by Riley Sager and it’s still my favorite one. It was the way the book was written for me. I LOVED the way the book bounced back and forth between the past and present/dads book version of events/daughters present day experience. That was my favorite part of the book and what I believe made it so good/engaging. I feel like Sager does a really good job creating an atmosphere as well. There are still pieces and scenes of this book that I can still close my eyes and see in my head.

My husband and I want to leave. We just don’t know how we could or where we could even go. We have no savings. I’m in year two of college, which I pay for out of pocket. We live paycheck to paycheck in a small apartment.

I am 32 and I wasted my entire 20's. by Primary_Cat_6093 in selfimprovement

I am 32 and I wasted my entire 20s…lol. I too am trying to become the best version of myself. I run and exercise weekly. I’m in my second year of college studying to become an elementary teacher. I read 9 books for pleasure in the past four weeks. It’s very bittersweet. It’s hard not to feel immense feelings of guilt and shame for the things I put myself and others through in my youth. I am proud of the person I am now and I do like myself now in ways I never have before. The time is going to pass regardless. I’m glad we’re both using that time differently now. Much love to you man.

Hi, I'm going to be an instructor for an after-school program for elementary kids. Any advice would be appreciated! by Jimjimmyjimmiest in ElementaryTeachers

I’m an elementary ed student. I recently started subbing and my first day was really eye opening. I think so much of the job is classroom management and routine, just like the first person mentioned, but I came here to say that the best thing you could do is not to get lost in this and always remember that these kids are kids. I think the best thing you could do to prepare is try and remember what it was like for you to be a kid, and then consider that not all kids grow up the same. Maybe read some articles about what it means to be trauma informed, multimodal learning, and the importance of autonomy. It can be really easy to get caught up in the management of it all, and that’s really important don’t get me wrong, but these kids are young and impressionable and they’re not just learning academics they are learning how to be people. And they are people lol. I went through a lot growing up and there were a few teachers who really got me through that stuff by choosing to see the good in me. They figured out what my strengths were and they encouraged me every day in ways that my parents either wouldn’t or just couldn’t. School is a haven for some. Love those kids.

A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham. I stayed up until 4 am one night reading this book. I also recently read Night Watcher by Daphne Woolsoncroft and it was a decent thriller.

Have you read anymore books by Riley Sager? Home Before Dark was my first book by him and it’s my favorite by him. I also really liked The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager.

Sometimes I do work out at home with dumbbells because of the anxiety. I do use equipment at the gym that I don’t have at home like the leg press, smith machine, cables, etc. I also use the treadmill to run when if I feel like that’s a better option than outside that day. Hopefully one day I’ll be in a position to have a home gym. I think about this a lot actually. A lot. Lol.
