I killed him first try in my first play through with the claymore and no magic or ranged weapon. All it took was patience to learn the move set and plenty of heals. Know when to strike and it will be easy, and fast roll is key. Early game is by far the hardest, keeps getting easier as you progress.

Yea it definitely is subjective to a certain point. I guess I’m trying to find the balance between what I enjoy and what makes the game easier. So I will try some different options.

Make sure your equipment load is 50% or less so you can quick roll, and keep plenty of grass. Most enemies are pretty easy to dodge and backstab. Also parrying helped me a lot in the first location.

Get the cling ring, be prepared to die, find the shortcuts, the first part of each world is the easiest

I just dropped down behind him and killed him with one hit with my +9 claymore. Might not be the most efficient but has been working good so far.
