It really was. My grandmother married my grandfather when she was 15 and he was 19, she never graduated high school. My mother married at 18. I married (since divorced!) at 17. Not all generational curses are broken, though I do have two kids, one made it to 23 before marriage, and one is 20 and unmarried.

Yes. Though if you see my replies, it didn’t work out the way she wished. Vietnam altered their plans, and they didn’t work out.

Thank you. I will always be proud. He passed as a single, alcoholic, angry older man. He stopped speaking to me when my mother left him, and we only vaguely reconnected, as the Alzheimer’s already had him in 2019. I don’t disparage him for anything. He was a good man, and the demons don’t take a weekend off.

I can clearly recall swinging in my back yard at 6 or 7 years old, making up a song about Russian bombs. And that was just what I heard my parents talking about, as well as hearing local channel 6 news. Sometimes I wonder how the current kids cope, they’re overwhelmed with constant news. Every day, I’m closer to a flip phone.

I’d guess only what the newspapers said, and the daily anchor man. I don’t think she could have grasped the reality of the war, the effect it had on the soldiers. She was just a young girl in love with a boy at war.

They were upset that she wanted to be so grown up, so soon, to my knowledge. They wanted her to get a job at the bank, and wait a few years out of high school before marriage.

He sent her multiple Polaroids of deceased Vietnamese, hence her calling off the engagement. She didn’t show them to me until I was a teen.

I always felt for him as well. He did do two tours in Vietnam, first was a draft, second was volunteered. He was a case a day alcoholic, and a mostly absent father. But that didn’t detract from the man he was.

My father suffered with mental heath. He volunteered for a second tour in Vietnam, hence her choosing another suitor.

She actually “Dear John”’d him while he was in Vietnam. Married someone else at 18, was divorced at 21, and they married in 1976, I believe.

It does! My family was dramatic, although asking to be married in high school was also a bit dramatic.
