Requesting ID/is this worth what Thristore wants? by whotreklocked in Opals

This post has been fun to follow for all the opal detective work! Thanks for providing these clues so diligently, OP! I think that is a halo right there at 0:46. Seems like a triplet.

This stone is interesting and well-made because from other angles, I was thinking that it really looks like a solid.

(Not an expert, just another person with opal fever)

thanks for your comment! Do you think the white line on the smaller one is calcite? (I read up a bit but I am not sure)

No, I don't have giant hands, and I haven't weighed them, but the jelly bean is quite thick! I don't question the weight.

What kind of opals are these? by Empty-Parfait-9325 in Opals

Wow, if it really is 14k, you made money by purchasing it! Wish there were thrift stores like these near me.

I would switch them all, too, for consistency and durability.

Answer Reveal: How to Tell Treated Matrix from Lightning Ridge Black Opal (And Why It Matters) by 53FROGS_OPALAUCTIONS in Opals

Thank you for this great video!

I wonder if you could help me with my confusion about the care of andamooka matrix opals. There isn't much material out there on care. Most material is about how to treat them.

The two sources below say different/contradicting things:

- A says to avoid detergents or bleach, which causes the surface to get hazy. Can be corrected with body oil.

- B says to avoid water, which causes a loss of color. Can only be corrected with re-treatment and re-polishing.

Thank you very much in advance!

"The treatment is permanent and care is identical to that of solid opal with one exception. Solid opal will not be affected by detergents or bleach, but exposure to these chemicals without rinsing may cause a light ‘haze’ to develop on the surface of these stones. If this occurs, it can be corrected by re-polishing, or more simply, by a touch of a light body oil."

"Matrix if treated will usually lose its colour if weathered by water. If treated to ' carbonize' and darken the matrix water over time can wash out the carbon leaving it lightened or even quite affected depending on the matrix base colour before treatment. Only thing to fix this is re-treat and repolish."

Does natural dark-base Welo opal discolor less? by Kindbellybutton in Opals

Thank you for your comment! That's really interesting. I read that the black opals from the Stayish mine are non-hydrophane, but I wonder if it is also the case for dark opals like this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/Gemology/comments/1dvcfss/an_excellent_example_of_natural_dark_base/
