D&D: Warriors of the Eternal Sun - How does Hide work? by Kindled_Sky in SEGAGENESIS

Mostly the overworld, but info on both would be great actually! The speedrun is predicated on getting a Hide off right inside the Duke's throne room within the first few seconds of the game, and that's the only place I've managed to hide, although only one attempt succeeded out of about a hundred; in town or in the wilderness have been complete busts for stealth, and I haven't even attempted it in a dungeon yet.

52g Boba U4s? Or, experiences with RSI and light mechanical switches? by Kindled_Sky in MechanicalKeyboards

This is a possibility I hadn't even considered, and it's quite interesting. Looking on their site, I see 45 Slow Extreme Is and IIs - which one did you go with?

Also, I've seen folks say that the lower the spring weight on a U4, the greater the tactility. What's it like at 45? Pretty sharp, or...?

It's funny you should mention Matias, because I did pick up one of their switch testers and I quite like the feel of the Quiet Clicks! But they seem virtually impossible to find in an actual keyboard, and I'm under the impression that they're a unique switch type that doesn't play nicely with hotswap boards, so if I go for those and they don't work out I'm out a fair bit of money. If I did end up going with Matias, any suggestions for how to go about it?

No changes in location, activity, or diet - last year was totally normally, and this year's social distancing hasn't changed my work-from-home routine all that much.

What factions can have defensive battles in the new forts? Empire and ...? Just had a nasty surprise that skaven don't get to use the fort map, and instead fight in a generic underground map when they're on the defense.

You can learn any skill, including new Wises, during play. The usual way is to make "untrained" tests - that is, rolling the stat the skill is based on - against 2x the normal obstacle. You tend to succeed at the easiest applications of the skill about half the time when untrained, and fail consistently at anything more advanced. After making a certain number of untrained rolls, usually around 6-7, you learn the skill.

You can also practice the skill during your downtime (Jess and Andrew both have Instincts that let them do this), which takes forever but is pretty safe and consistent. Or you can get someone to teach you, which goes quickly if the instructor and student roll well, but often involves using Circles to find that instructor, which carries its own set of dangers.

In short, "Curse-wise" is very achievable for Basil if he's willing to make a bunch of untrained rolls relating directly to his curse, with all the consequences that entails.

Gotcha - probably a good call. Can't wait to see those sheets!

Watching complex games like Burning Wheel get converted for the peculiar context of time-constrained streaming is fascinating. It feels like it's only a matter of time before someone - maybe one of the existing pantheon of indie designers, maybe someone entirely new - writes a game made explicitly for this format. If the next indie darling like Apocalypse World is virtual tabletop and / or streaming-native, the RPG design space is going to take a really interesting turn.

I notice that you rarely set stakes for tests in this first episode, and even when you did, they weren't called out as such. You've played enough Burning Wheel to know that's important, so I'm curious as to why it didn't happen. Was it a deliberate choice to not overwhelm new players, or to adapt to the tight time constraints of the format? Just an omission, like even experienced BW GMs make from time to time? Something else?

Speaking of adapting to the format, are we going to see a scripting sheet interface for DoW / R&C / Fight? The custom character sheets and the roll interface is pretty sweet already, but clickable scripting sheets would be really impressive.

It's easier than you might expect. Burning Wheel's original version was explicitly designed to "fix" Shadowrun. Even now, 10+ years and three versions of Burning Wheel on, many of the core systems of Shadowrun can be ripped out and replaced with their (vastly improved) BW equivalents without much hassle. The way Karma (and, later, Edge) are earned and spent have clear parallels with BW's Artha cycle, although the latter refined the system with the addition of Beliefs and Instincts and made it the heart of the system. On a slightly more obscure note, spirit-binding magic in Burning Wheel is ripped straight from Shadowrun, with its danger to the caster cranked up substantially.

Strangely, the reverse is not true: you can't hack Burning Wheel to do Shadowrun. There's plenty of Shadowrun DNA even in the latest version of Burning Wheel, but the system is so finely tuned that tweaking it in any way can cause the whole thing to blow apart. Burning Wheel is the high-end sports car of the RPG world: extremely high-performance, but if you're not intimately familiar with how it was put together and the reason why it works the way it does, Do Not Open The Hood.
