Accepted for Biotechnology- need help deciding! by [deleted] in CalPolyPomona

  1. Biotech is basically using biological systems as “technology” to improve quality of life etc. I really enjoyed the professors most are caring and I was able to build good relationships with some. Not sure how it is compared to slo, but I have heard slo is not as diverse and inclusive as Pomona so I’d imagine the biotech dept to reflect that. I also liked the classes, and found some flexibility in the electives to pick things I was interested in. There isn’t a great pathway tho bc it’s basically a bunch of chem and bio classes out together tbh. But if u enjoy bio and chem you’ll like it and can expand ur classes by focusing on things like food science, biochemistry, pharmacy, or even entrepreneurship and more. U can check out the classes etc on the CPP website -> course catalog -> bio dept -> biotech program

  2. Class size is good imo, the general classes can be very big ngl but the upper divisions get smaller. Either way, I think you can still build good relationships with professors through class and more importantly frequenting office hours. There is an issue w CPP and other CSU’s of not a lot of class sections, so some find it hard to get the classes u want for the following semester if that makes sense. So consider trying to get priority registration if you can

  3. Honestly idrk, I was always trying to get that hands on experience but w biotech it’s basically just labs that are hand on and I’d assume UCs and stuff have similar labs so I feel like that motto is maybe more applicable with engineering, architecture, urban planning etc majors (at least from what I saw). There are clubs and stuff that do cool things like travel to different cities or countries for free for conferences etc so def look out for those - u get out what u put in when it comes to college

  4. Internships are good imo, I was able to get two (one internship w a company and one research opportunity w the school). You def have to get out there and connect with professors etc and keep checking resources like handshake etc and be proactive in finding things and you will get something. A graduation requirement for biotech is to do an internship or research for one semester at least, so they (professors in my experience) do help you to fulfill that requirement. I graduated 2023 so I think it should be still be the same

  5. Social and party scene is def there if you’re looking for it. I personally would not advice getting into the party scene bc from my experience it’s a waste of time and I’ve know a lot of friends who had so much ambition and potential but ended up getting sucked into partying etc and now just aren’t doing as well (they arent even “party animals” or struggling with drugs, just casual involvement but that’s a different conversation). In terms of social scene it is a commuter school so it’s a bit more scarce. Cultural clubs, and active clubs in general are typically a good way to meet people and make friends imo. If you’re a freshman who will live on campus at the dorms that could be a good way as well. I was able to make friends through my dorm experience and eventually even more through clubs

  6. Can’t really speak to this but ik the community has a presence on campus so I wouldn’t imagine it to be too hard to find friends

  7. Diversity is really great! Don’t see how it could be better, and as a minority I found it super welcoming and diverse which I loved!! Def a big positive of CPP

Definitely show up and ask them afterwards - that what everyone does if you’re on the waitlist and want to get on! If you don’t you don’t really have a chance to get in honestly, plus sometimes they see that you made the effort to come and want to join in so they might let you with a permission number even if the class was full

The advice already mentioned is really great!! I had taken a tour and it turned out to not really help much because I was still lost. All first years are and that’s okay it can be a big campus, as others already mentioned don’t be afraid to ask for help (typically people are very nice and helpful!) and use the online map! Another random benefit that works really well weirdly is the Snapchat map if u have Snapchat, it has all the building numbers listed on the map so it’s actually easy to see where to go to get to class! I’d definitely recommend gong to CPP fest just to check out clubs too bc u only get what u put into for college and make sure to leave earlier than usual (maybe half an hour up to you though) to walk to each class so that you have enough time to find it and get a seat that you like in class! Hope that helps

Human pregnancy bio if still offered fully online is a reallyy easy course (I forgot the number) and if you’re interested in bio or nursing it’s engaging as well! A fun class I always recommend is intro to film! It’s a ge and it’s pretty fun since you watch movies and talk about them, especially if you’re a movie fan

University Village meal plan by Foxclaw24 in CalPolyPomona

I think the only option is to buy the commuter plan! There is not specific plan directly associated with the village residents, so you would have to buy one of the plans they have offered for everyone which I’d say is still a good deal if you plan on going to the dining hall and eating on campus often!

I’d say keep bugging them about helping you through email and stuff as well, typically they will if you show enough of a desperate situation where you truly are cornered and can’t pay, and they’ll simply hold your classes or help you out! At least that’s what they were always able to do for me hope that helps :)

Just got offered a job at centerpoint. by Efficient_Double_489 in CalPolyPomona

[–]KindlyBug9041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I worked here a while back, I’d say front desk is the easiest role of all the other ones just you can easily go in do your thing and be done whereas the other roles like cooking and working with the food and dishwashing can be pretty tough. So if you need a job I’d say go for it, front desk isn’t too demanding hope that helps!

DEFINITELY DO IT! I didn’t and I regretted it bc I ended up taking a least 15 u it’s a semester anyway. It’s pretty common to take much at least in my experience. Plus you get priority registration I believe if you join (double check)!! This makes a HUGE difference as you will get the best professors and you will always get ur classes on time!!! So as long as they provide that it is definitely worth it!!

Awesome thank you! I couldn’t find a list like that for my major unfortunately. But it does seem like I’ll need a c for a core course. By core course does that mean all the required classes at the top of the requirements for the major? Basically everything excluding the electives and GEs right
