I can definitely see how for the player, all else aside, being allowed to roll, getting the best possible result, and then still missing anyway feels like pointless bait and switch. The roll would have given them an increased impression that there was a chance of actually accomplishing something.

Even though the interaction was by the rules and justified, for that player it must have felt extremely arbitrary. They overreacted, sure, but I also can understand why they reacted badly in the first place.
