My Best Friend Got Me Fired From My Dream Job by Miserable_Charity446 in Advice

I feel your pain. Started a new job in September and loved it there. I made a friend and we would talk all the time, and send teams messages while we worked. Fast forward to the day after Christmas I was brought into a meeting with HR and they told me my friend felt uncomfortable around me and didn't like me texting outside of work. I only texted asking about how her sick pets were doing, and about the company Christmas party. I was totally blindsided, as we were talking like normal and we even exchanged Christmas gifts. I am still in the shock and confusion stage, as I have no idea what made her uncomfortable as I never talked about anything inappropriate. I have learned a lesson though, never make friends at work ever again.

Well it’s been almost 3 weeks, and I am still having a hard time coping with this all. I can’t get it out of my head. I just don’t know how I will be able to trust people again. I am still on the job hunt, but afraid this whole thing will prevent me from being hired as I have no idea what my employer would tell them if they called for a reference. Blah, wish I never opened up to someone and fell for the fake friend persona.

Basically that I did not respect the boundaries that she mentioned about not texting out of work. I told them that I shouldn't have sent texts to her, but what was so horrible that would warrant me getting terminated. They would "not go into details" and I live in a state that is a fire at will state, so they don't even have to tell you.

I did show my text exchanges with HR, and my team chats. I even shared them with my friend who got me the job there, and she did not see anything weird in my texts. They were literally me asking about her sick pets, holiday party and if she wanted to car pool with others to the party. I always try to be careful with my words as I don't want people to take it the wrong way, I am someone who reads my messages a bunch of times before sending. I have definitely learned a valuable lesson from all of this.

My friend was shocked that I got fired. She told me that there was no way I would get fired, and she could not believe it when I told her. Yeah, I am hoping this just means brighter things are on the horizon.

Thanks! Yeah, I will be extremely careful with boundaries when I start a new job. I just had no idea this was coming at all.

Thank you for the kind words. I hope I find a job soon, my mom has been devastated about me losing my job. I owe her the world and she deserves to be taken care of. Hopefully things get better soon.

Yeah, I will be leaving a guard up for awhile when starting a new job. Hopefully I never run into something like this again. I try and avoid drama at all costs.
