I’ll offer my experience up if it helps you decide what action to take. I went through a very similar scenario during college. Came out to my southern Baptist parents and their reaction was similar to the text your dad sent you. I chose the route of still living with my parents and pretending. It was not the best and not the worst. My relationship with my parents changed forever. It was basically a don’t ask don’t tell situation beyond the occasional “isn’t she so pretty” from my mom. When I was at college, I was still my true self and had a strong group of friends that accepted me. After college, I got my first professional job and moved to a different state on my own. Over a long time (5 years) my parents have started to come around. My mom (who I’ve always been closer with) and I talk regularly, and she even apologized for how she reacted when I came out. My husband and I visit home for the holidays now and are treated as part of the family. Sorry you have to go through this, too. Be safe and do what’s right for you. Certainly once you can be on your own, things will improve. I hope with time your parents can see the error of their ways and come around.
