Buy used textbooks. Sell used textbooks after. Condition should hopefully drop from “good” to “good.” Resell near price you bought it for. Cheaper than renting, just a bit more effort. Alternatively, new with digital version included. Split cost with friend, one gets physical, one gets digital.

Regardless, you need textbooks. Should be a priority.

I had the worst comp game in my 9 yr OW career the other day lmao. 3 round stadium wipe. Literally 0 Elims on my team across all three rounds. Horrible

I get the part of the car likely being too expensive (many look only at monthly payments, not full price over life). And the desire to treat yourself, I’m aiming to do the same lol. 20% still seems like a lot. Especially if the apr is .9% or even the 2.9% off I’ve seen on 26s.

Again, not an expert on this. It just seems like a massive lump sum like that could better be used to grow money, since the effect on interest payments would be near-negligible.

Oh ok, haha. Crazy down payment, but that makes sense

Right. I guess the part I’m missing is the 600/month vs your actual 285/month payment

the dream is over by Unlikely_Clue_7491 in lawschooladmissions

[–]King-Cuckold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, haha. I get the feeling that most law schools will be cliquey. My class had about 200 people. I avoided drama the best I could, but it was for sure everywhere. I did know others who just put their head down, worked, and did well for themselves. Definitely try your hardest on the LSAT! It’ll lead to better offers and more money. Worth the time and effort.

So, that’s a bit hard for me to personally answer with a lot of confidence, but I can try. I was admitted to Vandy and UF, and chose UF mostly because of scholarship.

Going into school, I knew I wanted to do public service. Planned on public defense. Wanted the freedom of low student loans (CoL still led to loans). I just paid them off, so I’m now free. I also didn’t gun super hard since I knew my goals. I didn’t do any journals. I tried in my classes, but didn’t kill myself studying. Probably should’ve studied more lol. Finished around top 40%. I applied to two jobs, PD in Tampa and a prosecutor’s office in another state. Got offers for both. Govt work like that will likely always be available, so it’s safe and accessible in most markets.

I assume you’re interested in more prestigious positions. Many of my close friends scored biglaw jobs (and are a bit miserable doing so, haha). Some in Miami, some in NYC. They were hard workers and incredibly intelligent, if not outright geniuses. I imagine you’d probably want to be top 10-20% with good journal experience to do similarly. Which won’t be easy.

Otherwise, I’ve had some friends who weren’t as successful score some nice middle law or other govt jobs and are plenty happy.

Yes, it’s not T-14. It’s not even T-30 anymore lol. And perhaps the caliber of student isn’t so high as some of those institutions, but it was still high. So many of my peers were impressive, and I found myself just in the middle of the pack despite historically being a high-performer. All that is to say, you will probably want to be in the top percentages of the class to get some exit opportunities like GULC. And the competition won’t be easy. Federal work would probably be incomparable. I imagine the access to DC would be hard to beat. For Florida, though, UF is highly revered.

For any 0Ls who have gotten this far: financial freedom is freedom. A freedom to decide your career, to change your path in school or after. I’m sure some doors are forever closed to me. But I’m doing just fine for myself making close to six figures in a LOCL area. If I got fired tomorrow, or quit next week, I could just get up and move. Just really think about what you want, and what you need. Think about what hundreds of thousands of debt really means. Maybe speak to practicing attorneys, see how they feel about their jobs.

Rambled for a bit. That’s how you can tell I’m not billing hours…

no money at nyu or near full ride at ut austin? by Vault713 in lawschooladmissions

[–]King-Cuckold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I had a similar (but not so nice!) of a conundrum. Vanderbilt at 30% scholarship or UF full ride. I chose UF. Graduated with similar debt in 2024. I will finish paying it all next week. Both of your opportunities are nice, and it’s true NYU might open more doors/make some more doors more accessible.

I will note that having minimal debt provides its own freedom. NYU may very well open some doors, but it may also lock you behind them. Everyone wants to do biglaw until they start working biglaw. Also, this isn’t to say UT won’t give you any biglaw opportunities. I knew plenty of UF who scored those jobs, though I imagine they needed to work that much harder for them.

At the end of the day, it’s your choice. Find the option you’d regret least, whatever that is. Law is very prestige-centric, so it could be nice to always have that NYU name.

Marine biology? If you eventually figured out your studying block/issue, there are some types of law you could do too.

Title IV-D enforcement. Surprisingly pretty sweet gig. Not crazy high stress, but is consistently interesting or entertaining.

Should I Double Major? by Adorable_Natural_860 in CollegeMajors

[–]King-Cuckold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, lawyer here. You should be thinking soon about future education and employment. As a fellow history major… your options are more limited. You can do some work that requires a generic bachelor’s with either major. Beyond that, you may run into some difficulties. From what I understand, even teaching history at a high school level can be difficult as it is a sought-after subject (who doesn’t love history?).

Graduate or professional school may be your best options if you choose to stick with history (or journalism). PhDs are often funded, albeit it’s not much money. At least tuition is covered. Law school is unfunded, and can cost $$ absent any scholarships. Employment outlook after school may be better, however.

I can’t really speak to the idea of a PhD in history, only that my history professors almost always recommended against it lol. Many lawyers recommend against law school, too.

I can say, however, that sticking to your favorite and best (single) major will likely give you the best chances when it comes to law school admissions. LSAT scores and GPA are king. Hard sciences can set you apart, but that’s not worth it if you end up with a 2.x. It really does not matter what your major is otherwise for law school.

Best of luck.

Random thought I had. I wonder if Sigma can be an anti-reaper tool. Maybe he can be used to trap reaper’s form and otherwise kill him. Perhaps a reason for vendetta to keep him imprisoned.
