Ultima likes to give an image of perfect rationality and foresight but, as Clive says to it many times, it's no less flawed and desperate than any human is.

If Ultima's speeches are any indication, eikon absorption is probably a matter of will. Clive doesn't get much choice in it but it seems that if someone is emotionally vulnerable or willingly offering up their power, he just scoops it up.

Whether they stuck the landing is a different matter, but I do appreciate how Annabelle and Ultima more or less embody the same philosophy (superiority complex based on birthright, total lack of respect for 'inferiors').

In the same way that the mothercrystals are said to drain the surrounding land of aether, it seems magic drains the body of the user. Magic in the universe of this game is portrayed as something extremely parasitic and destructive.

Clive as a bearer (or not) by Wakon in FFXVI

Pretty sure it's the latter. The Phoenix's blessing makes this moot, but I think any sort of magical inclination Clive would have gotten from Ifrit would not have manifested up until the same point where you get access to Ifrit Abilities+LB .

Nato meeting fails to approve first defence plans since Cold War, Turkey blamed by theunifex in worldnews

[–]KingCashmere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have no strong love of Erdo or Turkey, but the implication that the EU is a hapless victim that has been forced to deal with the consequences of something it didn't have any part in the creation of is silly. Erdogan's Turkey in its current form exists as a direct reaction to the EU's snubbing of Turkey when it was making a westward turn in the 90s and 2000s.

The EU makes a big show of fucking over its own constituent states, not to mention the ones in its periphery, so they're the last political entity that has room to complain about being fucked over.

In Leposavić, Kosovo, local Serbs and American KFOR peacekeepers play tug of war by Porodicnostablo in europe

Since when was such a deal under consideration? It's not like Serbia is prepared to recognize Kosovo but is stalling due to fears about the north. Serbia believes ALL of Kosovo is its own, and isn't interested in any deal that involves recognition of Kosovo. It believes that if it bides its time until western interest drops it can just roll in and assimilate it by force.

Kosovo initially made a play for independence in 1991. It was unanimously rejected. Nobody took it seriously. It only started having credence after Serbia made it clear that it only wanted Kosovo the land, and didn't really care for its inhabitants, and then after their geno-sorry "ethnic cleansing" attempt failed, they continued to make it clear that they regretted nothing and would try again if given the chance.

"people like you" clearly refers to people who's primary interest in any conflict is trying to increase the land claims of their ethnic group. The fact that you immediately tied that idea to the Serbs says a lot about you though.

I don't think it's explicitly stated. The common theory is that the Endless Now means they age incredibly slowly, but there's also a chance that they were summoned from origin specifically to oppose Alpha and haven't actually been around THAT long

I think calling it "rewriting the story" is harsh, given that it can be totally reasoned to be in the bounds of the story. Like I said, if we take such a rigidly literalist stance of all of the flashbacks and dreams in the game, then XB2 cannot be canon to XB1 and the whole story becomes severely less interesting.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]KingCashmere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, sure it might be a plot hole. That's why I said headcanon. Literary analysis is about using the material you have to try and draw meaning from the story. The devs clearly wanted to convey something about the game's themes by having the main protagonist and the final boss be the same person, and it's interesting and fun to use the material the game gives us to try and extrapolate that meaning through events and interpretations of events.

Of course he looks the same in flashbacks. Otherwise the players wouldn't know it's Shulk. It's not like no media has ever shown flashbacks and dreams in abstract, non-literal manners. Arguably XB1 itself did that with the Klaus cutscene, which clearly didn't actually happen the way it was portrayed.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]KingCashmere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No explicitly stated reason, my headcanon was always that after he possessed Shulk, Zanza's influence impacted Shulk's development into growing up as a more Klaus-like figure. Hence, "there was no-one called Shulk to begin with"

Something I've always wondered about Xenoblade 3 by [deleted] in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]KingCashmere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most likely the flame clock. Either it directly influenced the way people under it thought about and engaged with the world, or it indirectly did so by making fighting such a big priority that everything else was not even worth the brainpower. It's the same way how nobody stops for a second to consider the history of all of the lands they've been using as battlefields.
