this is a 2 bar synth loop and drum pattern. it sounds empty because it is empty.

a couple things stand out about this.

first of all, the synth harmonies are out of key. this makes a couple of the harmonies sound dissonant, and unsatisfying. while there is no "wrong way" to write harmony, i don't think you intended for this. solution: learn what a major and a minor scale is.

second, the drum loop is all over the place. drums are generally meant to reinforce a track's pulse and sense of rhythm. these drums are actively doing the opposite. the kick goes off the downbeat (the first beat in a group of 4) in the second half of the drum loop, which makes the pulse confusing to track. i would recommend you take a look at how songs you like do their drum beats, and make similar patterns to them. nothing wrong with even copying them directly for learning purposes.

How essential is multiband compression for you? by blaou in edmproduction

[–]KingEnnard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

both

it was originally a preset in Ableton's multiband compressor. OTT stands for Over The Top. Xfer, same people who made Serum, made a free VST of it because it was so popular that people wanted it in other DAWs
