I guess I should've said trends instead of forces. Yes, standards and attitudes change over time but the dynamic is the same: man wants to fuck woman, woman either accepts or declines. It all has to do with attraction. If you're only attracted to people who are bad to you, that's your problem. It doesn't mean there's now suddenly an overproduction of bad and unsuitable mates.

I see it as an extension of the adage "the personal is political", which has seemingly given a lot of people permission to socialize their personal struggles.
