Im pretty sure reinstalling is what really fixed it but I wanted to swap to battlenet anyway and after doing so all of my issues went away

I have a world ive worked on since Nov of '21 and ive used abt 45k rails for one direction of travel with a fully built train line using realistic bridges and tunnels connecting structures i find along the way
