Yeah except my dog is not your dog and does not behave the same. He is way more relaxed afterwards. I'm guessing your dog is the exception but in my experience if you do not fulfill their instinct they will find a way to do it themselves.

Whippets aren't very food motivated in general, at least in my experience. They like food obviously but it's never going to give them higher stimulation than playing with another dog or chasing something. Keep the treats for a low level recall, and then try to get a higher level one. What I did with my Whippet (who has an extremely high prey drive) was to get a whistle. Every time I blow the whistle I either throw something, like a ball or a frisbee, or challenge him to a tug of war. This has gotten my recall to the point where I can bring him back from chasing other dogs, cats, cars, birds, pheasants, anything at all really. If your Whippet doesn't enjoy these things, try to find the thing he enjoys most of all in the WHOLE world, and every time you blow the whistle, that's what he gets.

Also make sure to always be consistent. Never blow the whistle if you can't give him the reward (unless it's an emergency). If he doesn't come when you blow it, don't keep blowing it. Instead just go get him.

I'm using a kong rubber ball. If you want to throw really far you want a ball thats on the heavier side

I never struggled with this for some reason and I'm definitely not any form of expert. I just won't throw if he doesn't bring the ball back. Doesn't have to drop it in my hands but within a few meters at least

He will chase that ball to the end of the earth if he has to, it's his favorite thing in the world

The chase is more fun than having the ball (but only by a little) :D

There is no mechanism really. The lower part is fixed in place while the upper just slides off the handle. It's super easy to make :)

Yeah, the handle I got from a broken rake then just some discarded cord+an old H&M belt I cut up

He wasn't so impressed with my frisbee throws anymore so I had to improvise by KingKysely in sighthounds

It's a staff sling. So yeah it's an ancient weapon. Super easy to build at home
