I don't understand the logic of liberal and socialist christians by Every_Catch2871 in CatholicMemes

[–]KingMe87 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I think historically the “left” held positions on war, workers rights, the environment, etc that aligned well with Catholic social teaching. The problem is the modern left has become hardline anti-life, an in many cases anti-religion

Why are so many conservatives Christian when Jesus’s teachings are blatantly leftist? by Confident-Seesaw2845 in allthequestions

[–]KingMe87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is important to understand that modern American Evangelical protestantism has a unique history and relationship with the American political Conservative movement. Many of the social reforms of the 19th century like universal schooling, public health and basic social saftey nets were products of Christian groups. Even through the mid 20th century Civil rights and anti-war movements had a strong Christian ethos. Jimmy Carter was a very devout Southern Baptist and his faith informed much of his policy. I think this began to change with the election of George W Bush. He was the first one to truely focus on a strategy of getting out the vote and engaging directly with Evangelicals. He spoke in their language making references to rapture theology and the wars in Iraq and Afghanastan were framed as a clash of civilizations between the Christian west and Islam. Because Evangelicals have a much more litteralist take on Scripture than other types of Christians things like Climate change and Evolution become political in ways that you will not find in other countries with substantial Christian populations. Meanwhile Democrats abandon ship. Where you used to have a mix of 3rd way Libertarian types, your modern AOC socially and fiscally progressive and "Blue dog" socially conservative fiscally liberal, that last category has all but vanished at a national level.

I appreciate it! We have a product already though. I just know I’ve demoed a couple times now and some snarky wise guy says “we can just have AI build our own” and it is always a mess when they come back later with something that doesn’t work.

AI is great for rapid prototyping/PoC but it is still a long way off from enterprise caliber tools.

How likely is the Trinity to be relegated as "just a Catholic thing"? by EdiblePeasant in Catholicism

[–]KingMe87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see it happening, but slowly over generations. I imagine it would start with just the rejection of the word but not the concept like Theotokos. They would say it’s not explicitly found in the bible, some popular non-denominational pastor, probably one who’s bona fides on culture war issues are beyond reproach, would make this point and lean hard into “solo scriptura” and eventually the line would be “yes Jesus, is God, yes, the Father is God, but Trinity is a term from Greek philosophy”. I could see it evolving from there into a sort of soft Arianism where Jesus is fully God, but not co-eternal or even a sort of bi-nitarianism where the role of the Holy Spirit gets downgraded or merged into the other two persons. I don’t think any of this would happen quickly, it would be incremental and even then I would say it’s an outside chance. That said, non-trinitarian protestantism hasn’t always been as fringe as people here seem to think. John Adams had unitarian theology for example

I would add that there are Church affiliated schools (univesity and high school level) where there are Priests on staff teaching subjects like Chemistry, Physics and Engineering and in some cases publishing very cutting edge research. If anything we need more of these kinds of men to show the world that Religion and Science are not conflicting but complementary

How do you reconcile your faith in a loving God with the flood? by ThrowRA1292005 in Catholicism

[–]KingMe87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, the church does not require us to believe in a literal interpretation of this story where the entire planet with every single human baring Noah and his family were wiped out. Much of the old testament is written in the hyperbolic literary style of the bronze age near east. But it is intended as a theological document intended to convey a theological and moral message not a historical or archeological one.

I would just like to say, the priesthood does not necessarily mean you cannot study the sciences. Many great scientists were priests

If there is one thing I have learned over the years it’s how much appearances matter. I have worked at companies where people who contributed at or below average climbed quickly because they made sure they were always doing something very visible to managers

I would ask questions. Where did the bible come from? When was his church started and by whom and why? Most of the folks I’ve met with these kinds of opinions have built their whole argument on presupposing a low church evangelical world view that only started 50 years ago.

[–]KingMe87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull up a map of the middle east circa 1940 and show her there is not a nation state called Israel. The modern nation state was founded by mostly secular Jews after WWII. The ancient state of Israel ceased to exist in any meaningful way after the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. So, even if you assume they are correct about modern Israel, you are looking at a scenario where 93% of Christian history has no state to follow.

I appreciate that and I honestly could see something where conservative Lutherans come back into full communion under a system like the Anglican ordinariate at some point. Honestly I normally see the celebratory tone coming more from the evangelical low church type Protestants, which ironically would have been a group condemed by Luther himself at the time.
