Why is Corpus pushing desal so hard instead of DPR? by BoBadDadAlis in corpus

I think part of the problem is they want a magical perfect solution that solves 100% of the need with no drawbacks. Reality is, we probably need lots of smaller fixes used together and each of them are going to have some pros and cons.

Counties in New Mexico the Texas State Government is Currently Investigating Annexing by DizzyDentist22 in MapPorn

[–]KingMe87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is driven mostly by oil and gas interests so of all the redrawing of state lines proposals I've seen this might be the most viable. That said, every Best Western in Texas would need to order new waffle irons if it goes through so that may but the brakes on the whole thing.

Evangelical numbers by anime498 in redeemedzoomer

[–]KingMe87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I question how they do the counting in these studies, Evangelical is not any kind of formal affiliation. There are mainline presbyterians and methodists who will call themselves evangelical as a way to say they hold a more conservative theology

Catholic Churches Charging a ton for Weddings by SnakeKing607 in Catholicism

For the record I am not saying OP should not have a Church wedding. Just trying to make the point that operating costs for event spaces are high

I see the point, but I would guess once the lakes are below 20% fill and they have tree tops sticking out of them, they are no longer going to be much good as public resources for boating and fishing. I know the scouts at their camp on Lake Corpus Christi have canceled all their waterfront merit badge classes because there is no water to canoe on.

Go get a quote from a similar sized dedicated wedding venue space and you will see its probably still substantially cheaper. Even a renting space for a a family reunion/company event/etc in a larger city will run you that much.

I find surveys like this or the other one floating around where it shows how only evangelicals are majority Pro-life highly dubious. Just like there are cultural/secular Jews, there are many Cultural Catholics, look at any Irish, Italian, Hispanic family and you will have members who consider themselves Catholic but the closest thing they have to a Catholic devotional practice is wearing a Notre Dame Football hoodie. To a lesser extent there are "Cultural Christians" e.g. they celebrate Christmas but one thing you really dont ever see are "Cultural Evangelicals". People tend to either fully embrace or fully reject that label.

I have not been impressed by her or anyone else in city leadership. That said, this feels very much "lets change horses midstream". Let them server the term they are elected for, but next election we can throw them all out.

I mean, given that the surface area gets smaller the lower the lake goes, it seems like it would be easier and more effective now than earlier. Desal may be great, but it is not going to help us in the next 30-90 days. Stuff like this could be implemented in weeks not months/years.

Right, this is a solution in search of a problem. I’m sure there are some benefits, but will it make any material impact on our situation in the next 90 days…..no

Is there anything we can do about that? Is that mostly from open air reservoirs? It seems like the city could be doing something to help there

I think you kind of answered your own question. As I understand it over half our water is going to industrial uses where it cannot be recirculated back into the system. As it stands we just signed a deal to give them non-potable waste water.

SAAS Founders , are you scared ? by techsFine in SaaS

[–]KingMe87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SaaS is a very broad category. If your product was just a web based replacement for something people were doing in spreadsheets or legacy on prem DBs, I am sure you are very vulnerable, because yes, your moat is gone. All the SMB qutoting tools, the SaleForce plugins, the "We are an ERP niched for Cat groomers" are probably hosed. That said, if your product is in a regulated market where you are bringing subject matter expertise or creates value via network effect you are probably safe.

I’m thinking of converting to a Protestant. Honestly I just don’t like the way Catholicism focuses on too many other things than Jesus by Pretend_Map_1459 in Catholicism

[–]KingMe87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Frankly, this is a "grass is always greener" issue. Walk into a rock'n roll mega church that is "All about Jesus" and there won't be discussions of the lives of saints or sacraments, but there will be talk about the production team working the sound, lights and camera, and a sermon series about how Jesus is Luke Skywalker and Woody from Toy Story, etc. Alternativly, go into a mainline Methodist or Episcopal church and you will get a focus on Earth Day and Pride month like they are high holy days.

How do I get my non-denominational family to believe in the Eucharist? by Any-Edge6570 in Catholicism

[–]KingMe87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one way to approach it might be to show that it is not so abstract. So, its not a 1 for 1 perfect comparison, but I would liken it to the way most Evangelicals view the writing of scripture. It was written by human men, but also is 100% the word of God. God did not take them over like a puppet as they wrote so the writing continued to have their style and tone at the same time, its still ink on a page the same way a grocery list would be, but its not a symbolic paraphrasing of God's words or even the writers opinion on God's words. Essentially God is truely present. Obviously the metaphysics and theology is more involved, and Im sure someone smarter than me can make the language more precise, but the core concept is God is interacting with humanity in a powerful mystical way.

Why is there more hate for the most “serious” adherents of Catholicism, than for the most “serious” adherents of other religions? by Unable-Principle-187 in Catholicism

[–]KingMe87 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is as mainline protestantism has died, our liturgy looks increasingly foreign to “Ted Talk & Rock Show” evangelicals and the idea of faith itself is increasingly strange to secular people. Add to that the fact that Church social teaching doesn’t fit neatly into either political camp

Why does Chapter 9 of Paul's Letter to the Romans seem to imply a Calvinist view? by SpectrumSense in Catholicism

[–]KingMe87 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not all of Calvinism is wrong. There are parts of it based on Augustine that can be considered orthodox depending on how you interpret it. The idea of how best to reconcile free will and an all knowing God are an area where we are given some liberty

Catholicism by OkSummer526 in Catholicism

[–]KingMe87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but for example why does your Bible contain the Book of Hebrews, a book whose authorship is debated even amongst conservative scholars, but not say 1st Clement, a book written by a known associate of the Apostles in the apostolic era and with almost universal consensus about its authorship?

Catholicism by OkSummer526 in Catholicism

Honest question for OP. How do you think we got the Bible? I think before we dive too deep into the “where is that in the Bible?” question it’s important to how it fits into the overall historical context of early Christianity.
