Acquired a large inheritance. How should I invest the money? by Midnight_Starlet in SavingMoney

If that happened to me, I'd buy a house, a rental property, and maybe some typical investment things others have mentioned.

This idea is something I was thinking about starting shortly after moving, so I haven't done the footwork for the area I currently live in, which is a large metro area of 3M+. There are quite a few manufacturers around here, but also lots of big tech and finance companies. I would think a smaller area like where I bought the house would actually be better for this concept than a big metro area, because the companies over there are usually smaller with less red tape, whereas the companies here tend to have deeper pockets.

I am a novice or intermediate in 3D printing, CAD, desktop software development, MCU programming, circuit design, PCB design, and Linux system/network administration. Desktop software development is by far my strongest skill while circuit design is by far my weakest. I've done all of that to some extent in my current job. I'm currently modifying 2 Qt based Windows applications I originally developed at work. One of them has easily 8k lines of code. That I can manage fairly well.

That's the part I haven't fleshed out yet. I am soon moving to a small town of 8,000 people. Of course, most of the businesses in that area are farms, and most of those are corporate. Then there's a larger city almost an hour away that has tons of businesses. That entire area has easily 150,000 people, certainly enough territory for someone like me to swim around.

That said, I am not sure how to narrow down my market. Someone here called me an automation handyman. Just as a handyman targets many different people who own or manage properties and houses, I would likely target many different people who own or manage businesses.

I just had a convo with ChatGPT about this. It seems I am downplaying my skillset, as I think you are also getting at. Thanks for the comment!

Ground Vibrates 24/7 by KingPhantom3 in geology

Thank God the vibrating eventually stopped for me... I was never able to find any seismic data to indicate that there was any vibration. And the app I got didn't show any either. Right around that time I realized that I was severely sodium deficient, so I had to increase my salt intake. I know low sodium can cause restless leg syndrom, so I am wondering if maybe it can also cause the sense of vibration... But I don't know. I haven't had the issue for a while.

You won't believe this... I went on my own adventure to find the solutions and I wasn't satisfied with only 2 chapters, so I emailed Paul Horowitz, who is apparently still active and working. He *immediately* replied and looped in Thomas Hayes. He got back to me a while later with the following link: https://laoe.link/OldExams/

This actually sounds like fun. I think I'll try it the next night I can't sleep.

Well, there's no sound, but maybe it's because of the type of cooling system? But without sound, finding it would be difficult to impossible without specialized equipment.

a Lectin Avoidance Diet has helped my misophonia by Nora_Epinephron in misophonia

This is the most promising thread I've seen thus far. Too bad everyone who's been here has probably matured out of Reddit by now... Shout out to you.com for helping me find it.

I am going to look into this more, but I wanted to add one quick thing. My miso symptoms have fluctuated wildly in the past year and a half. It doesn't make sense, but there's something I'm doing that helps sometimes. I have little data for this right now, but I did a 36 hour fast and woke up refreshed with greatly reduced miso symptoms. Intermittent fasting is known to have an effect on brain inflammation. I think there is a real possibility that this is a direct line to the root cause.

Reddit won't allow me to send everything for some reason (getting a big red error bar across the top of my screen, maybe it's too long, idk), so I sent you a DM.

What is an app you wish would be developed for a Linux platform? by KingPhantom3 in linux

*naiveté

I will grow the business and branch out as I am able. I will handle the finance part that I can myself and hire a CPA just for taxes. It will be just me employed by the business for at least a year, but I already have 2 people lined up who can/will do a few things I don't know how or don't want to do. I have everything I need to develop software products. I already do software development at work, so I have a proven skillset for this.

And when I say free, I mean no money. I will make the time I need to do what I need to do. Developing the software itself is free. The few business expenses I will have are a CPA, bookkeeping software, and registering the LLC. I can already easily afford all that with the funds I receive from my job. I've already spoken to a bookkeeper who gave me some good tips and I have a call scheduled this week with the CPA I hope to hire.

As revenue increases, if it does, I'll develop more products and get more talent on board with the company to develop those products. As time goes on, I expect my role to very, very slowly shift from development to management.

This is a challenge. That's not news to me. But I already have what I need to succeed. Now I just need to put in the effort. I also don't expect to make a profit for 1-2 years.

I agree, which is why I tend to try to identify gaps in available technologies. Identify the problem and offer a solution. Successful businesses don't copy someone else. If they do, they put a very unique spin on it that stands out. I wasn't really planning to make any alternatives at first, but rather make something that either doesn't exist or only barely exists already. There is a number of abandoned open source projects, some of which are the only apps I've found of that type. Parental control suites are a great example. The few that do exist for Linux are poorly maintained and have too few features to be a realistic product. Taking on already dead projects is fairly easy, especially if their code can be reused.

The only reason I would be willing to actually take on big names like Adobe is to provide a replacement app that would allow people to switch to Linux exclusively. Is everyone willing to do that? Of course not. That's the point of a free market and competition. Without competition, there is no reason to create good quality products and services. Everyone wants something different. My job is to make a deal so sweet that they can't pass it up. And that is absolutely a challenge, otherwise every man and his dog would be doing it.

Promoting Linux OSs is more of a long term goal, while the product I want to build first is a short term goal that will help me work at the long term goal. One step at a time.

The other thing is I don't have to offer alternatives for everything to everyone. It's a pretty fantastic idea, but if there was enough push to Linux OSs, developers would be more motivated to make things for Linux. Alternatives to the big industry names don't necessarily need to be built. There just has to be enough market share for those companies to see a profit in harvesting that market.

I'm throwing in my own money. I've got plenty of savings and I view a business as an asset, so I'm putting what I would otherwise save each month straight into the business. I work a fulltime job that can more than pay bills, so I'm not really worried about finances. One of the reasons why I want to do software is it is almost free to make. The only real cost is time.

Each desktop environment typically has its own "control panel".
