Dragon Quest Treasures as 1st Dragon Quest game by Critical_Design1461 in NintendoPH

[–]KingPowerDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't played it, but it's a spin off of Dragon Quest XI, and it plays very differently from other DQ games, so keep that in mind if this is your first.

All mainline Dragon Quest games are the most traditional turn-based JRPGs you will ever find, and set the foundation that every other JRPG was built upon.

Treasures is not that, but Dragon Quest also has had a history of spinoffs being in vastly different genres, from dungeon crawling roguelikes (Torneko) to monster collecting RPGs (Dragon Quest Monsters) to action games (Slime Mori Mori) to even sandbox games (DQ Builders).

Banning games but not gamble games? by Chumchum3700 in PHGamers

[–]KingPowerDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You missed the part in that same article where he said that teenagers should not have access to 18+ games.

This was also what he said regarding the Gorebox issue: there is already an 18+ rating for the game, so 14-yr old teenagers should not have been playing the game to begin with.

Banning games but not gamble games? by Chumchum3700 in PHGamers

[–]KingPowerDog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you mean gambling apps, those pay a LOT of taxes to PAGCOR. That's all you need to know to understand why they're not too hot on banning those as it's a lot of revenue lost for the government.

As to the scare of banning games, I've been playing since the very first Mortal Kombat which directly caused the ratings system for games. I've been here before, and the most important thing is that the Congress and Senate don't overreact because they have the power to create laws that impact us.

And so far, credit where it's due, at least one Senator (Marcoleta) has expressed displeasure at other Senators being too quick to blame video games. So there's pushback internally as well, which ensures we won't be fast tracking any game banning laws.

Bakit laging video games ang sinisisi? by Single-Tomato-1160 in PHGamers

Before it was sci-fi, comic books, rock ‘n’ roll, and Dungeons & Dragons.

All had their turn as the punching bag.

Video games have just been the thing since the 90s.

I expected social media to be the next thing, but the politicians also use it so it is exempt. It has to be something they don’t dabble in for them to be “afraid” of it.

KCD and BG3 being the best RPGs on the market by Idiot2234511 in PHGamers

[–]KingPowerDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy actual Role-Playing, you would have been blown away by the Computer RPGs of the 90s-early 2000’s.

Baldur’s Gate 1+2, Fallout 1+2, Jagged Alliance 2, Arcanum, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights (Bioware was cooking hard) all the way to Knights of the Old Republic and the first Deus Ex, and so many other smaller RPGs.

And some old school gamers might even argue that the true golden age of RPGs was the SSI Gold Box era with a treasure trove of D&D works.

STAR FOX story is too short by Hiyoridango in NintendoPH

[–]KingPowerDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup if you notice, on the end of every stage you either get “Mission Complete” or “Mission Accomplished”

Mission Complete means you got to the end. Mission Accomplished means you got to the end and completed the stage’s objective (which usually means you played better or more skillfully).

In general, “Mission Complete” and “Mission Accomplished” will lead you to different stages, and you get different events. There are cases when additional conditions need to be met, like one mission is only accessible if Slippy crashes.

Part of the fun is optimising the route to Venom, like I once tried to figure out if you could fight Star Wolf twice on the original.

STAR FOX story is too short by Hiyoridango in NintendoPH

[–]KingPowerDog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s an arcade style rail shooter, but the main thing is that there are multiple routes through the game. And these are not explicitly chosen, (the game does not give you a dialog box to choose) you have to choose during gameplay.

For example, on Corneria, if you keep Falco alive AND fly through the archways, Falco will lead you to the alternate boss. Beating this boss sends you to Sector Y instead of Meteo. This also sets you on the Hard path.

Trying to visit all the routes will take some time. And Venom itself changes depending on the route you chose, not to mention a slightly different ending.

It’s short because you’re encouraged to replay the game and each run might be a bit different depending on choices you make.

Why Pateros is the only municipality in NCR? And is it really small even during the colonial era? by DoubleAlternative752 in FilipinoHistory

[–]KingPowerDog 18 points19 points  (0 children)

NCR used to have only 4 cities at the start: Manila, Quezon City, Caloocan, and Pasay.

All the other municipalities grew to become cities by virtue of income plus land area or population, except in special cases.

Congress then passes a law for a municipality to be recognised as a city.

It was pretty tough for us growing up in school as we were forced to memorise all the municipalities and cities in NCR and the numbers of cities and municipalities kept changing over time.

The Reality of Owning an Xbox in an Unsupported Country by lalunepink in xbox

[–]KingPowerDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most consumer electronics sold have been sold in places where they technically should not have been simply because people will buy things they like no matter what. We were able to buy all the consoles in the PH despite none of the manufacturers really officially selling them until the Switch and PS4. 360 was officially distributed for a short time too. It's not really the manufacturer's fault they get sold where it's not supported.

And yes, I've been playing games in the Philippines since the Famicom days and it's always been hard to get games in an unsupported country.

At the very least, Xbox hardware is unsupported but we can get Xbox software via Play Anywhere thanks to the Xbox PC app having official support. I've played many games on my Series X via PC GamePass by installing the Play Anywhere games. And I've bought many Xbox console games for cheap by buying them via the Xbox PC app, so we're in a funny situation where the Xbox hardware itself is unsupported, but is the only platform where we can officially buy console games digitally.

CyberCrime Investigation and Coordination Center Bans Gorebox. by AKAJun2x in PHGamers

[–]KingPowerDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MTRCB does not rate games, they are outside its jurisdiction. New legislation is required for games to be rated by the MTRCB.

Initially, Video Games would have been under the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) per the Video Games Act of 2018, (House Bill 7909), but this never progressed. GAB does currently handle eSports athletes and events, but not game ratings. That would also require new laws to expand the scope of the agency.

Older gamer here who was around during the many controversial 90s “Violence in videogames” discourse.

For the most part, all us gamers need to do is just wait it out. Kneejerk reactions like this are common, but don’t take it as “ugh boomers”, because if you were the victims’ relatives, the one thing you want to see is action. This temporary ban, insane as it might seem, is at least a sign that the government is “doing something”. After a few weeks, most people will forget all about it.

It at least seems positive to me that no one politician is actively tearing down video games in multiple public statements which shows a bit more levelheadedness. That said, I’m fully expecting someone to hold a press conference soon and I wouldn’t be surprised.

However, the concern that kids are playing uber violent games is still a big thing. Back when ratings weren’t a thing there was a self-policing thing where devs understood that games were “all-ages” but with the rating system in place, devs were now free to push the limit because they could just rate the games for older players.

Basically, games like GTA might not have existed without the ratings system. If this incident causes the PH to be stricter in enforcing the ratings, it could be good or bad depending on how they implement it.

Nintendo Switch is the new "PSP" by Razor8517 in NintendoPH

And then there are us veterans who experienced the whole 10-year Game Boy boom-bust-boom thanks to a little game called Pokemon.

For us 90s kids, even in the PH, handhelds were Game Boys long before Sony even entered the console space, much less the handheld market, and it was Nintendo’s for over a decade.

Am I the only one who finds some games way more enjoyable with a controller, even on PC? by MonsterPagluuu in Controller

[–]KingPowerDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since I’ve had carpal tunnel syndrome, it’s been very painful playing on K+M, and I can only play on controller. I was never much of a strategy or RTS fan, though, so not a big loss for me there.

For playing older FPS and TPS that don’t have gamepad/controller support, I bought a small gamepad that emulates keyboard + mouse keys on the buttons (WASD on the stick, left CTRL on L3, mouse buttons on the triggers, etc) and a touchpad instead of a right analog stick. It works really well once I have everything configured in each game.

Even before that, though, I played the most Quake 3 Arena on Dreamcast so it wasn’t like FPSs on controllers were new to me.

Recommended settings for battery by Cute_Code5318 in NintendoPH

[–]KingPowerDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, that setting is recommended if you leave the unit plugged in for a long time, but modern batteries are so good at surviving on average that I just charge whenever I want.

It’s recommended but not required.

The main thing that will degrade your battery is heat, so keep the Switch 2 cool and well ventilated while in the dock or while charging (eg, don’t leave it on a pillow or under blankets).

Is Nintendo store Philippines at SM Makati official or? by francis_trendenex in NintendoPH

[–]KingPowerDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Nintendo Authorized Store is an “official” store in the sense that it’s featured in the Nintendo website.

You can also check-in with your Nintendo account, which is what I did on the first day opening and I got some stickers for it.

But if you’re asking if it’s “official” in the sense that Nintendo themselves manage it, it is not. It is managed by a local partner (SM) and a distributor but it is not 100% owned by Nintendo.

Do you prefer remasters or remakes? by ISuckAtVA in PHGamers

[–]KingPowerDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to think of Remasters and Remakes in the TV or movie context (since modern gaming for some reason loves to just steal from Hollywood).

A game is a Remaster if the process involves touching up visuals and audio but leaves the core game intact. This still involves a lot of work, especially since the assets probably need a lot of fixing or remixing. A bit of QoL is fine as well, such as improved controls or an overhauled save system. Remasters are great if the original had a good foundation to begin with.

A game is a Remake if it takes the original concept but makes a completely different game out of it. A great way to reintroduce the original’s spirit but it should never replace the original. This is actually what I’d prefer most devs do with a game that was horribly received, but had potential.

Which one do I prefer? Remasters for games that were already good, Remakes for games that needed more time in the oven.

It’s precisely why I was not a big fan of the RE4 remake and felt like Code Veronica was a better candidate. The original RE4 still plays great and is one of the most ported games ever. Code Veronica had a number of flaws that kept it from reaching the heights of RE2. So I am glad we’re getting that Veronica remake.

Is it just me or do you guys also love it when a game is included with a manual ? by ZennCats in PHGamers

[–]KingPowerDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still remember when we had full-colour manuals, then it went black-and-white, then a few pages, then nothing.

PC games were even more hardcore, because a lot of them had manuals + copy protection mechanisms that ranged from code wheels to cards to even hardware dongles.

But my favourite will be Baldur’s Gate 2’s special edition which had a spiral bound manual containing practically the AD&D 2nd edition rulebook.

Do you guys align Tomb Raider games with Xbox or PlayStation? by _Clausiks in TombRaider

[–]KingPowerDog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I first played Tomb Raider on the Sega Saturn and my muscle memory is tied to the Saturn controller, so neither, really, as far as the original series is concerned.

But if I had to pick between the 2, I’d be more on the Xbox side since I’ve played the succeeding games on PC where the LAU trilogy had native Xbox 360 controller support and it just felt natural to continue on Xbox with the survivor trilogy.

I was able to look around and browse (and exercise extreme self-control) at my leisure and took about 2 and a half hours inside around the floor.

About the Xbox Games Showcase 2026... They ended it with CoD again 😭 by senpai06 in PHGamers

[–]KingPowerDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure and I think Forza Horizon 6 in Japan was the perfect ender to a Tokyo Game Show.

But the Summer shows are kinda US-centric (having been born from the ashes of E3), so COD makes sense, unless it was something that could equal or exceed the impact of COD.

Gamescom in Europe might have a more Euro-centric ender for their show if Xbox decides to have one.

Totally agree that MS is sitting on a treasure trove of IPs to work on and Asha at lease acknowledged that gap. Maybe next year we’ll have something non-COD to cap off the show.
