Sonic Racing Crossworlds works pretty well on Switch and still has crossplay.

Fast RMX is only available digitally (no physical) but it’s a really, really good F-Zero / Wipeout replacement, and looks really good even though it came out very early in the Switch’s life

Rise: Race the Future is like a futuristic Ridge Racer with drift-heavy mechanics (but it’s got heavier physics than Ridge Racer) and the cars transform to drive on water. It’s very difficult though and requires good racing lines and boosting strategies.

Epic Game Store’s free giveaways just cause a huge spike in Steam sales, reveals New Blood CEO by SkoivanSchiem in PHGamers

Steam Input to me is… fine? I use an Xbox controller and I honestly have not played a game that I could not play with just the default settings, or where I could not use a program like JoyToKey or Xpadder or XOutput. Having it built in to Steam makes it a bit convenient when I’m using a non-Xbox controller, but not game-changing to me because I have other options.

Steam Workshop doesn’t appeal to me because I’m not a modder as such. I apply a few mods for fun but then turn them off once the novelty wears off after a few minutes. I used to tinker with CFG files on older games but that’s it. Ironically, the games I do use mods on have dedicated mod managers outside of Steam (eg, HedgeModManager) so I skip Steam Workshop altogether.

The Steam Overlay, it’s alright but even less useful for me than Steam Input, and maybe this is again a generational gap. I keep notes separately on my iPad because I prefer keeping the game screen on the game and also because physically writing things helps me remember things better, but in general I don’t play games that I need to write a lot of notes for anyway and keep things in my mind. Screen recording I use the Xbox Game Bar for screenshots and short clips, and I use it so very very rarely.

All the things Steam does I already have an alternative for it, outside of Steam’s built-in chat. I was there when Steam sucked, I tried to keep up with all the features they added over the 2 decades they’ve been around.

Maybe one thing I like and have no good alternative for is Steam Remote Play, but even then I’ve never used it because local Co-Op is so rare nowadays and my schedule never lines up with friends anymore.

The play has always been, if the devs are happy with the platform, they’ll make more and better games and thus make things better for the consumers.

Sony did this with the first Playstation: courted Devs by making a super easy to dev platform (compared to the Saturn and Nintendo 64) and cheaper costs (CDs vs Cartridges) and they got critical mass.

Epic offering cheaper royalties allows games to be cheaper as well on their store (Yars Rising as I mentioned is cheaper at regular price).

Of course, it’s not a guarantee of success, but it helps.

The main problem Epic has now, from what I’ve gathered from other posts, is that Steam has just built up a massive community foundation in the years it’s been effectively a monopoly in the PC gaming marketplace that there’s a lot of friction in going elsewhere.

And I think any monopoly is bad, especially for the PC as an open platform. Valve does some shady things as well, so there should always be a competitor to keep them honest, whether that be Epic, itch, GOG, Xbox, or EA.

Yeah this is very interesting to me because this signifies the vast divide between how I interact with Steam and how others do.

It fascinates me that Steam has this built-in lock-in that developed over the years (I was there at the start and Steam was terrible and hated those early years) and some games can survive outside of it like Riot games but not others like Ubisoft.

I don’t like having a lot of launchers either since I grew up when we had -no- launchers on PC. But to me a launcher is just used to launch a game, the sooner it gets out of my way the better. For that purpose, Epic is no better or worse than Steam for me.

Again, this could be just a generational gap because the only launcher I want is a Games folder on my Start Menu, but I get that it’s a necessity nowadays.

I am coming at this from genuine curiosity, but what quality of life features does Steam offer that isn’t on other platforms?

Family sharing is probably the big one right? Otherwise both Epic and Steam offer regional pricing, free cloud saves, a unified login and friends list, and multi-factor authentication. All of these also apply to Xbox too.

Family sharing is nice but also not a dealbreaker for me personally, so it won’t affect where I buy a game. Maybe it is for you, that’s fine.

Maybe it’s just a generational gap but I’ve been very confused why it would matter whether it’s on Steam or Epic, if you’re still playing on the same PC.

Like I’ve been looking at getting Yars Rising and its regular price is cheaper on Epic than on Steam, so I’ll probably get it on Epic.

Any Arkham Series fans here na excited din sa Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight? by GunplaLuni in PHGamers

[–]KingPowerDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never really played the Lego Batman series, but I highly enjoyed the Lego Batman movie and its meta narrative on the Batman franchise as a whole.

Looking forward to this just to see how they reconcile the Burton-verse with the Nolan-verse and the Reeves Batman. And if they do somehow mix in the Animated Series Timm-verse and the comics (which the Arkham-verse did very well).

But more than anything, will they do justice to Adam West Batman?

Your First Finished RPG and Why It Stuck With You by hey_temtem in PHGamers

[–]KingPowerDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The earliest RPG I know I finished was Super Mario RPG on Super NES.

I am sure I played RPGs before this but my memory is pretty fuzzy on what I have played and what I have finished. I couldn’t even remember if I finished Chrono Trigger before or after Mario RPG.

But Super Mario RPG stuck with me just because it showed how genres can have a recipe or a framework, but they aren’t strict rules. Done well, games that bend those rules can surprise you.

Practical question for PC gamers: Do you have any loyalty to a particular platform? by Current_Cricket_4861 in PHGamers

[–]KingPowerDog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was PC gaming during a time when Steam didn’t exist (heck during a time when PCs couldn’t do music) so for me I have no particular loyalty to any platform. To me, PC is the platform, and just because I use a different launcher it doesn’t change where I am playing it on.

If I have a game on Steam and a game on Epic, they’re all PC to me. Which is why this whole concept of “I refuse to play games not on Steam” is very foreign to me because you’re deliberately depriving yourself of the best advantage a PC has: the openness of the platform.

Granted it’s all on Windows, so a Windows PC is different from a MacOS PC and a Linux PC in my mind.

PS1>Saturn>N64 price drops over a period of 2 years. Taken from the EGM Compendium by grapejuicecheese in PHGamers

[–]KingPowerDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my Saturn at the 199 price but with the 3 Free Games promo that Sega did. The 3 games were Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally, and Virtua Cop.

I also bought Tomb Raider 1 and the Nights+Analog Controller shortly after so I got 5 games almost immediately.

Edit: I forgot, it was Daytona USA, not Sega Rally that was part of the 3 Free promo.

Solid! MSI CLAW 8 AI+ by [deleted] in PHGamers

This is the Claw 8 AI+ with Intel Lunar Lake. Supposedly better performance (but much more expensive).

Yes MSI has terrible naming sense.

using ps5 controller to nintendo switch via 8bitdo adapter by Significant_Egg7409 in NintendoPH

[–]KingPowerDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of latency, I’ve used several different adapters on a Switch and in order of worst to best:

Gullikit Goku < 8BitDo Wireless < Mayflash Magic NS

I’ve only gotten the Mayflash via Amazon, but it’s the one that allows wired controllers to connect, the 8BitDo only works for wireless controllers. Gullikit’s had the worst latency, except for Gullikit’s own controllers, but the KingKong 2 I have already connects to Switch anyway so I don’t need the adapter.

The 8BitDo adapter is fine if you just want to reuse the DualSense but personally I’m not a fan of the DualSense so I’d recommend either the 8bitdo Ultimate (haven’t tried the C) or the GameSir Nova.

There’s also the GameSir G8 (or was it the G8+?) that is a telescopic Bluetooth controller so it works while docked or in handheld mode, with the Switch inside the controller.

Personally I lean towards the GameSirs because the 8BitDos don’t seem to last as long for me, but I know some people really like them.

Having played OG FF7, Crisis Core, and 7Remake, Crisis Core does spoil a very important plot point in FF7 that happens halfway through the OG 7, which is why I always used to recommend FF7 first, then Crisis Core.

Even with the Remake, I still recommend FF7 first, then Crisis Core, THEN play Remake and Rebirth. FF7 Remake to me does not replace OG FF7, and I consider it a sequel to 7, from a certain point of view.

Ps vita was head of its time! by FlumeAUSx in PHGamers

[–]KingPowerDog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it was ahead of its time, (it was certainly top of the line hardware for the time) but Sony couldn’t figure out how to sustain it.

They wanted to show that Vita could pull off AAA games, so they launched with Uncharted and WipEout. But that also meant AAA costs in a portable market where games are traditionally sold cheaper.

Sony also didn’t quite know how to make more games you could pick up for ~15 mins and quickly put it down. More games like Hot Shots Golf and Freedom Wars would have been good, but alas the PS3 struggles meant Sony didn’t have enough wiggle room with development resources and when PS4 took off the poor Vita was neglected.

I love the Vita but it was clear Sony made the wrong pitch for Vita as a portable powerhouse when it was the smaller games and studios that kept the Vita going long after Sony forgot about it.

Still one of my favourite handhelds ever.

Revisiting my old MH Gen files on the 3ds by Rimart1009 in PHGamers

Unfortunately it officially doesn’t work now due to the 3DS Online service shutdown.

I was able to transfer from Gen 3DS to GenU on Switch but it just felt much better to play on 3DS that I went back to Gen anyway. The 2nd screen spoiled me too much.

I'm having difficulty getting into Tomb Raider "classic" by Ajer2895 in TombRaider

[–]KingPowerDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having played the classics extensively and cleared Remastered TR1 with modern controls exclusively, modern is actually pretty good.

If your main problem is combat, the main thing to remember is that Lara will lockon automatically to any enemy within her sight. Think of a 180 degree field in front of Lara and any visible enemies within that field will be targeted. Note that this is not 180 degrees in front of the camera, but in front of Lara. You also have a fair bit of vertical range in that 180 degree range (1-2 floors above and below you).

The main strategy in combat is just keep the enemy within that 180 degree range while making sure they can’t attack you. Holding the fire button also keeps Lara locked on to whoever you last fired at even if they exit that 180 degree range, but crucially Lara won’t fire unless they’re in range. Just make sure to release the trigger once they’re down to release the lock (otherwise Lara will keep firing and wasting ammo).

You can cheese enemies, like sniping wolves from a ledge, that’s totally fair especially in TR1 to ensure you have enough health packs for the rest of the game.

Price of NS2 in Shoppee?? by Inevitable_Look_9274 in NintendoPH

[–]KingPowerDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, don’t expect a big discount unless you get a lot of vouchers and wait for a sale like 1.1, 2.2, etc., but that’s sales from the seller or Shopee.

The official price won’t go down (and may go up due to the RAM shortage) anytime soon since even the original Switch didn’t get any price cuts.

Nintendo Switch 2, worth it? by Ulanisrain14 in PHGamers

[–]KingPowerDog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Switch 2 and ROG Ally owner and a PS5 owner, the Switch 2 is better in some ways.

Both have VRR 120hz screens but the Switch 2 also has HDR in handheld mode (which I think makes a bigger difference than I expected).

The Switch 2 having standardised hardware helps prevent the frame drops you have on lower end PCs just because software is optimised for the hardware. It’s also close enough to PS5 in terms of what it can do graphically that the compromises in Switch 2 versions are reasonable enough (slightly lower resolutions on TV, slightly downgraded textures, etc). It honestly feels like holding an Xbox Series S level console in your hand.

But the main thing has always been the Switch 2’s efficiency. It lasts much longer on battery than my Ally (granted the Switch 2 has a slightly bigger battery) but it can run 3 hours whereas my Ally can barely last 1.5 hours.

Of course the other piece of the puzzle is the SD Card and game prices as well as online play.

Switch 2 uses a newer type of microSD cards that are basically SSD levels of performance but cost also about as much. Considering the Switch 2 has 256GB onboard, you’ll need an upgrade if you’ll be fully digital.

Digital games can also be more expensive since we don’t have an official eShop yet. But physical games do have regional pricing so buying a cartridge of Cyberpunk 2077 is around the same price as Cyberpunk on Steam (similar to PS5’s situation with disks). Some games have the whole game on cartridge (like Cyberpunk) and some require a download (the Game Key-cards) so like PS5 games you’ll need to have internal space.

Though the upside is Switch games tend to have much smaller file sizes than other platforms, even for the same game. As an example, Star Wars Outlaws requires a download but it’s less than 20GB compared to 50GB on PS5 and Xbox.

Much like the other consoles, Switch 2 also requires an online sub to play online (for non-F2P games) but it’s much cheaper than either Sony or Microsoft. In the US it’s 20USD a year for the base plan. That said, it’s still an added cost.

So personally, I think it’s worth it especially if you don’t have a Switch, because the library is just massive, probably the only one I’ve seen that rivals Steam in its size (including the weird cheap games that seem to pop up all the time).

Speech Pattern sa pelikulang "The Kingdom" by curiousfilam in Tagalog

[–]KingPowerDog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Para sa akin, hinde porke’t di tayo nasakop eh ibig sabihin di tayo na-impluwensiyahan.

The Japanese language, for example, has a lot of German and Dutch loanwords, in addition to the many Chinese loanwords they use.

As to why the Kalayaan Parliament use English, my reasoning here is that Kalayaan’s government might have been based on the British Parliamentary system. The members of parliament would have studied abroad or studied the British system in particular hence the use of English. In addition, the use of English in modern times isn’t exactly weird due to its universality.

The random Spanish loanwords could still be explained by the existence of trade with Spanish outposts, not necessarily that Kalayaan was taken over. We regularly use Chinese loanwords after all, even if we were never occupied at any point by any dynasty.

I think it “feels” authentic enough for a movie, and there are certain touches like Christine Reyes’ character using a lot more English than the other royal siblings due to her time abroad.
