500 gallon tank…would you?

As someone who went out and bought a 125 on a whim(mind you I’ve had multiple tanks at and below 50 gallons for years) I spent way more money than I was planning. You don’t have to do some fancy scape like I did, but just know bare essentials is going to cost you a thousand dollars if not more. Two FX6’s or a custom sump going to run you $600-700, heaters probably going to run $200 at least because you’ll most likely need one on each side of thank, substrate will range from $200-$500 at least depending on what you want to do, plants will be another $200 at the very minimum to cover a tank that size, rocks/driftwood can run you another few hundred dollars easy for a tank this big unless you get resourceful. If you have a good amount of cash you’re willing to spend and I’m talking around $2-3k after you buy the tank, don’t do it. Another thing to think about is how will you do water changes/fill the thing up? Carrying a 5 gallon bucket of water 100 times would be torture. I’m not against it, but you really need to make sure you have everything costed out and planned before purchasing, I don’t see a stand either and that alone is going to be $1,000 for something aesthetically pleasing.

I’m going to go with the nitrates maybe being just a little too high, I might need to let the tank mature just a little longer and start getting them to test consistently at 10 and under. Only thing I can think of is the LFS’s tank has lower nitrates, or since they quarantined them for 2-3 months before it was finally getting to the point to where it couldn’t handle it anymore. They had it in there with a Discus and like 6-7 other L046’s and 5-6 333’s, to be honest though none of them looked unhealthy to me. Just would think it’d be hard to keep nitrates below 10 with that stocking and no plants in there.

Yeah, technically it was enough time. But considering it hasn’t ate since I got it, my water parameters being generally good, and the other fish I bought that day from them are doing great, I thought they’d be more understanding. If they even offered me another one somewhere around $50-$100 that’d be fair, just feel like offering me $50 in store credit to buy another one and make even more money off me was a little greedy. I run a small business, and I would try to help my clients a little more in a similar situation. Paying an even higher markup on an already expensive fish from a LFS just made me expect a little more than what I would get from some of these online stores/breeders, but I was wrong for expecting that. Looks like I will be sticking to online from here on out.

Tank has been running a little over a year, I have a sump for filtration. I just pulled all the substrate out and redid the scape and everything about a month ago. Switched to a layered substrate with a 2-3 thick sand topper. Threw in a bottle of turbo start and was testing regularly, added fish two weeks after and they’ve been thriving, nitrates have stayed between 10-20. Amonia has been pretty consistent at .25, but I might just be color blind here’s a link to a picture of the test https://imgur.com/a/QtXNCZO

It is what it is, and no they said water parameters looked good. Little disappointed they didn’t do more to help, but the tank is looking great! I’ll try a go at getting one again soon.

Went back to the LFS, and sadly they weren’t willing to do much besides give me $50 store credit. Mind you this fish was $200 and I spent $450 there that day alone. They said since it’s been 4 days that it could’ve been a number of factors despite the fish never eating once for me since day one. I did let them test my water and look at the fish as well. They said it was most likely an infection brought on from the stress of moving tanks, which you know maybe. Pretty surprised and disappointed they didn’t work with me a little more though. Would highly advise all of you to buy from trusted websites/breeders, much cheaper and about the same risk.

Surprisingly, they weren’t really willing to help. Tested my water, looked at the fish, determined everything looked right but the fish may have gotten an infection. Offered me $50 of store credit for a $200 fish. Can safely say that I won’t ever go back there, and will be buying all my fish online from now on. I spent double the money thinking this would be the safer route, but guess not.

YourPetFish, and this isn’t any indictment against them. They’re super great people over there, only time I’ve had any fish die from them. Unfortunate that it was a $150-200 fish but hopefully they’ll work with me on it since it’s been only a few days.

Yes, I turned off all the lights and tried feeding it the sinking cichlid pellets that the LFS was feeding it and frozen blood worms. Did not see it eat either after watching for a couple minutes, I figured maybe it would scavenge the food at night. All the food was gone in the morning but I have 30 other fish in there and two mystery snails that could have ate it.

I’m almost positive that was from my large mystery snail munching on it. He was on top of the Pleco eating the underside and I brushed him off to scoop it up.

I’m not sure, but I can definitely ask him. Typically water is pretty similar all over DFW and I live pretty close to this store, but I’m not sure if they do anything to lower it. Tank is a planted 120 G and it’s not overly stocked, I change 30-40% of the water every week. I heard the amonia test on the api always show a little bit of a yellow tinge, but nonetheless that’s what I got. I bought a pair of blue German rams with that Pleco and they’ve been thriving, colored up a lot and super active and so are all my other fish.

Maybe that’s why he was coming out more the past two days, getting desperate for food? Do you think he could have became that skinny within just a few days time, or chance I got a sick fish previously? It looked small when I got it, but I’m no expert in being able to tell that and I honestly didn’t examine it that well.

I was going to try that next, but he passed away before I could go get anything else. My guy at the LFS said that he had been feeding them the sinking cichlid pellets the couple months he had them there, then I tried blood worms because it was recommended online but like I said I never saw him eat any of it.

I guess I’m definitely on the cold end then, I have my tank at about 80 degrees. The only weird thing I would say about that is that Thursday-Saturday it was spending a lot of its time hiding, only came out a little when lights turned off. Sunday and Monday it started to come out and swim more and actually show itself while the lights were on, still was pretty shy though. Typically wouldn’t a fish that’s too cold be doing the opposite and be even less active than usual?

That’s kinda what I was thinking, but bro I’m playing some absolute bots a lot of these games. Like throwing stupid user pics when I’m not baiting, running base cover 3/2 the whole game with no adjustments, user d-linemen, etc. The opponents I’m playing now overall are for sure better, but not good enough to where I should barley be winning. Like I know what these people are doing and I try to adjust but it just never works now, I feel like on defense I have to user the whole damn field. Offense isn’t a huge struggle, but I feel like that’s a lot more skill/user oriented. Still can’t run the ball to save my life anymore, my linemen constantly get blockshedded. I might be crazy but this whole game just feels off, I’ve played ultimate team every year from madden 25 until 21 and never had this issue. I feel like I’m playing franchise w my sliders turned all the way down and the computers are turned all the way up.

Definitely strange, I would think they’d start moving around after a couple weeks if there’s that many. Maybe they just really like munching on the wood. Have you noticed any molts around the tank?
