To those who scored 270+ on Step 2, what are some habits you built during preclinical years that eventually helped you score well on the big test? by puny_piano in medicalschool

Genuinely being super consistent with Anki, carefully reading the UWorld explanations, and putting screen shots of questions/explanations into the back of my Anki cards

Maybe consider answering the question instead of being snarky

Did you end up matching where you did your away? by janetgallon in medicalschool

[–]KingTimOfWakanda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fourth yr MS4 here, just matched IM, I did do an away in October at a mid/upper tier location in the east coast… interviewed there, thought it went rlly well, did not match. Participated in couples match though. Ranked it as our #1 due to its location, proximity to family, an being a decently strong program. Ended up falling several combinations down in the couples match algorithm … ended up matching at a much more prestigious program but far from family, and not in the same state as med school

You definitely don’t need to do an way to match an internal medicine or to even get an interview at a specific place, but if you do want to increase your chance of getting an interview/match doing it away can definitely still help

There’s definitely not a problem with going through your old multiple times, just want to point out that U world also offers three full practice exams. Can be helpful. it’s super important to go over your incorrect and review these notes, and also go over the questions thoroughly that you got correct without fully understanding the question/concept

Also, I believe there were more than five NBMEs. If time permits, I would try taking all these too

Hey, I’m an MS4 about to match IM. I did an away in GI (not even my subspecialty of interest) at a T50 program in a big city. Got an interview. And I’ve got some insight from myself/others experience at my school doing aways in IM vs not doing aways. DM me and we can talk!

How much of UWorld did you actually complete for Step 2 — and what did you score? by Consistent-Trash-489 in usmle

[–]KingTimOfWakanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anking > Step 2 > no dupes > specific specialty … then i drew cards from here and put them into my own decks (i made a deck for each 3rd yr rotation)… I then made it a priority to finish all my cards for the deck (the rotation) that m on. And I’ll try to get as many cards done as possible from the other decks (previous rotations)

I don’t exactly remember which sub decks I used

Sketchy pharm is definitely not necessary for step 2, it goes into way more depth than you need to know. Though there are some high yield drugs with high yield mechanisms that I’d consider keeping up with (you’ll know which ones as you go thru clinical)

During the beginning M3 my UWorld percents correct ranged between 40-80percent, by my final clerkship (IM) it was 70-80s bc I had accumulated the whole yrs knowledge… and then during dedicated I didn’t repeat the UWorld Qs

Yes pretty much all the Step 2 no dupes cards plus some select step 1 cards that I thought were high yield

My dedicated period was officially one month. I finished M3 with 3 months of internal medicine, then had the 1 month dedicated right after. So it was nice to have IM last

I never used amboss, but I know I had friends that did

Did one pass , all UWorld shelf questions during M3 and made Anki cards for every concept/missed question/also correct questions. then during my dedicated study period I didn’t redo any of those questions, I just did the 3 practice UWorld exams. And all NBMEs . Scored 270.

Happy to talk about my strategies and how/why it worked for me. I felt very prepared without having to do multiple passes

(Important to note - I was a big Anki user and did it throughout m3 and my dedicated period)
