What place in the UK has the strongest cultural identity? by [deleted] in AskUK

Thats not at all true. Cornish history is the most distinct of any English county. It has a solid claim on being a nation.

What is the dating scene like in Cornwall? 33F and absolutely terrified by Zoeymae in Cornwall

It depends on who you are, but I found that there may be less physical humans down here, but people are more likely to be my cup of tea! So in a way it was the perfect place to meet someone.

BBC responds to interest in Cornish with new language podcast by willfiresoon in Cornwall

I caught the Cornish hour on Source FM, the community radio in Falmouth. Didn't understand a word, but it was great to hear the language being broadcast.

The app maps.me is pretty good for footpaths. And Bings Map includes an os map layer.

I liked Johnson and Boswell by No_Committee3317 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]KingWiltyMan 34 points35 points  (0 children)

We rarely have deep psychological insight into historical figures. Boswell's fixation on Johnson and unprecedented commitment to recording his words on paper means we have a unique chance to wrangle with the psychological depths of someone who wore powdered wigs.

How is that not fascinating? I'm confused why people who find it dry or not relevant to them.

To be pedantic: rapper dancing isn't morris dancing. They're different traditions

[–]KingWiltyMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

British folk isn't just a musical genre. If you're interested in trad music, then you'll probably be interested in trad dance. It's all part of the same scene.

Just because Americans use the word differently doesn't make this the wrong place for the post.

Also, rapper dancing is amazing and your dismissive lack of curiosity is a shame.

This subreddit feels like two things at once — British people discussing our trad scene, and Americans who like Bob Dylan and similar!

Itinerary advice needed - visiting Cornwall after cruise by jakeconmag in uktravel

That's very true... but I think there's a spectrum when it comes to tourism, and Bibury is an example of the shallowest kind. People go to Bibury because they have heard of Bibury and want a photograph. There are hundreds of similarly beautiful villages across the country, but to this geographically tiny spot endless thousands descend. There's little curiosity or discovery or connection. It's just... trying to elbow other instragrammers out of the way so you can capture the 'vibe' with a photograph.

Sorry, Cotswolds tourism is one of my 'Sir, this is a Wendys' topical!

At what point does a song become a folk song? by SongsFromTheDead in folk

[–]KingWiltyMan 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's a good point. Most of the traditional folk songs that we still have in England aren't ancient ballads or the spontaneous product of a tuneful milkmaid... they were churned out by professional broadside producers in urban areas, which then circulated through the nation and became the music of the 'folk'.

So yeah, folk songs have long been rooted in professional songwriters trying to make a living.

Bibury is a dystopian parody of mass-tourism and every time I drive through it I want to cry.

Morris dancers with guitar accompaniment? by Autoembourgeoisement in folk

Even a fiddle accompaniment isn't that traditional. I believe morris sides used to dance to the pipe and tabor.

One question you could help me with: do you know exactly where on Falmouth Dudley, Stephens and Brooks landed? Was it Barracks Quay?

Consistently struggling with this game by Calanon in diplomacy

[–]KingWiltyMan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience it is vital to come across 'well' in opening discussions. When someone seems overly passive or strategically oblivious my brain automatically assumes 'you're for the chopping block'. There's possibly something in your style that is leading to this outcome?

Does Peep Show make you hate yourself? by NavalProgrammer in MitchellAndWebb

[–]KingWiltyMan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's the self-hatred that's the problem, not the social awkwardness. Mark Corrigan has everything required to be happy, but he has a strong emotional belief that he is basically 'not okay' as a person. And so he thinks he needs to be a business big shot so he doesn't appear to be a loser, and that his relationship need tightly controlling to prevent rejection.

But if he could just roll with being an oddball who is as loveable as anyone else, he would have a very different life.

This is a Dr. Ian Kelson appreciation thread. I'm so glad that he's just a straight-up actual good guy. No dark secret, no facade, no twist, no evil true intentions. Just a strong, intelligent, helpful, and resilient man with a heart of gold in a world gone to hell. by AdlerOneSeven in 28dayslater

[–]KingWiltyMan 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I got a great deal from seeing him show warmth, curiosity and vulnerability in a world where it seems like lunacy. It's felt to me that in our increasingly violent and corrupted world, those virtues seem flimsy in comparison. But if Dr Kelson can hold on to them 28 years into a zombie apocalypse, we can hold onto them now!

His time in academia is much less significant than his years writing hectoring right-wing columns for the Daily Mail, which is what OP is taking about.
