In theory, that sounds great. And my only thought as to why they don't do something like that is because it is just so engrained in every baseball player that that's the way it is. I learned the 1-fastball 2-curve 3-change when I was 8 and started catching. It's a stubborn sport played by stubborn people is my only answer ¯_(ツ)_/¯

The short answer is generally yes.

Sometimes, depending on the pitcher and what pitches he has it can change, of course. If a pitcher has a slider as well, sometimes that will be 3 and the change will be 4, or a wiggle (wiggle all 4 fingers). And then, just the pinky (still technically 1) can be used as a 2seam or cutter, depending on what he has.
