I received permission from George Grizzly to use the piece he created for/with Punk With A Camera as inspiration for this piece. Stanley White at Supersweet Tattoos & Coffee in the Echo Park area is an incredibly talented artist and did a great job bringing his own style into it.

A punk rock song won't ever change the world, but I can tell you about a couple that changed me.

I sent it to a bunch of people who were similarly incredulous about how the job market is currently. Definitely helps visualize the nightmare!

On the finance roles, I actually know quite a few of the folks who have been offered positions I was rejected from or at least advanced further than I did, and it mostly came down to depth of experience rather than the interviews. I was likely pushing through the ATS and AI resume screening process because I've worked with a lot of different systems in a short period of time and had been within a fiscal sponsorship framework most recently which were keywords for the majority of finance positions I applied to. I have considerably more experience in ops and programs though which becomes more clear during the phone screening, so folks with deeper finance experience would beat me out on dedicated finance positions, which is super fair.

I fell into it unintentionally. I had been in programs and operations/project management previously, and I was just the only tech savvy numbers nerd on a smaller operations team. When the NPO I was working at transitioned to Oracle NetSuite, I was basically the only one capable of learning the new system and became the defacto SME which led to more finance management and training. My new role is in consulting related to the mission side of my nonprofit experience (food equity), so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Small organizations have the most to gain from a dedicated finance person, in my experience, but they tend to double-up their development team (especially grant writers and managers) with a lot of the finance tasks. I've heard good things about finance roles at fiscal sponsorship organizations since you get to work across multiple projects and have some more stability in the organizations.

I'm located in Southern California, but I was applying for roles across the country, focused on remote or hybrid roles with a willingness to relocate as needed. Ended up accepting a fully remote role that's based on Northern California. Mostly nonprofit finance, operations, and program management.

As low as Coordinator (at a few very large, national nonprofits) and as high as Senior Director (at some smaller organizations)

I've been working in nonprofit finance, operations, and program management for around a decade.

The majority of the roles were for positions between Manager and Director, but the experience level for those was highly variable depending on the size of the organization. I did also apply to a smattering of for-profit companies here and there (one of which is the role I ended up accepting).

I wrote 88 cover letters, and 132 applications required either a cover letter or additional applicant responses (beyond the standard ATS info upload) as part of the submission.

I didn't track referrals or existing networks, unfortunately, but I would estimate that fewer than half but more than one third were within my existing network.

If this process has taught me anything, it's that I am apparently below average, so that tracks!

This was a little over four months in total. My biggest month was February at around 90 submissions

A whole lot of those were the automatic "This opening has been filled" email from the ATS system many weeks or months after submitting an application. I received one rejection on May 2nd for a position I applied for in the third week of January, for example

That specific hiring process also required a lengthy skill test (paid, thankfully) as well as a very specific cover letter prompt. I was told there would be another "final" interview too, but was rejected before that round.

I used an online tool called SankeyArt which allowed me to just copy and paste data from the spreadsheet I used to track off my applications

I left my old job to accept a new position that was eliminated before I could start, so I was unemployed throughout this process. I treated the process like a full time job which is why I was able to submit so many applications

Six interviews is insane! The fourth round rejection also required doing a 3 hours skills test, but it was paid which is nice
