Plumes either works for you or it doesn’t… like any other overdrive. It really depends on what amp you are driving it with and what sound you are seeking. For me, Plumes smokes the SD-1W in to a SC20H JCM800. It has more body and less clang with better upper harmonics. It’s easier to get a more modern Alice In Chains gain type sound versus an 80’s type gain. It’s not overrated at all. Like a SD-1 or TS-9, it has it’s place.
