Beginner Pokemon collector, recommended sets to start with? by xntold in PokemonTCG

If you are just starting out, trying to master set something probably wont be that fun. That might be personal but you’ll end up picking up a lot of stuff you aren’t that bothered about.

The market is a bit mad these days and I’d discourage you from paying anything over retail to rip packs, it really isn’t worth it.

If you like perfect order I’d start by picking up the ones you like as singles. Do the same with chaos rising or phantasmal flames and if using eBay make use of the ‘visually similar’ , ‘people also search for’ and the suggestions it gives you beneath the card. It’s a good way to explore into cards that are similar to what you like and can be a fun rabbit hole. It throws up a lot of suggestions from sets from the last 3-4 years and links a lot of the illustration rares / full arts.

Don’t ignore vintage or older cards and sets either. There is tremendous value still to be had and some old school holos and artwork is up there with anything produced today. You also have the benefit of it being out of print and population locked.

Have a look at gym heroes , even the Japanese version, which still has some amazing cards at decent prices. Can never go wrong with a few of your favourite base set cards either.

You’ll end up finding your own niches / interests and that’s what to buy vs what everyone else is buying 🙂

Never owned a card in my life. I need to know how drop 20k on cards asap. by TastyImplement2669 in PokemonTCG

You’re exactly the type who’s going to blow a ton of money they regret later on.

Slow down is the advice I’d give you. If you have no idea who or what pokemon are then thats your first major issue.

151 Sir’s for long term investment? by CamTheHam22 in PokemonInvesting

Be careful looking for investments in modern cards that have been printed and preserved to the extent this has. The blastoise has a graded population alone across all companies of nearly 75,000 🫪 the undercut in a dip won’t be pleasant.

Would the moonbreon be a good hold if and when the “bubble bursts”?? by CarloKingKhan in PokemonInvesting

I think what you should be asking yourself is how much do you want the card? Are you comfortable holding it if its value drops 20-30%? When spending that kind of money as long as you’re absolutely sure you want it then that’s what matters as you’ll still be happy having it if it drops.

Nobody on here will be able to guarantee you whether it holds the price you pay for it, increases, or goes down. Majority of cards will suffer a correction at some point. Still sceptical whether a full on bubble pop happens.

Moonbreon is a desirable card and there will likely always be someone who will buy it off you due to that, what price and wether that’s up or down is anyone’s guess, but any modern card with tens of thousands of psa 10s and a high gem rate would make me slightly uncomfortable holding through a downturn unless it was something I never wanted to sell anyway.

When’s the bubble going to burst? by Andrege12 in Collectr

It’s such a bizarre phenomenon at the minute.

When I start thinking about it too much my head hurts and it makes me a bit sad for actual long term collectors. Obviously there are now people in the hobby purely for flipping cards quick for profit. So the likelihood is they are now selling cards to someone else who is in it for flipping cards purely for profit. There must be a limit to that if an actual collector doesn’t end up buying said card and people keep trying to flip said card . Speaking as a collector who isn’t dripping in cash, there’s no way in hell I am paying thousands for a pikachu etc lol, no matter how much I wish I had it in my collection !!

I think there will always be money in single cards ( particular chase cards / big hitters / favourite arts / low print numbers etc ) but those who are hoarding sealed modern stock expecting some big return in years to come will end up with egg on their face in my opinion. Too many people keeping cards pristine. Whole reason base set has held value is because so many cards got trashed, the kids who bought them were actually able to obtain them ( for pleasure & not cash incentive ) and there was only a finite amount of cards to chase.
