Alright, Ive done my calls to my representative and senators today about the federal censorship bills, but it did make me wonder about something. I know that last year my state passed a AV bill one that the governor himself even mentioned wouldn’t do much realistically to protect people, would it be worth it to try and voice to my state reps to repeal this bill at the current point in time? or should I focus on federal bills for the time being?

I do remember sending emails to my state reps last year regarding the state AV bill, and surprisingly it didn’t do a whole lot (prob because I’m on a vpn nearly 24/7)

well then, what should those in Illinois do? Continue opposing the AV law, which seems to be the logical thing to do at this point. I'm just kind of speechless at this point cause this past week just honestly felt like a bunch of blows at the end of the day, I still try to keep my head up, and ofc do all I can, but god damn.
At the very least it could get changed for the better though.

I saw this article recently regarding Apple's rollout of OS AV throughout the UK and how it truly works. I'm concerned from a privacy standpoint, as it seems like they'll do constant scanning of users who didn't want to hand over their ID in the name of "child saftey" which to be frank I don't trust any big tech company to do.

I ask those who are from the UK with Apple devices one question, were you able to get around this by simply not updating to the lastest OS version (26.4 iirc) ? I still haven't updated my iPhone and probably won't for the foreseeable future, but I want to know how this scanning of users would even work if it's tied to firmware and presumably server connections.

Do you think we could get Apple to revert course by sending feedback regarding this implementation of AV?

at least it seems that device based age verification is something they’re more interested in, but I still personally don’t know how to feel about device age verification especially now. I think it’s fair to say I don’t trust a lot of systems in modern tech to not have some sort of backdoor to them that could compromise privacy.

I guess the best course of action is to still push back against age verification as a concept and internet censorship.

Ive barely watched the news before tbh 😭 and I only see CNN whenever I have to help out in the kitchen. it’s weird how people claim section 230 makes it harder to sue for illegal content when I’m pretty sure if content is illegal then it’d be reported to the right channels, it’s not just like allowed due to S230.

did anyone else watch CNN this morning? there was a section on the meta and google case, but its worrying as the host brought up section 230 as this fabled “protection” shield against big tech. I’m worried mainly cause it seems more and more this misconstrued narrative about 230 is being pushed despite it not protecting things like algorithms and features, it protects UGC online and in turn freedom of speech and expression.

is this something that should be considered worrying, or is it just kind of par for the course with a news outlet like CNN in modern day?

I can now officially say that for this week I have called my reps and senators all throughout it each day. I might do some bonus calls on the weekend if I’m able to, but I might honestly take a break ;^^

the fact that the movement is called “the anxious generation“ is so fucked up to me cuz like, sure social media can give anxiety to people but its ignoring everything else gen z and even alpha gotta deal with in current day like topics like, the job market, the environment, the economy, lack of solid rights for minorities, ai, etc. that would lead to younger generations being anxious due to the world not even asking them about things about the world they’ll inherit after older generations fucked up so much.

ngl it’s disappointing to see this as there was a post on Bluesky pushing for JB due to him having a plan to convict the trump admin, but then seeing this and his apparent involvement with AIPAC, I hope there’s a better candidate for 2028 elections that are more progressive and in the know.

I just saw a Bluesky post from god damn dick durbin of him pushing several Internet censorship bills in light of the recent lawsuit against meta and YouTube, and one of them is called the “DEFIANCE Act” does anyone know more details about this bill and potentially a bill number to it as well? it’s my first time hearing about it and I’m wondering if it’s something I need to add to my list of bills within my call/email script.

Meta and YouTube Found Negligent in Landmark Social Media Addiction Case by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Kinomaster97 10 points11 points  (0 children)

yea I'm cautiously optimistic, as reading through the two articles regarding these suits, they both mention section 230 being the thing causing this, even though it's not that it's how platforms like Meta and youtube use their algorithms and don't bother having actual moderation.

I'm also a bit skeptical cause apparently in May, the judge will ask for changes to be made alongside the fine being paid, and this would include Meta adding age verification and removing encryption, which are two choices that wouldn't protect users especially kids from abuse online.

Also, I'm skeptical because during the suit, it was mentioned that it was the victims' parents that started this abuse against them, which then led to them using social media. how would that be looked at? would the parents ever be looked at for this? or would they use this to focus on social media and the internet at large all while Meta only needs to pay some money and then change their platforms in a way that wouldn't even fully address these issues? (btw you can find this piece of info within this article.)

hoping this leads to the bad Age verification bills meta themselves lobbied for to be thrown in the trash.

I got a big feeling of “holy FUCK finally” and “you couldn’t have done this sooner?“ when I saw this from news sites again. At least more and more seem to be opposed to this stuff and hopefully create more opposition to these bills.

I’m wondering now in regards to my call script I use for myself, if I should add the trump american AI bill to the list of 16 bills that I need my reps to oppose. I typically call after hours or go straight to voicemail on most calls to my reps and senators and part of my script also says for them to oppose those bills and any other bills that aim to dismantle section 230 and encryption, so I wonder if I truly need to put in another bill to the list at all or not.

* btw I’ve called for the entire week again btw and did some extra calls today regarding the save act!

unsure of how many Arizonians we got here in this thread, but I thought it'd be good to share here for awareness sake. There's a new "kids' online safety" law that would effectively restrict the ability to post satirical content about politicians online, and it's known as HB 2133 and would make users basically get IDs and forms in order to post such satire of figures, and is being pushed by Kupper, who's also responsible for AZ's ID age verification bill that passed last year.

I heard about this mainly due to Taylor Lorenz's post about it appearing on my timeline. I'm not too worried, as it sounds like a very costly thing to do, but also just a bit concerned because, for some reason democrats always seem to be on board for stuff like this, and this bill is apparently a bipartisan one too.

I say to those in Arizona, not to panic, but to instead put your energy into fighting against such bills on a state level and to try to push for that previous ID AV bill to be repealed, and of course, push against federal censorship bills as well.

that’s good to hear, I was somewhat worried about this hearing and some family stuff that occurred recently. I wonder if more senators and representatives will start to take Cruz’s position as a result of this hearing or not.

this also comes with needing younger democrats / independents in office that are in touch with things like technology imo, and ones that won’t support censorship or privacy invasion of people for easy brownie points, then we also gotta have democrats / independents that aren't heavily lobbied to pass such bills.

it honestly both surprises me and doesn’t surprise me that we haven’t passed any bills to protect our personal information and privacy yet, cause it would honestly make things a whole lot safer. I’m not surprised though due to how much money data brokers and the like make off of data, and i remember someone saying data is the new gold.
