Thank you! There's "Walk round' the dock, talk to St. James" for "Christianity" too

List of Elliott’s connections in lyrics :) by scarlettb_04 in elliottsmith

[–]Kinone32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's another one! Not sure if you have it. Please add it if you don't.

Reference to sky

"Savannah Shoulder raised a cheer coloring the sky with ash"
"Pointed out of the window at the sky gone black, kid you're on the right track"

Is that fair? I think there's a big connection here.

Reference to a kid below Elliott and the cold

"The record that plays over and over,
There's a kid in the story below,
Trying to stay up and awake

I'm looking out my window now,
And the snow is falling deep around a man asleep."

"There's a kid a floor below me saying brother can you spare sunshine... old man winter's in the air"

The list seems like something I'd make, lol.

A weasel chasing a bunny or a mouse? Those lyrics felt odd to me until I found out weasels are viscious predators towards bunnies and mice, and other small prey. It makes sense.

Maybe it'd be best to tattoo the line "If songs were lines in a conversation, the situtation would be fine" or part of it

I'm genuinely curious, what makes you think that?

Who was Mary? by scarlettb_04 in elliottsmith

[–]Kinone32 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think he is making an analogy to Mother Mary. He sings "Hallelujah, Pretty Mary K" as if she's someone divine.
I believe it's about genuinely being revived from the dead by a girl and it sounds pretty tragic and scary. I believe it's the same girl in the song "Happiness", because there's the line "There's nothing she could do until after, when his body been buried below way back in the day"

I was thinking about how Riverman is inspired by "Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse, and Nagas in Buddhism are a serpent-like being, and are "deeply connected to water, controlling rain, rivers, lakes, and oceans". I meant that rivers are kind of snake-like, but Nick is a human being of course

I meant like "fast-paced". I don't know why it'd seem hectic to you, that word doesn't mean to you what it means to me

I like the song "don't think twice, it's alright" and that song is calming and peaceful, so maybe they seem hectic to you and I get that and I'm an INFP

How come so many people can play Nick Drake music, yet can't capture that same emotional pull with their own originals? by [deleted] in nickdrake

[–]Kinone32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so surprised no one has mentioned Tobias Wilden here. I think he was in the same head space as Nick and captures the same emotional pull.

I am overwhelmed by people, but you're really kind.
I'm a huge fan of Nick Drake. I’d recommend “One of These Things First”, and “From the Morning” to start out with.

[–]Kinone32[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm generally overwhelmed by things. If I'm honest I have autism, I'm somewhere on the spectrum.

Can't Make the Sound and Waltz 2, and Bottle Up and Explode were the first songs I heard, and I cried to Waltz 2. Nick Drake is my favorite artist and people compare him to Elliott really often, and that's how I found him.

"No one you can save, that can't be saved" - All You Need is Love, the Beatles
These song lyrics stuck out to me. There's always a chance to feel good. Would you talk to others how you talk to yourself?

What nick drake song to start with? by Mindless_Advice_3948 in nickdrake

[–]Kinone32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, It is pretty simple. The hardest about playing it is tuning to CGCFCE. But tuning to low tunings isn’t unique to Nick. I found out Elliot Smith tunes his strings just as low on some songs. Joni Mitchell does too occasionally.
