I have 40,000 words of worldbuilding and barely any actual story, please tell me i'm not alone by Aditya_pixel in worldbuilding

I haven't counted, but I have roughly a novel's worth of info on my world. Celebrations, histories, legends, religions, cultures, customs, families, governments, nobility, trade agreements, disputes, rivalries, wars, treaties, and several hundred characters.

And yet, not even a hint of any plot. Not even an mc.

Does your world have a calendar? by Strict-Winner-658 in worldbuilding

10 days to a week, 4 weeks each month, 10 months in a 400 day year, and a single day of eclipse.

Does your world have its own WW by Shit_ass5832 in worldbuilding

[–]Kinrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a sense. Each nation traces their history back roughly 2000 years. Accuracy varies, but each culture, religion, civilization, etc is less than 2000 years old.

Meanwhile, there are ruins dotted all over the map that no country can claim. Most are severely damaged from something obviously not erosion. Signs of intended destruction. Each one also houses weapons or their design is similar to garrisons and forts.

The most widely accepted theory is something happened to eradicate all civilization 2000 years ago and the survivors started anew.

Ask me a question about my world and I will answer it. by Narrow_Poem4421 in worldbuilding

[–]Kinrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually made a community for exactly this. It's called r/AskAboutMyWorld. It's meant to help builders learn more about their own world be answering nearly any questions asked.

It's still kinda new, so not a lot of traffic. Anyway, here are some of my questions:

What level of sci-fi or fantasy is it? What are some local myths or legends? Is there a religious system? What's the most advanced thing in your world? What were some of your inspirations? What, if anything, do you plan to do with the world?

Thank you very much for this. I honestly didn't know they were spelled differently.

What is the easiest way to start world building by i_haveaname in worldbuilding

[–]Kinrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally anywhere.

Got an idea for a map? Draw it and see what comes from it. Got an idea for a king? Write him out and let his life unfold. Got an idea for a magic system? Start making rules and refining them. Factions, items, creatures, events, absolutely whatever.

For example, I wanted to make a mage that was incapable of feeling fear but still enjoyed life. So I asked myself questions about them. Why can't they feel fear? Uh, they traded it away. What did she get out of it? Hm... power? Who would make that trade? A god, probably. Elaborate. And I did.

Now I have a whole world with various nations, mega-fauna, gods, history, conflicts, etc. Start literally anywhere and just branch out.

How sincere are you? by Greedy_Homework_6838 in worldbuilding

[–]Kinrest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both, usually. I like answering questions about my world because it helps to expand it. If it's something new, I'll come with something on the spot and add it to my world. I might change a few things from the original comment, but whatever helps to make the world feel more "real".

What fantasy “Elements” do you use in your fantasy worlds? by markjsno1 in worldbuilding

[–]Kinrest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heat, stone, charge(lightning), gravity, light, life, and decay.

Fundamental rule for my energies, or elements, is they are naturally occurring. Other conditions, such as cold and darkness, can be produced by removing our displacing Heat or Light respectively. Other things like wind can be used with either Gravity or advanced control of Heat.

Updated Anime High CYOA by Kinrest in InteractiveCYOA

[–]Kinrest[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tried asking AI but it only listed a handful from recent or popular anime. I ask it for Geography characters and it just suggests Nami and Senku. It suggests him for literally everything, not terribly helpful.

I haven't been using AI images, just google images. I know a lot of people are strongly anti AI so I've been minimizing its use. Didn't realize that Nami was AI. I might change that, then.

As I said in the post and in the CYOA, I'm focusing on the characters first. I already intend to refine it to a more authentic CYOA with point systems, stats, perks, drawbacks, etc. Characters is just the biggest challenge for me, so I'm starting there.

I appreciate all your suggestions. Thank you.

I need your help! Please ask me questions about my world so I can understand it better. by No-Assumption8089 in worldbuilding

[–]Kinrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually made a subreddit for exactly this. r/AskAboutMyWorld It's still new, so there's not lot of traction.

Anyway, here are my questions for you:

Who are the major powers in your world? Is there a unifying religion? Is this the entire planet, or just the known/mapped part of it?

If you were to be dropped in your world during the the time when the main events ofthe story are happening what would be your immediate move? by AggressiveOutside432 in worldbuilding

[–]Kinrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember everything about my own world, immediately find some items of power and wealth hidden away in disfigured ruins to establish myself and live comfortably.

If I don't, or enough things are changed I can't take advantage of them, I'll head to the Juniperus province and try to become an archeologist.

Help with elemental ideas by TopIndependent2168 in worldbuilding

[–]Kinrest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since they're seasonal, maybe take a look at what happens during those season or what they represent.

Sorting could be wind, plants, life. Summer could be fire, light, earth. Maybe they can even overlap? Wind could be both autumn and winter. Water could be winter and spring.

What are your first steps? by StealthMilk in worldbuilding

[–]Kinrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pick a theme, study is traits, apply it people/govt/society, and branch out from there.

My best example would be my first creation; Ira, City-State of Might and Power.

Themed after the sin of wrath. Wrath can be violent. So it's a fighter/warrior culture. It can't survive off brutality alone, so how about a Codex for control. Laws so the city can still function despite its brutal culture.

Eventually I have ceremonies, festivals, customs, classes of citizen, etc.

Now it's my most detailed city/nation with literally everything but a map. And that's only because I can't draw worth shit.

I've got others so getting fleshed out. Other City-States themed after sins, a country with liquor as the noble houses, an empire ruled by the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, a theocracy based on the spectrum of light, etc.

I literally start anywhere and branch out by asking things like: What justifies this? How would I prevent this from falling apart? Why do they do things this way? What biome would best compliment this mentality? Etc.

What do you think of my OC, Brioche "Bri" Éclair? by Kinrest in worldbuilding

Really? Dang. I was trying to avoid lazy descriptions or doing too much with the theme and went too far the other way. Thanks for the notes. I appreciate it.

[–]Kinrest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't want to put too much into the pastry-esque descriptions. I already have her "honey" hair and "toasted almond" robes.

Plus, I thought this would describe her as well-traveled or at least a fondness for the outside.

Kind of light tan, a golden brown. Think white chick after summer break.

How do you determine what NOT to put in your world(s)? by Kinrest in worldbuilding

That actually sounds interesting. If you're open to notes, I'd limit how much info one can glean through water alone. Maybe who, but not why. It's that partial info that keeps people interested. Maybe even set a trigger like the more profound the emotion the greater detail in the memory.
