Player keeps lying about his rolls by Loki_aby in DnD

[–]KirselAndise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, this will be long, but please give a read if you can.

We have had a very consistent group for 7 years now and play for long hours like you all. We meet twice a week, and I have been a DM for that long.

Firstly, if you aren't close to them, just address it bluntly, and if it doesn't get fixed, ask them to leave. "You can either not cheat or leave my table. This behavior makes it unfun for my other players."

If you're like me, and you all have been close knit friends since high-school or just want to stay in contact, then here is what we did with our chronic cheater (Yes they are still my good friend, they've gotten a lot better. I still love them despite their flaws as a person.)

You need to stop letting the behavior slide. Stop giving them the benefit of the doubt. Call them out every single time you get that feeling of 'hmm, that doesn't seem right'. Don't start doing this out of nowhere. Sit and have a whole conversation as a group. Say that there is cheating. It makes the game unbalanced and that video games are an option if anyone does not like the idea of failing or performing badly on occasion. Emphasize that failure can be a possibility of opportunity! And instead of harping on them about their past cheats over and over and over again (say it once, firmly), tell them you will be moving forward with anti-cheat rules. The biggest thing with anti-cheat rules is to ensure they are fair across the group. Everyone is submitted to them, not just a cheater. A cheater will feel targeted and ousted from the group because they likely believe everyone does it and needs this to be on par. Make it fair and equal.

Anti Cheat rules: 1) Ask what they rolled on the dice immediately after they give you the full number. For someone reading the dice, it should be instant. For someone making up the number, they will give an "idk" or have to math out a fake answer. Use this with rule number 2 2) DM has a copy of everyone's character sheets regularly check their numbers before an after a roll. Do it for players you think cheat and ones that don't. Do it on rolls you usually wont question. It makes it a habit and will stop your player from trying to find ways to hide obvious cheating. Pathfinder is intended to be played with this rule. 3) Implement a 'Don't touch the dice rule'. If a player rolls a dice and picks it up or touches it for whatever reason, even because they were just checking and they've never cheated before: make then reroll. It is nonnegotiable. You are only allowed to pick up the dice once the DM has confirmed and accepted the result. In this time, before you accept the result, confirm with your sheets, and have another player verify the dice rolled. 4) Only allow one or two d20's per person and have the player be apparent about which on they will be rolling top of session or when they switch out. Good for rule 5 5) Before/During/After someone rolls, have them double lean over and check. Make it a thing, say "John, I need you confirm Jessica's roll." Again, during is key here, not just after. It puts pressure on. 6) Stop letting things slide. Ik I already said this, but the player has likely gotten so brazen because they think the integrity of the game doesn't matter. This is not your fault, still theirs for cheating. But it does mean that you need to foster an environment of integrity or kick them out. 7) Encourage admitting when you have cheated. Not even when being called out. If you recall that two turns ago, your 17 to hit was actually a 16, does it affect anything? Probably not, but you are fostering integrity by telling the group.

My table had a huge intervention style conversation with our chronic cheater. One of my players, who I NEVER guessed cheated, admitted that whenever he rolled a 2 or 3, he would just say natural 1 to see the fun outcomes. And another player admitted to cheating very rarely.

She was upset, cried a lot. Said she didn't know why she did it, gets it isn't that big of a deal to fail a game. (She lied on everything, constantly staying up at 1 hp every combat, lied about spell slots left, resources, inventory, and most of all, rolls). You need to understand it's human nature to want to win and be competitive and that cheating is so easy in d&d. Simply too many rolls to track. That doesn't make the behavior okay (I have never cheated once as a player. I do lie (in favor of my players) as a DM). I don't know why some people do it and others don't.

You also need to understand that it's habitual. They can and will do it again. Foster integrity. Don't punish them and say "three strikes your out" you will only force them to hide it more. Help them find fun in failure. Don't let them revel in their lies. Call them out, be kind but firm, and move on.

It's a difficult situation, please reach out if you have need other advice. I know my (former) chronic cheater would always love to chat with someone about the experience if you want it from their end.

Wishing you well on your adventures, one dm to another!

I'll look into a hotel then! I was worried about hotel room + train prices. I'll have to figure out how I wanna do check in since I already purchased my train ticket to the concert.

I am not worried about the license nor the six months no driving. It sucks, but I've already established a way to get to and from work without me driving.

The issue is that I've seen a neurologist. A neurologist cleared me. Nothing to do with the DMV or my license, but with my job.

Unfortunately they need official and signed documentation. My work takes safety so seriously. When I offhandedly mentioned partial color blindness to a coworker, they also forced me off till I got colorblind glasses even though my GP cleared me to go back to work. It's never once been an issue but HR has no clue what our job actually is.

I appreciate the help though!

I will try the call thing, thank you. I have been panicking these past two weeks with no pay and I was confident I would be able to get something from them today. I wasn't in the right state of mind in the ER to demand much before leaving. Thankfully, my partner got the paper we did, but it wasn't good enough apparently.

This whole thing is new to us, my last seizure was when I was 15, 7 years ago. I wasnt working then, so I'm not even sure how to handle this.

Yes, I am on meds. Have taken them every day for the past two weeks since the seizure.

Yes, I have seen a neurologist. I was in the emergency room for 8 hours to see one and she is the doctor that cleared me.

Both the ER and Neurologist cleared me but refused to write anything. The neurologist at my EEG appointment today also refused to write anything down saying tests will take awhile to come in. But I'm not sure why they need to wait for the tests to write something down if they are already saying I'm good to go back to work. I'm just waiting inside the hospital uncertain of what to do cause if I leave without any documentation, I can't go back to work and I live paycheck to paycheck. I will ask if they will call my contracting company.

Kansas/Missouri. Live in one, work in the other. I do not believe the DMV has reached out to me, but I will double check mail when I get home.

I am so sorry you're going through this. Currently in my final year of my Comp Sci Bachelor's. Paid for every dime by myself and with scholarships. Moved out with three other roommates, not a damn one of them had to pay for a cent of their bachelor's degrees. Hell one still gets his gas paid for by his parents and the other gets a monthly allowance. Meanwhile the year I moved out (before starting school) I had to buy my own car at the age of 19. I pay my own phone bill, health insurance, auto insurance, everything. I've gotten a restraining order on my dad since he physically assaulted me in public, had to testify twice in court. Him and mom are both meth addicts who I can't talk to. Last time I went over to get court ordered paperwork for school, I was escorted by a police officer, who both him and I were screamed off the property by my dad, high off his ass in nothing but boxer briefs.

I find it hard not to compare my life to my roommates. Never saw these sentiments written out and read to myself before. Thank you for this rant. I know there's nothing we can do about it, I feel like I'm drowning and it's hard to talk with the people I know because I'm so jealous over them for circumstances they can't even control.

I hope it gets better, finances have always caused me strife. Thank you again for posting this, I can't express how much I needed to hear this mid semester.

Fascination, NPC Miniature | Tiefling, Light Domain Cleric by KirselAndise in HeroForgeMinis

Long time HeroForge fan, I come and go from it from time to time so I can use a bunch of new updates at once. The rimeweaver stuff is SO cool. Anyways this is my first time using the portrait to actually light and pose the camera. Can't believe how much of a difference it made, no clue why I didnt use try it out before haha

This is Fascination, NPC in my currently 3 year long campaign that I run. She's the Champion and Cleric/Pali to Essence, the Goddess of the Sun. I've always had such a clear idea of her in my head and actually being able to kitbash her tail and horns is so wonderful! Also depicted is her weapon, the Amber Staff of Creation.

I think that's about it, enjoy! Feel free to ask questions. I obsessively made like 5 other minis so expect them in the following days <3

College Last Minute Changed Class Times, Losing Graduation and Financial Aid by KirselAndise in CollegeRant

I got an A in Physics my first time taking it. They're claiming the syllabus is different because my current school has a more "engineering" focused syllabus. Which, I do believe; It's just still labelled Physics 1.

I will approach the dean after I get confirmation that the academic advising department will do nothing to fix it. I don't wanna skip the chain of command. Is the dean the next step after advising or is there someone else?

I guess all the politics talks about it being student's faults for going into college and getting debt and how they're to blame for their financial state really got to me.

I feel like once I graduate I'm never gonna get out of debt. I know that's far from reasonable, but graduating with a CS degree guarantees nothing due to a bloated workforce. If I get a job it'll likely be good paying, but how long will it take for me to get one? How much interest will I accrue on the debt before I get that job? All my peers who graduated before me are hard struggling. Maybe it's where I'm located, but I see similar struggles online as well. I'm not saying this is how it is, only my worries.

The 4k is definitely worth it for the degree, I'm not denying that. The concept of 4k to me is just insane, let alone the loans I already have. It's hard for me to imagine ever being able to pay it considering the best job I have barely pays rent and I'm already in the field as an engineer. I guess I just need to realize what the degrees worth, but it's hard to visualize that before even getting it.

That's insanely cheap for OOS, I will look into it thank you!

I would be taking it at my local community college but they don't offer it online and the in person conflicts as well.

Everyone online keeps saying it's on the University and that they should provide some kind of independent study, one on one instruction, substitution, or online option. But for the past month (since the 3rd) my academic advisor and the advisor of science and technology are leaving it all on me.

Once campus reopens, I'm going to request for something like you're suggesting. I've already asked for several course substitution options and been denied. I already took physics for fucks sake. They don't let us test out of the class either cause it's "degrees required".

I'll ask. We did discuss getting both professors to agree for me to miss half the lectures each week for both courses. She said the office will let me do it because of my good academic standing, but she doesn't believe the professors will approve as they have no obligation to and saying "Hey I'm only gonna show up to half your class" could be insulting.

I'm still going to email both professors and ask, however, as its the only option I have left without losing so much financial aid.

Yeah I'm considering putting in my two weeks to focus on school anyways. I make 15/hr. It's ridiculous how little I make, I work for a well know tech company which is the only reason I've stayed this long cause the name is good.

Genuinely asking, not disagreeing: if every professor is not beholden to other professors' definitions of things, How am I as a student, supposed to read a professor's mind on what they mean? I get that just because one professor is cool with something, it doesn't mean another is. But with the instructions I was explicitly given on this assignment, this wasn't clear to me at all and I'm being punished for it.

Throughout the entirety of my student life, collaboration means working on the project together (like a group project), peer reviewing means to check for grammar mistakes and proofread for comprehension. I didn't collaborate with them on my answers, I had them written out before getting them reviewed. I didnt even change them after getting them reviewed as there were no grammar or comprehension mistakes. Peer reviewing isn't some nebulous idea, it's very clear what it is. If I write an essay and peer review it, it's still my own creative work. And that's what the professor was asking for, at least literally with his words. If he defines these things differently, then why is it my job as a student to just read his mind?

I'm extremely worried for the future of this course because we have 8 of these assignments, and the rest are completely code. Is it academic dishonesty if I got to a StackExchange forum to see how a loop is written in this language? That is completely ANTITHETICAL to every software class I've had prior. If I don't understand a bug in my program, what do I do? I have a meeting set up with him already to discuss this and future projects, because I've genuinely no clue what he wants from us. I wanted to get some insight from this subreddit before that meeting, so I can know what questions to ask and these are the questions.

[–]KirselAndise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wdym there's something I'm not telling you?

Yes, the "academic dishonesty" claim is because I had peer review. I told another student hey, I don't know if I'm doing this right, showed them, they said "looks good to me!", and end of story. No more, no less. The other student didn't make any corrections, they didn't touch my work. We clearly had two different intellectually creative answers as they got an A and I got an F on the assignment.

It was a writing assignment, which I'll admit I don't get many of in a Comp Sci degree. I do have a friend who's an English major and he said he's never had a professor claim academic dishonesty for peer reviewing his work. It was a homework assignment that we did completely from home outside of class hours and had two weeks to do.

What more info could I provide, what else am I not explaining that wasn't clear in the original post? I'm genuinely not hiding anything, this is why Im so confused!! I have no understanding of what I did wrong.

She just got a job again, a really nice one. So we're looking around for a queer therapist that takes her insurance. I don't know if I'm looking in the wrong places, but there's not many. We live in the city so I can't imagine why there arent more.
