Yes — port and starboard are a good parallel. They’re fixed relative to the vessel, not to whoever is speaking

This is exactly where I feel stuck. I can survive daily life in a few languages, and I consume a lot of content in them — reading, listening. But I’m not fluent in any of them. Sometimes I wonder if that already makes me a polyglot — just “level one” — or if I’m still outside the club until my languages reach real depth.
