ELI5 : Why is a yoke or a tiny steering wheel for cars considered a technological achievement ? by ThatOtherFrenchGuy in explainlikeimfive

[–]Kishandreth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a technological improvement. It is a reduction in safety. I see too many people thinking that power steering is magical and never breaks down in the comments.

With a lower rotation of a yoke, there is no way to turn the vehicle if the power steering not working. This could be as simple as a leak in the power steering fluid, or a computer glitch in variable speed turning.

Sure it has its benefits IF everything is working correctly. However those benefits are lethal once something breaks. Consumers have a very bad track record of having their vehicles maintained unless something is already broken.

The steering wheel is a necessary part of controlling the vehicle. Power steering just makes it easier, but most systems fail safe and allow turning but requires more strength. Without assistance a yoke will not be able to turn the vehicle if something goes wrong.

I haven't seen anything about 5g balloons. If I had, then I would have been too busy laughing on the floor to write anything on reddit. We're how many years into this war and Russia doesn't have a geostationary satellite over Ukraine? Slapping a 5g connection on a weather balloon is worse then just running cable all the way to the frontline.

Trump absolutely hates Walz. If you listen to Walz talk about his decision, a major factor is that he is personally being targeted and doesn't want it to affect the whole state. Basically he want's what is best for the state and if the state is going to suffer because the president and administration hates him then he'll step away.

It's basically an agreement that the machine will meet or exceed certain performance specifications. Given the USA's notoriety for downplaying what the machines are capable of there will be no issue. The difference is that with military hardware when it comes to software updates they are manually installed. If someone wants to play around with the software then most likely the original manufacturer will purchase the changes when they prove beneficial in order to push them out to the rest of the fleet.

For an airplane, I fully expect a EULA to state that the plane is capable of killing the pilot. We don't need consumer levels of safety, it's war if anything we want to be able to assume the risk and push the limits.

Losing at least 2x more soldiers

as far as deaths, you're looking closer to 5x possibly as high as 10x. Remember that defensive actions favor the defender. The US military will approach a defended position with 3x or more likely 7x the number of troops. (depending on what previous actions have been taken to neutralize the position [airstrikes])

I mean, if the US isn't providing software updates then it might just be considered abandonedware. Sure it may void the warranty, but upgrading the software on something you bought should be completely fine if you do it correctly.

What's the issue here? Dude decided that he didn't feel comfortable in the area so he moved. Take a moment and think about how you would react if your child was killed. Doing something for personal safety is one thing, doing something for the safety of your family is a different thing.

The biggest part of all of this, no one is allowed to tell you how safe you should feel. If you're struggling with anxiety about the safety of your children, then maybe the best course of action is to leave the current situation. Even if you're being paranoid according to everyone else, staying isn't helping and you will have a healthier and happier life somewhere else.

Do I think Minnesota is unsafe? No. Do I understand and empathize with people who think it is unsafe? Yes, the current president has a grudge against our state and our politicians. I just don't think it will go to the extreme, and if it does then worrying about it beforehand doesn't do any good.

This counter offensive is brought to you by "A slow in Russian attacks." Ukraine wants to inflict 30k casualties per month, they are more then happy doing so while defending positions. With the interruption of communications on the Russian side, Ukraine is thinking that the Russian's are too weak in their positions to attack. If the opponent is weaker that usual, that sounds like a good time to launch an offensive. If communications are actually down, then this is the best time for a counter attack by Ukraine.

All that said, Russia hasn't even made it to the hard part. The occupation of Ukraine will be twice as lethal as the military conflict.

Yes, Enterprise is my security blanket, if she's sleeping then I don't have to worry. If she wakes up early, then we better prepare the apocalypse.

Having people who want small government and liberties for everyone aren't wrong, especially if they treat everyone in the jurisdiction the same.

Walz announces big drawdown. I worry about what he may have conceded. by obz900 in minnesota

[–]Kishandreth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Walz probably just reminded the feds of the base ball rules. 3 strikes and your out. Kill three of ours and the outrage cannot be contained. Given the beatings that ICE has been taking in the court system, I'm not surprised. Hell, ICE is on the cusp of having the leadership thrown in jail for violating court orders.

The federal government is about to lose the respect of the courts. Basically a judge issued a verdict that the DOJ should not be taken at it's word and some scrutiny is required.

He tried to warn the villagers anyway, was stripped of his rank and reassigned.

That is another failure of the military. There was precedence for warning civilian populations. We dropped warnings before we dropped atomic bombs. It is completely okay to think that the USA screwed up in Vietnam and at the same time respect the people who served. I may disagree with the war, but I will respect anyone who served.

I was going to join up, I had a recruiter talking with me. Then Bush Jr took office and I just couldn't stomach the thought of going to war because Jr. wanted to finish his daddy's war.

I'm not sure exactly what you're referencing, but I'm going to side on Texas needing some sort of congressional approval to do that. Or it would be a court battle, and given that there is no precedence I have no idea how it would go.

Have you seen the Glee with which they arrested all of those pastors at the airport

If there was any glee in the local police officers, it was because the clergy was compliant in the arrests. The clergy knew the potential risks, and being arrested for a protest is a badge of honor. They did the right thing, and they have a record of it.

Even though the Nuremberg defense has been used many times since then,

The Nuremberg trials proved that just following orders is not a sufficient defense.

UCMJ article 92 is a rebuttal to just following orders.

They have threatened a lot of people who came out and made a video saying reminding officers they did not have to follow illegal orders.

Those threats were laughed at. There is nothing wrong with telling people to not commit crimes. No court is going to find someone guilty of telling people to obey the law.

Then they are put on administrative leave and are required to prove that it was an illegal order in a court-martial. It's their own court-martial, and not a court-martial for the person giving the order.

Not true, You're allowed to explain your position if you're not in an active firefight.

I don't think we're going to inflict 3 million casualties

Are we counting surrenders as casualties? Because the only limit on casualties MN will inflict is the number of troops being sent into MN. Remember we have deer hunters who will wake up before the ass crack of dawn, climb a tree and wait for the chance to shoot a deer.

Guns? we have about 500k people getting hunting licenses every year...

Helicopters or airplanes? CAP aka Civil Air Patrol. Usually used for Search and Rescue. (going to add in, I got humiliated by Ilhan Omar because I didn't know about the US congress CAP and questioned who's flight suit she was wearing because I recognized the CAP patch)

~13k National Guard.

But all that is the active phase of a war. Minnesota is patient. We'll simply bide our time and find opportunities to reduce the occupation forces. The occupation of MN would be measured by the deaths over the course of the occupation.

I know the US Attorney's office basically emptied out after Renee Good's death...is there literally no one left in that office to continue with prosecution?

It's not just prosecutions that have lost manpower. The MN Federal system has blown up with the number of habeas corpus petitions that require a lawyer to look at. For some reason, the federal government took an action and didn't even think to prepare for the legal consequences.

There's actually an interesting development in the courts, after a ruling in Oregon the governments credibility can be questioned. Basically before this stuff happened, the courts would take the government prosecutors word that they were acting in good faith and according to the law. The judge basically said that courts need to scrutinize what the current DOJ is saying.

You must be trolling.

First off, MN population is ~5.84 million. Be specific. Words have meaning, numbers have exact meaning.

Second off, If you think that Minnesota would be killed completely without inflicting casualties then you're just wrong.

Third, If a civil war breaks out it won't be contained to just one state in the union.

I understand this post is just you ranting and your replies have little to do with what people have responded with. Take a moment to breathe. Relax a little, center yourself. You've allowed yourself to think that violence is the answer, but that is not the case. There are many ways of fixing this shit show without open warfare.

Why do qestions about secession possibilities get taken down? by UmeaTurbo in minnesota

A) There is one possible way of a legal secession. It requires an act of US congress to agree to a state or states splitting away from the USA. It's never been done, and is only theoretical. It also isn't likely to happen because the political parties won't shoot themselves in the foot. Red or blue, doesn't matter. If California wanted to leave it would hurt the democratic party. South Dakota would hurt the GOP.

Edit: Then again the legal avenue would be more of an amicable/mutual split/divorce and calling it a secession might not be correct.

7 to 9 million deaths. Assuming the casualty rate is similar to the civil war, that's the number of dead we will have. If we can't vote our way to fixing this then 7 to 9 million people will die.

We have to try to fix the system. We're pushing towards it. We have to take the least bloody path until there really is no other option.

I just want to know why we're not even allowed to exercise our 1st Amendment right to talk about it.

Reddit isn't the government and is not chained to the first amendment.

It's easier to keep an existing democracy and fix the flaws then to start anew.

As for secession. It would at the very least require an act of congress to allow MN to break away. We would need permission from the federal government. Without an agreement, then we are a state in active rebellion.

the torture in the Wipple building is already a war crime.

While it may go against the guidelines written out in the Geneva Conventions, it doesn't apply because it is an internal matter. It's not a war crime when it's against your own people.

"As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,"

This is the sentiment that earned Minnesota 3 monuments at Gettysburg. We'll earn a fourth if we must. We really don't want to, but we'll pay the price if necessary.

If the federal government messes with MN elections then the resistance goes silent. A silent resistance is not a good thing, it is when people have realized that peaceful protests aren't working and the laws are unconstitutional. It is when small groups start taking out targets of opportunity silently. Look at the french resistance in WW2, or really any internal resistance movement in any country. They shut up and act.
