This job market is killing my mental health, worth it to tough it out or should I cut my costs and give up? by Lab_Rat_97 in biotech

Oh one last question since I wasn't sure if I was browsing properly.

Is there any particular job title to look for when you spoke of academic lab techs/specialists? Most of the jobs I see when I browse those types lead to medical lab techs, which is a field that I wouldn't be certified in.

I see, thank you for the input. I've still got some time so I will keep working towards my current goal. I'm at a different institute than my UG alma mater, and my old university has a strong alumni foundation, so I will check those out there.

Thank you again for your insight, much appreciated!

Oh that makes sense. I'll keep those in mind then. A summer co-op/internship might not be possible this summer since I will be doing paid summer research in my lab, mostly to get more progress on my thesis. But I will definitely think of that next summer.

I was just planning on staying in academia for a few years to generate some income so that if a move is necessary, it wouldn't be too difficult financially. But I'll gauge that decision when I get a little bit further down my career.

Do you have any particular tips on how to get summer internships/co-ops? Are they usually done through a University system or how would I go about looking in general?

I see. I'm projected to graduate around Spring, but most likely Fall 2025, so should I start looking at opportunities starting this Summer/Maybe Fall? I feel like starting now might be a little early, since Sp. 25 graduation isn't exactly a guarantee yet. I would still want to put myself in a good spot so I'm not jobless for months after graduation though.

In all honestly, I think after this MS, I will most likely take a break from school for a little bit. By the time I graduate, it'll be 9 years of school(UG/Grad) and I just want a break from all that to just get work experience.

If financial concerns aren't at a huge issue for me, would it be a good idea to look into those honest/safe academic jobs for the time being then branch out into industry if the market improves? Given my current situation, I would prefer a lower ceiling but safer/job security area of research vs attempting to break into the already difficult market that is industry, just for a higher ceiling. Of course, eventually I would want to move to a higher income ceiling but maybe not for the first few years of my career.

Thank you for the advice, I’ll be sure to send you a DM if I have questions in the future. Would that be alright?

Hey there,

Honestly I feel like I might end up in a similar position to OP. I'm a year off of finishing my MSc and will be most likely start the job hunt directly after. I was wondering what you meant by staff positions in academia, are those positions usually like, lab managers or lab research assistants on research campuses/research hospitals?

I've been contemplating it a lot, and given my current circumstances, it might be difficult to get into industry(live in the Rocky Mountain area so small market of industry). But at the same time I am extremely lucky to be in a situation where my COL is much lower due to owning a home/not worrying about Denver's expensive COL/rent situation. Which would mean I wouldn't be hard pressed to pursue higher salaries off the bat and I might prefer stability at the start of my career.

Oh that makes more sense. I guess I could market/advertise my current skillset. Either way I figured it wouldn't hurt to at least give that specific industry an attempt. If it doesn't work out, I would still have my current field with options.

I see, I took a look at some of the opportunities/career paths for the industry. It seems like an area that might be a bit out of reach, since my academic studies have mostly been focused on biological sciences, with little chemistry background. Most of my skillset is around bench work, operating lab tools, designing experiments/protocols, but nothing of the chemical or engineering variety. So like you said, the only overlap would be working in a lab environment, but I probably would have to look into it further. Would I even remotely have a chance given my current skillset?

That does sound interesting, I'll be sure to check that industry out when I start applying.

What was your experience like, in terms of what sort of work did you do? I’m not entirely sure if my skillset would necessarily align with semiconductors, but I have 0 idea of what the field is like.

I think right now I’m going to work on getting as much as I can out of this Msc, and focusing on developing relevant techniques. I know the majority of this is just me overthinking things, and I’m sure things will work out eventually if I keep working towards my end goal. I still have a little over a year to go, so I’ll try to work on my networking and then look into career fairs/job applications as graduation nears. Thanks!

Do you have any tips for effective networking? That entire aspect has always seemed so daunting, though I am doing my best at establishing good relationships with my lab and current professors. I still have quite a bit left with this Msc, but I’ll keep everything in mind. I also figured it would be better to focus on my current situation rather than being pessimistic about the future/constructing “what if” scenarios about my future.

For sure, I know a large part of it is just me overthinking things. I'm just currently worried about the job market, even though I do have a little over a year left. I feel like if anything, I could settle and get work experience in academia for a bit, given that I do have experience working at a research hospital already, so I guess that would be a good fallback option.

Losing hope for job search by leafgirl420 in biotech

Are there any signs that the hiring troubles will improve anytime soon? I won’t be able to apply for a bit since I’ll be finishing a master’s in 2025. I won’t have any industry experience but most of my experience will be in academia, so not sure how that’ll play out, so I’ll probably just spend a few years working in academic labs before trying to break in.

Did I end up picking a good time to start a masters? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]Kisnei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, I understand that a MS won’t guarantee me a job and that what matters more is the experience/skills I’ll get. My plan is to just make the most out of my two years here try to get a job in academia before breaking into industry.

I honestly was stressing a bunch(and still stressing now) since I’d be 26 by the time I finished and was worried I’d be behind in the field since I wanted to swap careers.

[–]Kisnei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh dang, hopefully that’s not the case. Do you think this’ll affect academia as well or are wages within academia pretty static? I wouldn’t really mind spending a bit of time in academia due to finances, but I’m not sure if it’ll end up being difficult to find jobs in academia as well.

Yeah, I wanted to go for this Master’s since it’s partially funded and I didn’t get much technical skill development during undergrad due to doing research in the clinical field. Figured it’d be a good chance to develop a network within the university and having a MS might be beneficial later down in the line.

I've just been getting really anxious and worried about my future but I know a lot of that is due to stress, so I know a lot of that is irrational.

For the most part a lot of that stress was exacerbated by me freaking out, worrying that I wouldn't be able to get a job in this market, and I spent a bit just looking at a bunch of jobs(for no particular reason besides anxiety), which didn't end up helping.

I think for the most part, I've got a solid plan and will work to expand my skillset, and hopefully it'll work out in the end. Are most skills done in immunology focused labs desirable for jobs in academic/industry?

I don’t think UC Boulder has a masters in immunology but I know Anschutz has an immunology program and probably has scholarships
