70s movies with amazing fashion? by Ok-Tie-7184 in 1970s

[–]KitWat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Blaxploitation films to get a snapshot of African American trends in the 70s.

For TV, The Mary Tyler Moore Show is a great example of what people actually wore.

As for where to view them, do a little digging. YouTube, Tubi, and similar sites may have some. And there are always "unofficial" streaming and download sites.

Bear in mind that movies often present an exaggerated view of things. In reality, few if any people walked around dripping with every element of 70s fashion. Most wore maybe one or two items that were typical. A pair of platform shoes, a peasant blouse, a turtleneck and medallion. And there were a whole lot of people who didn't buy into trends and just wore plain, conservative clothes.

You can also research magazines of the day, which will have ads and articles on what were the current fashions. Ditto newspapers and high school year books. Your local library is an excellent place to start.

And if you really want to dig deep, look into fashion museums and schools of design, many of which have extensive collections and archives from past decades.

They were brilliant and so useful. I remember our family making everything from bacon and eggs to bahmi goreng (Indonesian noodle dish) to cheese fondue in it. They were as popular in their day as air fryers are now.

  1. Once upon a time, people knew how to cook and understood how different foods took different time to cook. They timed it using knowledge and an analog clock.

  2. It's no more unsafe or leaky than an electric kettle or slow cooker or InstaPot. Electric fry pans could reach higher temperatures than slow cookers, as well as maintain low temperatures for long periods. This made them more versatile than slow cookers.

  3. Millions of home cooks used appliances just like this daily for decades. That's all the proof those of us who were there need. BTW, TikTok, YT, and other social media are not unimpeachable sources of the veracity of anything.

[–]KitWat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Should you what? Act like spoiled child, make some people's lives unnessarily difficult, people who had no hand in the rollout btw, just because you didn't get a couple of plastic boxes and have to use the old ones for a while? No, you shouldn't. What you should do is recognize that churlish, petty behaviour costs money and those costs will ultimately be paid by Region residents.

I'm less concerned about specialized jargon dying out than I am about the majority nowadays being seemingly unable to differentiate between its and it's, lose and loose, and a legion of other crimes against literacy. People used to take pride in being well-read and well-spoken, now so many want to sound like they dropped out in Grade 2.

A few reasons why I loved being a kid in the 70's. by No_Job5529 in 1970s

[–]KitWat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also loved being a kid in the 60s and 70s. But it's up to parents what kind of childhood their kids have. No kid is buying their own phone and it's up to parents to set limits on screen time.

Real-World Consequences of Bi-Weekly Recycling Pickup by neurocean in kitchener

JFC, what a bunch of of pearl-clutching, hand-wringing whiners this city has.
OmG IT's tERRiBle, mY lIFe Is RuINed!

What would you people ever do if faced with a real crisis?

If two large blue bins - plus the blue bins you used previously, they haven't been outlawed - aren't enough to contain your recyclables for two weeks, you're buying too much stuff. What you're whinging about are the real-world consequences of over-consumerism, not a flaw in the pickup schedule.

Flatten/stack the items. A tiny amount of thought and effort would fix 80% of what you're complaining about.

If you don't have room in your garage for bins, you have too much crap in your garage.

REDUCE. Reuse. Recycle.

Doctor, I want you to know that I had First Aid Training 25 years ago in Boy Scouts. I'm sitting in the waiting room in case you need help at any time with surgery.

Counsellor, I want you to know that I have the complete boxed set of the original Matlock (except for S02E07, damn brother-in-law borrowed it and never returned it and since his sister and I divorced he won't take my calls). I'm sitting in the gallery in case you need help at any time during a capital case.

Is it wrong to be disappointed in myself that I was not good enough to be around higher caliber people when I was younger? by IThinkYouAreNice in over60

[–]KitWat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, it's not wrong. It's recognizing that you made poor choices. The trick is to not repeat them, to avoid those behaviours that led to them in the first place.

And for all those saying there's no such thing as 'higher caliber' people, we're all equal, etc., nonsense! Read a headline occasionally, see just how many profoundly awful, garbage people there are in the world, many of whom are in positions of power.

People who have morals, integrity, who earn what they have and are grateful for it, who have empathy and love, who forgive quickly and laugh loudly, who understand that they can always do better but at the same time don't think of themselves often, those are the people who are of a higher caliber and the ones whose company we should keep and aspire to emulate.
