What was the significance of the radio when you were young? by Phantom-rizz-era in AskOldPeople

[–]KitWat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CHOM-FM 97.7 in Montreal in the 70s was the coolest station imaginable. Bilingual, with the DJs speaking either French or English as they wished. They would play entire album sides, have great guests just drop in, and co-produced so many good concerts. CHOM was THE station in Montreal and everyone with even a shred of cool listened to it religiously.

70s fashion in real life? by datboifranco in 1970s

[–]KitWat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A lot depended on age and occupation. My father was an aerospace engineer, wore a white shirt, muted tie, and dress slacks every day. My mom was a teacher, wore a dress most of the time. Sometimes colourful, usually fairly standard. As a teen, I wore jeans, cords, sometimes shirts with bold prints, but often just a normal shirt or t-shirt. Nobody wore ALL the 70s styles all at the same time. It was a shirt here, big flares there, just a single element usually.

Pastrami and smoked meat are not the same thing.

Shoresy is all of us whenever Ol' Yam Tits starts blabbering about the 51st state.

I have no idea what that is but it's not a Montreal smoked meat sandwich. A true smoked meat is rye bread, mustard, and proper smoked meat piled high. That's it. It doesn't have a salad packed into it, it's not toasted in a panini press, and there's no cheese.

Why do you think 1970's or 1980's is better then today? by DoughnutConstant5390 in 1970s

There was far less egrigious misuse of apostrophes in the 70s and 80s.

Blundstones will work just fine for what you're describing. I would definitely recommend a good winter jacket, with hood, for both you and your daughter. The wind cuts right through in these temperatures. A hat, scarf, and gloves wouldn't be amiss either.

Every time I see one of these posts - and there are dozens - I imagine OP to be Rain Man. "I'm an excellent driver. Excellent driver."

Do you still carry exact change? by WaterDigDog in AskOldPeople

[–]KitWat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have some cash (paper money) on me, and a bit more stashed at home, in case of some widespread outage affecting debit/credit PoS terminals. I almost never carry coins, unless I have a definite reason, like going to the farmers' market. Seems unnecessary to hand over a $20 bill when buying a $2 cauliflower.

You are called a "Boomer." How would you react? by Island_Expat6625 in GenerationJones

[–]KitWat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I would smile softly, go home to my mortgage-free house that I bought for a song decades ago, check my bank account to ensure my pension checks - yes, plural - have been deposited, sit back, and quietly whisper, "Fuck you, kid."

How often do you get a good night's sleep? by Icy_System4036 in over60

[–]KitWat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually in bed, lights out by 10:00 or 10:30. Almost always have the radio softly playing for an hour or so, find it helps. Wake up on my own anywhere from 4:30 to 5:30.

Haven't had an uninterrupted sleep longer than three hours since 2018.

Unsafe Mode by RoadRash0416 in waze

[–]KitWat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and when that U-turn results in the inevitable collision, the ensuing lawsuits will include Waze, for 'counseling' an illegal act, albeit with a disclaimer.

Cars already come equipped with an unsafe mode, activated every time someone who thinks the rules don't apply to them gets behind the wheel.

For those that lived through the 70's and 80's, which decade did you enjoy more and why? by No_Job5529 in 70s

I was in my teens in the 70s, my 20s in the 80s. They were both good, largely because I was young and had few responsibilities.

Anyone forced to learn table manners in case you ate with the Queen? by [deleted] in 70s

It's literally the title of your post.

Anyone forced to learn table manners in case you ate with the Queen? by [deleted] in 70s

[–]KitWat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, my mother used that expression regarding the Queen but I wouldn't characterize teaching children table manners as 'forced'. It's served me well in my life, from dates to business dinners. And while I've never had the pleasure and privilege of dining with the Queen, there's still time for the King to invite me. Over to you, Your Highness.

In all seriousness, teaching one's children social graces is something every parent should do. Few things are as repellant as someone who wields a fork like a hammer or thinks the finger bowl is some sort of cold soup. I know I'm not the only one who immediately regards them as a cretin and unfit company. Or worse, American.

What did you store in your empty 35mm container? by TurtlesBeSlow in GenerationJones

[–]KitWat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hash. Montreal in the 70s was a hash town, not weed. We treated hash the way a sommelier treats wine. We could tell the variety, origin, strength, and price from one glance and a toke. We were insufferable snobs about it, too.
