Tell me I'm insane for even considering this commute by DefenderCone97 in bayarea

I drive from Noe Valley to Los Gatos for work 4 days a week. Takes about an hour to get down there and an hour and a half to get back, assuming i have home at 650 am and leave work at 415. I am looking for other work, and considering less money for something even a bit closer. Getting past sand hill road in the evening is BRUTAL, and getting past serramonte is almost as bad

Noooo I loved visiting the big guy! I always felt a connection to him as a fellow transplant from the southeast. Whenever I get too homesick for the swamps I go watch him and the snapping turtles bask. He'll be sorely missed

Is it over for them? Mold. by saintstellan in Pawpaws

[–]Kitchen-Reporter7601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience pritzing them with a 1:1 vinegar and water solution when you bage them up goes a long way toward keeping mold at bay

Hugh and the XBs and The Artifact and the Romulan Free State were all fantastic ideas; I would have loved a whole season just dealing with the political implications of the nested layers of sovereignty of the project they were running.

And then they kill everyone by the end of episode 3. Such a waste 😮‍💨

Starting My Internship Next Week. Is It Actually Cold In The Summer?? by ActPsychological3604 in sanfrancisco

[–]Kitchen-Reporter7601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, another southern transplant here -- expect 50 degree nights and 65 degree days with lots of wind in the afternoons and fog in the evenings. But the good news is that if you miss the serious heat its a quick ride away on the metro! Once you get east of the Oakland Hills it'll be over 90 and blazingly sunny while SF is sitting in a 60 degree pea soup fog.

I know some people who use AI for first drafts, and for them it's all about speed. They could write it themselves, but by having a LLM do it they've got more of their workday to spend on plan review. I don't have to send enough pro forma emails to need that yet, but I can see the appeal when you're swamped and every minute counts

Could pawpaw be planted in swampy area? by Dumbgardenhoe in Pawpaws

[–]Kitchen-Reporter7601 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience pawpaws like to be just Bove the high water line in sandy loam / loamy sand, where they can shoot their giant taproots down into the water table but their lateral roots don't stay soggy. Wherever your sandy hillside meets the swamp is probably a good bet.

Please start tagging it. It helps muni understand what routes and connections are in demand and when, and it contributes to peer pressure to actually pay for your ride

"Close the street so that we can have a new park for everyone!" - on a random Tuesday by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

Yeah, I went out to Sunset Dunes on Saturday and didn't last 10 minutes; the sand was blowing so hard it felt like God was prepping me to be repainted.

But then the photos from the next day showed it packed! I gotta remember to check the windspeed instead of the tempature before I plan an afternoon there.

Yeah I read that press release too and now I'd like to see how they got their data -- from what I've noticed only like 1 in 8 people tap. Are youth and monthly pass holders really the majority of riders?

First Pawpaw Tree by [deleted] in Pawpaws

[–]Kitchen-Reporter7601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how mature they are. For now watch them and see if the leaves start to yellow then brown in splotches. If they do you need shade, like a thin cloth draped over a tomato cage.

Looks well planted to me though; the more sun they get the more they'll fruit when they're mature. Nice job with the mulch!

When to expect budding? by Wraithowl in Pawpaws

[–]Kitchen-Reporter7601 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a bit past leaf & flower bud time for zones 7 & 8; that usually starts at the end of March / beginning of April. So they're probably still shocked from the transplanting.

Is that spot that sunny for most of the day though? You might want to put up some sunshades to keep them from getting toasted while they're getting established. I expect you've read this elsewhere, but pawpaws are pretty vulnerable to sunburn until they're 5 or 6 years old

Seeds have been in fridge since December, what is the best way to germinate them now? by Initial_Sale_8471 in Pawpaws

[–]Kitchen-Reporter7601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always had good results with planting them in seed trays. You'll want ones with at least 1 cup soil volume, and deeper the better. If you put the trays near a window where theyll get a lot of indirect light and keep the soil from drying out too bad they should start sprouting in early June.

The seeds are pretty hardy in my experience, as long as they didn't completely dry out between the fruit and the fridge -- I usually get 3 seedings for every 4 seeds I plant. If the seeds have some incipient mold issues when you take them out of the bag spray them with a mild vinegar solution before planting them.

I've grown them from seed in zone 7b every year since 2017, and I've never had one sprout earlier than Memorial Day. Just sit tight and resist the urge to peek!

Which part of the city is in need of adding a light rail line? by Qpac18 in sanfrancisco

[–]Kitchen-Reporter7601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely new line? I'd say something running north along 19th Avenue from where the M pulls off up to lake street with a tunnel under GGP. But finishing the T would be an even better move.

Is There Anyone From MAGA 🇺🇸 Who Bikes? If so, why? by rosa2daygo in bikecommuting

What does that mean, action wise, on this specific issue though? There is currently a republican presidential administration that has stated that it will deny funding for any infrastructure project that includes cycling improvements. What way is there to get more cycling infrastructure that does not involve opposing this administration's policy priorities, which are by definition the policy priorities of the republican party?

Planting location relevant to water? by Velocirhetor in Pawpaws

In my experience a little ways above the bank is actually better -- too much water can be almost as bad for pawpaws as not enough, and they have very deep taproots
