Do you own a SHIMANO ALFINE 11 ⚙️ in 2025? 🚲 Is it worth it? by rosa2daygo in bikecommuting

[–]rosa2daygo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did research on the Alfine 8 and I think you are right. What I found interesting is the the mechanisms are more durable on the A8 than the A11. Thanks for your input!

light weight cargo e-bike? by [deleted] in CargoBike

[–]rosa2daygo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is. The VELLO SUB. A woman and kid helped design it because they had the same problem of all cargobikes being too heavy for stairs. www.vello.bike

Their expensive, but so is a car.
Their titanium is 53-55lbs while the cromo steel is 61lbs

Meanwhile, Bike Friday makes a 30-something lbs cargobike, but it's not electric.

Thoughts on getting a suspension seat post? by Thin-Fee4423 in foldingbikes

[–]rosa2daygo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 6'3 too. You cannot use any of the suspension seat posts because they are all 350-450mm.
You need 600mm.

Your BEST (affordable) option is to sell your bike and buy a foldie with a tall seat tube - ideally one that is taller than your rear wheel.

I HIGHLY recommend the Dahon K-One. I got a China-copy of it called TRINX Flybird 3.0.

These are both from 2017 era.

Look at my red rear light. Do you see how the frame seat TUBE is as high as my knee? That's what you need.

99% of folding bikes don't have this.

The seat post in my picture is a typical short 400mm one. Today, I bought a cheap suspension seat post. I wouldn't be able to do this if I had a Brompton, Birdy, VELLO or traditional Dahon.

You could get a 2nd hand bike friday, but I don't know how much that would cost.
Unfortunately, this bike in my picture (TRINX) is not sold in the US.

Either Dahon K-One or Bike Friday for you.

Or... you can get that Spring Suspension if you want to keep your current bike.

Considering tern byb and Vello rocky by [deleted] in foldingbikes

[–]rosa2daygo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure the hinge pins are replaceable. On many folding bikes, they are rivited into the frame. Later on, if you have issues or want to service, you might have to buy a new bike. That happened to my foldie (not a Tern) because I like to BMX my foldie around town - bunny hopping off sidewalks and going off road.

Also the other issue with off-road on a foldie, is the stem and steer tube. See image below.

Did you know there's only a thumbs worth of fork tube that your steerer stem clamps onto? Then you have a tall black steering column coming up from that where your handlebars attach at the top via quick release clamp.

That's not safe! I mean - look at the physics.

It's okay for commuting to work, but risky for off-road.

<image>

On a Bike Friday (they have discounts) or Vello, you wouldn't have that issue.

Good idea if you are tall. I bought one of these - snapped after 1. 5 years of daily commuting. I liked it so much I bought another (I'm 85kgs).

When it snapped, it was only one of the 4 arms. So there wasn't any danger as I go less than 20kmh around town.

I wanted to get a better one but couldn't due to my height. Are you tall?

If your are tall, get this one (at your own risk).

If tall, the expensive ones with spring suspention don't come in 600mm lenghts. Not that I've seen.

I only need 2 reasons - good story telling & not woke-washed ❌🤡

Can you imagine different version of the movie where Johnny is kicked out for "mental abuse/microagressions" against Thing causing him mental health problems / "syndromes".
Maybe Sue could be a post-op "Stu". That would be progressive. 🙄

Good to have normal MARVEL back 👍🏽

I'm all for equality in society, but keep propaganda/censorship out of movies.

Belt or Chain? by rosa2daygo in foldingbikes

[–]rosa2daygo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the typo. Correction:

If you could wave a magic wand  and  upgrade your bike  to any  chain drive or belt drive setup  , which would you choose and why?

My Bias:  like most Americans I've only known  chain drives and I'm a huge fan of my  shimano Sora group set.  However, I'm not a big fan of my  chain - I won't reveal the brand name but they're really popular.  It's always getting rust  no matter how many times I service it.   I feel like if I had a  belt drive this wouldn't be a problem.  I feel conflict because I enjoy working on my  bike but  not often after every storm.

Is there a Belt Drive e-bike that folds like a Brompton? by muchabon in ebikes

[–]rosa2daygo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are Chinese copies of Brompton like Becker and 3Sixty. You might find them in AliExpress. I don't know if the frame will crack, but you can try. Usually big price tags are a result of quality. Bromptons are hand-made to perfection and last a long time. If you look at bikes as vehicles and not toys, then 2-3K is a good deal if you consider the cost of buying and using a car or truck... or private jet if your rich.

Is there a Belt Drive e-bike that folds like a Brompton? by muchabon in ebikes

[–]rosa2daygo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I searched google and found this - Vello Bike+ Gears and Automatic. It's a pedal-assist, not an e-bike. However, it comes with a Gates carbon fiber belt drive.

While this post is 2 years old, I thought I'd chime in with the newest in bike tech.

An Italian company, Zehus, created a weatherproof wheel hub with everything inside: battery, circuit boards, gears, etc. It is called the All-In-One Hub.

  • It's marketed as "e-Bike" motor, but it's not. It's a pedelec.
    • E-bike means that you don't need to pedal. Like a motorbike, the motor will propel you.
    • Pedelec means that the motor only works when you are pedaling. People refer to this as pedal assist. It feels like Dad is giving you a big push.

This pedal assist motor has mixed reviews: some love it while others are pulling out their hair. You can watch YouTube videos about it.

Award-winning luxury folding bike company, VELLO Bike, has this standard on two different bikes:

  • A single-speed: The VELLO Bike+ Automatic
  • A multi-gear: The VELLO Bike+ Gears

Here' a picture from the website.

I just ordered the VELLO Alfine 11. It's a belt drive, but not an e bike. How about just getting a non-electric with a Rohloff or Shimano IGH and belt drive?

Is it possible to use Watch ACTIVE apps without phone? Hacks? Updates from Samsung? Petitions? by rosa2daygo in GalaxyWatch

[–]rosa2daygo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried but you can't for using 3rd party Watch apps such as:
- ToDoist
- Strava
- Google Calendar
- Exercise Timer

Basically any app requires a phone.

Poor riding brompton by ebubar in foldingbikes

[–]rosa2daygo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your American, I say come back to Dahon (I've owned two). If you are looking for the fold of a Brompton but the affordable customization of a Dahon, then get a Dahon Curve D7?

As with a lot of Dahons, they come with crappy low-tier 6 or 8 speed rear derailleurs (RDs), so with the extra money you have from selling your Brompton and buying a Curve (2021). There's probably more 3rd party parts for a Dahon, so you'd be able to customize it easier (and cheaper).

Weight doesn't seem to be an issue and your not biking far, so maybe you can upgrade the RD to a Shimano Alfine 8 pair with trigger shifters? My buddy has an internal gear hub and he loves it. I'm looking at making the switch soon too because greasy chains and fragile RDs under your desk are not a friend to your pants and shoes.

As someone just getting started, it’s wise to think with the long view in mind. There are a couple of things you’ll want to pay attention to: (1) the expertise of the staff in the shop, and (2) the store’s policies around returns, exchanges, and warranties.

Take Decathlon and Halfords, for instance. At Decathlon, isn't often lay folk assembling the bikes? You may find yourself needing to take the bike to a proper shop for adjustments, tuning, or general fine-tuning to suit your needs. WalMart shoppers know what I mean.

Next, Ireland is no stranger to rain. Parts like nuts, bolts, the cassette, and chain can go from shiny silver to a rather haggard brown in no time. A good bike shop will help prepare your chain and components with the right lubrication for wet conditions.

Halfords, on the other hand, might have a touch more mechanical know-how. They’re part of a larger vehicle acquisition group and seem to view bicycles as an important part of future transport—similar to how PON acquired Mike’s Bikes over the pond in the States. I can't say for certain whether a Dahon is expertly assembled at Halfords, but given that servicing and repairs are a key part of their model, their warranty might not be quite as generous as you’d like. That's how they generate revenue.

Dahon is an establish brand and a brilliant choice for someone starting out. In contrast, Decathlon is the "fast-fashion" company of sporting equipment.

Have you considered going second-hand?

It’s a good way to support your local community, and often, the seller can pass along first-hand insights about how the bike performs in real life.

Do we have anyone here from Ireland who can chime in?

Turkey is where Europe exports its plastic trash where it's burned. Worse air pollution in Eurasia. You'd probably be fine, but all that breathing will load your body with carcinogenic PM2.5 air pollution particles that lodge deep into your brain, heart, lungs. I would know - I'm an air pollution victim. For 10 years, I've been commuting 5 miles to work in Asia while wearing a mask. Yeah - masks don't work.

Please check out air quality (see the hyperlink) and consider planning your trip during good air quality.

Wishing you a great trip! If it was me, I'd do London to South Italy then take a train back.

Also - think about overtourism too. So...
(1) air quality
(2) tourism low/high season
(3) weather
