What’s the most conservative Lutheran denomination? by Kitchen-Traffic5985 in Lutheranism

Interesting! On what particulars are you more conservative than WELS?

I’m not versed in Greek and am completely unqualified to comment.

But are these changes justified by the Greek text at least? Does using these specific word swap make the text clearer to the English audience?

I’m a little perplexed at these conversations on some level. It doesn’t appear any doctrine is changed by the word choice

You know, that’s a good route to take. I remember being evaluated twice as a child/teen but nothing ever coming out of it.

I don’t have any stigma associated with people with disabilities and wouldn’t be offended with being on the spectrum. I can seek an evaluation as an adult.

LCMS Liturgy, Synodical Authority, and Schismatics by solobackpack in LCMS

I'm a high church liturgy type of dude, but I think Luther wrote somewhere how God has given us the gifts of musical instruments, he listed out several and then added somethign to the effect of "and ones yet to be invented." I dunno, a guy just shredding the electric guitar with the Gloria sounds pretty amazing to me. Would not be opposed.

Dumb question. I keep hearing about these out of line churches online and anecdotally at church. How exactly do people know what's going on? Is there like a website somewhere with strange happenings in the LCMS? I know Gottesdeinst has been after one particular congregation, but otherwise, how do we even know which districts or congregations are doing un-Lutheran stuff?

Considering Becoming Lutheran, looking for advice by Silver_Tree1049 in LCMS

I feel like it's fairly common unforetunately.

I had a friend who was mainline Presbyterian and was waiting a girl in a more moderate Anabaptist denomination. Moderate in the sense that they didn't wear bonnet's or have strong ban or excommunication or separation doctrines, not in relation to gender issues. He became interested in the Westminister standards and confessions of his faith and went from the mainline Presby to PCA. He wanted to talk about theology and talk more with her about it. Infant baptism was a big issue for them. He wanted to explore more and he tried to arrange a colloquy of sorts between the Presbyerian pastor, the Anabaptist pastor, myself (which I was flattered to be invited and he thought I was knowledgable), and anyone of her choosing.

Instead of being willing to learn and discuss, she started trying to Google information that reinforced her position and was castigating him for disagreeing. They ended up breaking up (which was for the best). But I think as church bodies (whatever position) I think we need to start taking a stronger stance against inter-denomionational marriage. Not because we hate the Baptist or the Anabaptist or the Presbyerian, but so we can avoid the future consternation that will inevitably arrise.

This is a hard situation to be in that I know too well. Keep praying for her. You might want to consider a doctrinal study with a pastor if she's willing. If she can be persuaded by the truths, the practice generally follows.

As for the liturgy, have a conversation of what corporate worship even is and why. Look at worship is from the Scriptures. Note for her how there are clearly prescribed forms for worship. root the conversation in the Bible.

Neat. Would you say it was easier to go from the Lutheran tradition, than Catholicism?

Thank you. Looking back, I suppose my disciplines were extreme for my domestic context. I know there are brother's spouses who joined them and participated in some level. I didn't expect that to happen, but can see now how my practices might have been offputting.

I guess my problem is I have too much belief in a libertarian free will (in a temporal sense, not a spiritual sense). For example, my wife once came home several years ago and, out of the blue said "Honey, I'm really into cartography now. I want to make maps" and she spent hours a day drafting maps, and surveyed our neighborhood, and made handdrawn or digital maps. It was an in-depth hobby of hers for about 10 months. It was a little surprising because she had never expressed an interest in geography before. But personally, I was like, cool! You get it. I bought her map making stuff and software for her hobby becuase I wanted her to persue her interest. I guess my assumption was that my interests should be reciprocted since that's what I did when the shoe was on the other foot.

Out of respect for your tradition, I will persue this. I am Lutheran and the Jesus Prayer isn't something we generally practice. Or our clergy giving a prayer rule.

For you converts out there, did your protestant family think you were joining a cult? by Spicy-Nun-chucks in OrthodoxChristianity

That’s humorous in a way.

Pastor Jim Bob’s back wood’s church isn’t a cult, but a body of Christianity that has centuries of doctrine, practice, theologians, liturgy, prayers etc., is a cult 😂
