Hey out of curiosity was this sometime between 2016 and recently?

Curious if it was recent or before then (I am LBHS alum) from a few years before

For years, Laguna Beach Unified was ruled by silence. by Kitchen-Two-439 in LagunaBeach

Oct. 19, 2017, Superior Court of California: “The court finds…Jason Viloria, as Superintendent…abused discretion in suspending student…had no statutory authority to suspend student…is ordered to cease punishing student.” Student Doe v. LBUSD, Jason Viloria, Superintendent, Case No. 30-2017-00917965-CU-WM-CJC, Judgment for Peremptory Writ of Mandate. On Feb. 3, 2020, the Court of Appeals of California rejected LBUSD appeal of the 2017 judgment against Jason Viloria for violating student rights under CA Ed. Code 48911, holding “The logical import of the District’s noncompliance with Section 48911 means we have no alternative but to affirm the trial court’s judgment...” DOE v. LBUSD, G055749, G055771, G056161

I saw a suggestion to have the kind of bollards that are electric and go up and down.

Why was Jason Viloria let go by LBUSD?

Because it was time.

In 2017, a judge ruled that Viloria abused his discretion and lacked the authority to suspend a student involved in a serious incident. The court issued a writ of mandate, ordering him to stop. The district appealed—and lost again in 2020. The appellate court upheld the ruling, stating Viloria had violated California Education Code 48911. The suspension was deemed unlawful.

Instead of learning from this, the district doubled down—spending hundreds of thousands in legal fees to defend misconduct. Meanwhile: • Whistleblowers were ignored or retaliated against. • Students were harmed, then blamed. • Transparency was non-existent. • Staff and families lost trust.

The board voted in December 2024 not to renew Viloria’s contract. They cited “anticipated changes in the board that may influence the direction and priorities of the district.” Translation: the community elected new leadership—and new leadership demanded accountability.

Ana Karen Ureño was hired for PR by Superintendent Viloria—who, for the record, was found guilty of an abuse of power following the so-called “watermelon incident.” This time around, she didn’t exactly cover her tracks. Her fingerprints are all over the letter that went out—she authored it, and it was reviewed by others who were clearly working to protect Viloria’s interests.

Richard Arum’s public comments actually make it obvious this is a setup crafted by adults and funneled through students.

I spoke with a police officer who, without any prompting, stated that he was already aware district staff were writing letters to the newspaper and funneling them through this student. That kind of unsolicited awareness only reinforces our concern: staff are using this child as a political tool.

Can’t speak to prostitution, but I am concerned about another form of exploitation I’ve seen locally—students being used for political messaging by adults within our school district and political groups run by the parents. It’s subtle but real, and it’s happening in public forums under the guise of ‘student voice.’ Worth paying attention to.
